Download or read book Tobey (Tobie, Toby) Genealogy written by Rufus Babcock Tobey and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tobey (Tobie, Toby) Genealogy: Thomas, of Sandwich, and James, of Kittery, and Their Descendants The preparation of this Genealogy was begun by the senior editor for his own gratification many years ago. A large correspondence grew up with persons of the name far and near and an accumulation of facts of general interest. The services of Mr. Harry E. Gifford were called into requisition to aid in the work of copying from private and public records, to arrange the matter thus found and carry on the correspondence. Personal matters compelled him to ask to be relieved from the work in 1901; and the help of Mr. Pope was obtained to continue the undertaking. At the end of a year the editors found themselves at the point of publication, as they felt, and asked for subscriptions for the issue of the work. The response was not sufficient to encourage the effort, and the editors, both heavily burdened with other cares and labors, laid the matter aside. The conviction at length forced itself upon them that the book ought to come out, and its publication was resolved upon. While the work has been passing through the press much material has been obtained from careful search of public records and from correspondents. In but few cases have any of our applications for co-operation been refused or replies delayed beyond our necessary limits of time. But we wish to thank most heartily the large number who have been exceedingly prompt and liberal in their assistance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Todd Family in America, or the Descendants of Christopher Todd, 1637-1919: Being an Effort to Give an Account, as Fully as Possible of His Descendants Tod is the Scotch word for fox. In Scotland and the north of England a todhunter is a fox hunter. The name Todd is an altered form of the Scotch word tod. The shorter form of the name is therefore the original and correct one. The doubling of the final letter is a cor ruption. But at the present time everywhere unless in Scotland and perhaps even there too, the corrupt form is the more common one. Book Synopsis Genealogical Records and Sketches of the Descendants of William Thomas, of Hardwick, Mass by : A. R. Thomas
Download or read book Genealogical Records and Sketches of the Descendants of William Thomas, of Hardwick, Mass written by A. R. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogical Records and Sketches of the Descendants of William Thomas, of Hardwick, Mass: Illustrated by Views and Portraits To learn something of the origin and history of one's family would appear to be a natural and almost universal desire of mankind. The same curiosity which leads us to peer into the hidden future prompts us to travel back to the early days of our ancestors, to inquire from whence they came, where were their homes, and what were their names and deeds. And he who collects and preserves from oblivion the names and history of individuals and families performs a service worthy of general recognition. The value of biography and of the history of nations, governments, and institutions is universally acknowledged, and the carefully preserved records of families often possess an interest and value similar in kind, if not equal in degree. In our own country, the pressure of business interests absorbs so much of the time and energy of the people that until within a recent period these matters have received much less attention than in the Old World. There all records of births, marriages, and deaths have for ages been carefully preserved, and are always easy of access. The advantages of this custom are many and obvious; ancestry may be more easily traced, inheritance claims readily established, statistics of great value may be easily collected, and the interests of coming generations in many ways subserved. The origin of this volume is due to a circumstance which may be worthy of narration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
