Book excerpt: This Path I Took is an illuminating story of one man's recollection of his early years of how a young Cape Verdean boy struggled with discrimination, loneliness and poverty, how it manifested into his teenage years, his introduction into self-medicating and the graduation from internal unrest and anger into outward aggression toward others and his community. Author Gerald Ribeiro provides us with an oral history of his struggle with oppression in all its various forms and how it helped to create the self-fulfilling prophecy of yet another addicted, homeless, AIDS infected black man. Through his personal journey of redefinition, rebirth and recovery, Ribeiro understands the commonality, value and potential of all people. His actions to recover his life extend far beyond the individual into his community as a well-respected advocate for drug treatment, an AIDS activist and a leader for social change. This Path I Took is a story of transformation from a man's sense of hopelessness and separateness to a place of great love for humanity and a call to others and their infinite possibilities.

The stories Gabe “reads” to his sister always start out sounding familiar — a red-caped girl on her way to Grandma’s meets a wolf in the woods — but then, just in the nick of time, Sir Gabriel swoops in to save the day. His sister insists that’s not how it’s supposed to go. He says his version is better: “Nothing bad happens in my story.” But when his sister walks away, it’s time to reconsider. Are his stories boring? Why does it seem like there’s always something missing? True fact about stories: they need a bit of bad to be good!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Cacace wanted to leave a chronicle of his life to his sons and spoke to them about the idea. They told him to do it on two conditions: first, tell the truth and, second, tell it all-the good and the bad. This book was written as a record of the memorable moments of his first twenty-five years. During that period, his life seemed to be a great roller-coaster ride. His life until he was twenty years old seemed like the long upward climb toward the highest point in the ride. Suddenly, he came crashing down to the lowest point in his life. It took almost four years to achieve another high point again. Pride in his achievements made the writing go quickly. When he came to the skeletons in his closet, he had to force himself to open the door and let them out. He wrote things about himself that no one knew. As a result, he felt a sense of relief for having done so. He tells about his time in the US Marine Corps, where he was filled with a renewed sense of pride that helped him climb out of the abyss into which he had fallen. It taught him to value people not by their color or nationality but by their effort and desire. Vietnam gave him the desire to live again. There were incidents where he should have been killed but walked away without a scratch. There were incidents where he was at the edge of his sanity and someone stepped in to keep him from doing something that would have destroyed his life. Vietnam helped simplify the equation of the relationship of people to people in his eyes. They needed one another at a crucial time and didn't care whether they were White, Black, Hispanic, or Asian. It also taught him that in each of us, there is a battle raging between good and evil and, if we are not careful, the evil can win. Go back with him to the early 1950s and walk the path he walked.

Book excerpt: Join bestselling author Andy Stanley as he gives you the tools you need to find your path in life and avoid the detours, obstacles, and potholes along the way. Not where you want to be? Wondering how to get there? What if you knew the answer to those questions? What if there was one simple idea that explained why so many people stray from their destiny? Stanley believes there is, and it's called the principle of the path. And not only does it explain the disappointment and regret that characterize the lives of so many, it gives you the tools you need to be the exception. In The Principle of the Path, Stanley addresses the key questions that so many of us have asked ourselves: Why do our expectations about our future often go unmet? Why is it that smart people with admirable life goals often end up far from where they intended to be? Why do so many people start out with a clear picture of where they want to be relationally, financially, and professionally and yet years later find themselves far from their desired destination? Praise for The Principle of the Path: "As Billy Graham's son, and a preacher myself, I have seen firsthand the devastating consequences of choosing the wrong path in life. Andy Stanley writes about the importance of following the path that is set before us as stated in the Bible. May all who read these words be obedient in their daily walk with the Savior." --Franklin Graham President & CEO, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse "As a young man, I did a lot of stupid things. Those dumb decisions and bad behaviors led me straight into bankruptcy and heartache. But once I changed directions and started doing smart things with my life and money, I started winning. It's really that simple. If you don't want to learn this life-changing principle like I did—the hard way—then you need to read Andy Stanley’s The Principle of the Path. I just wish I had a copy of it twenty years ago!" --Dave Ramsey, host of The Dave Ramsey Show and best-selling author of Total Money Makeover

Book excerpt: The need to outgrow one's childhood influences and establish an individual identity is common to us all, but for Christopher Milne it was an especially difficult experience in view of the unique problems he faced as the son of A. A. Milne. In this warm, honest, and often amusing autobiography, he traces the path which, after several wrong turnings, ultimately led him and his wife, Lesley, to establish the successful Harbour Bookshop in Dartmouth - a path which led not to spectacular achievements, but to modest success and contentment. Wise, humble, and philosophical, The Path Through the Trees is Christopher Milne's search as a young man for his own place in life, told with the same sincerity and vividness that distinguished his first book, The Enchanted Places. Book excerpt: Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize (Biography) A New York Times bestseller, this “epic and elegant” biography (Wall Street Journal) profoundly recasts our understanding of the Vietnam War. Praised as a “superb scholarly achievement” (Foreign Policy), The Road Not Taken confirms Max Boot’s role as a “master chronicler” (Washington Times) of American military affairs. Through dozens of interviews and never-before-seen documents, Boot rescues Edward Lansdale (1908–1987) from historical ignominy to “restore a sense of proportion” to this “political Svengali, or ‘Lawrence of Asia’ ”(The New Yorker). Boot demonstrates how Lansdale, the man said to be the fictional model for Graham Greene’s The Quiet American, pioneered a “hearts and minds” diplomacy, first in the Philippines and then in Vietnam. Bringing a tragic complexity to Lansdale and a nuanced analysis to his visionary foreign policy, Boot suggests Vietnam could have been different had we only listened. With contemporary reverberations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, The Road Not Taken is a “judicious and absorbing” (New York Times Book Review) biography of lasting historical consequence.

Book excerpt: A young man struggles to reconcile God, faith, and sex as he stumbles toward finding himself in this "brave and irreverent" (Details) memoir. Since childhood, David Schickler has been torn between his intense desire to become a Catholic priest and his equally fervent desire for the company of women. Things don't get any clearer for Schickler at college, where he initiates serious conversations about becoming a Jesuit just as he enters a passionate relationship with a vivacious, agnostic young woman. Setting out on a journey to understand the balance between a life of faith and life in the real world, Schickler comes to terms with this dichotomy and learns that the answers he seeks aren't clear-cut--no matter how long he treads the dark path. Candid and funny, lyrical and blunt, The Dark Path is an evocative portrayal of one man's struggle with faith and women . . . both of which he tries to love with bold, bracing honesty.

Acclaimed engineer and historian Henry Petroski explores our core infrastructure from both historical and contemporary perspectives, explaining how essential their maintenance is to America's economic health. Petroski reveals the genesis of the many parts of America's highway system--our interstate numbering system, the centerline that divides roads, and such taken-for-granted objects as guardrails, stop signs, and traffic lights--all crucial to our national and local infrastructure. A compelling work of history, The Road Taken is also an urgent clarion call aimed at American citizens, politicians, and anyone with a vested interest in our economic well-being. Physical infrastructure in the United States is crumbling, and Petroski reveals the complex and challenging interplay between government and industry inherent in major infrastructure improvement. The road we take in the next decade toward rebuilding our aging infrastructure will in large part determine our future national prosperity.
