Book excerpt: The Small Catechism is an excellent foundation for discussions with new members or so-called pastor's classes for new members and inquirers. It not only contains basic documents like the Ten Commandments, the Apostles' Creed and the Lord's Prayer, but it also has Luther's basic explanation of these, along with explanations of Baptism, confession of sins and the Lord's Supper. The Small Catechism, therefore, serves as an introduction to basic Christianity. The Small Catechism is an ideal vehicle for reviewing our Christian faith. Small groups can make use of it, as can families and individuals wishing to go over again the basics of their faith and to learn how Jesus Christ, and what he did for us, stands at the centre of our faith.

This introductory text brings together key early Christian martyrdom stories in a single volume, offering new, easy-to-read translations and expert commentary. Book Synopsis Gregory of Nyssa Against Eunomius by : Saint Gregory of Nyssa
Download or read book Gregory of Nyssa Against Eunomius written by Saint Gregory of Nyssa and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems that the wish to benefit all, and to lavish indiscriminately upon the first comer one’s own gifts, was not a thing altogether commendable, or even free from reproach in the eyes of the many; seeing that the gratuitous waste of many prepared drugs on the incurably-diseased produces no result worth caring about, either in the way of gain to the recipient, or reputation to the would-be benefactor. Rather such an attempt becomes in many cases the occasion of a change for the worse. The hopelessly-diseased and now dying patient receives only a speedier end from the more active medicines; the fierce unreasonable temper is only made worse by the kindness of the lavished pearls, as the Gospel tells us. I think it best, therefore, in accordance with the Divine command, for any one to separate the valuable from the worthless when either have to be given away, and to avoid the pain which a generous giver must receive from one who treads upon his pearl,’ and insults him by his utter want of feeling for its beauty.

Book Synopsis God Is Not Great by : Christopher Hitchens
Download or read book God Is Not Great written by Christopher Hitchens and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Hitchens, described in the London Observer as “one of the most prolific, as well as brilliant, journalists of our time” takes on his biggest subject yet–the increasingly dangerous role of religion in the world. In the tradition of Bertrand Russell’s Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris’s recent bestseller, The End Of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope’s awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix.
