Book excerpt: Across thousands of years, people have described one of the most astonishing of all human phenomena: the near-death experience (NDE), the subjective experience of an Afterlife, a place where we apparently survive death. The more powerful the NDE, the more profound the after effects. The ambitious reset their priorities. Atheists change their values. Doctors rethink their beliefs. But what if the after effects of an NDE were undeniable? What if someone suddenly developed the ability to produce high quality paintings of their NDE, a new-found skill that went far beyond the artistic ability they had before? And what if that same person then suddenly acquired the ability to compose classical symphonies after their NDE? And their symphonies were then premiered at sell out orchestral concerts, even though, to this day, they are unable to read or write a single note of musical notation. Wouldn't this be proof that even a cynic would have a hard time explaining? After his NDE, this is exactly what happened to David. And this is his story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord, The Light of Your Love is Shining is a continuation of the author’s first book, My Journey Back to God. In this story, Emanuela recalls her personal testimony, including her struggles and how she changed her perspective to go on. As a believer, the author’s walk of life hasn’t been easy, but she relied on the study of the bible and in her belief that Jesus is real. After moving to another country, she found her call in scripture. When entering into Canada, she was met with a sponsor – a widowed man with 8 adult children – who later became her life partner. In this story, the author is confronted with a culture that is destroyed by English and French speaking people. Her love of the First Nation was woken up many years prior in her former home country of Switzerland, but here in Canada she felt the hate of this nation that has seemed to have lost their culture. Entering into the country as a stranger, she was forced to learn and speak English, which posed to be a struggle with her hard Swiss accent. This story in its entirety will show readers how important it is to be a believer in Jesus – He was the presence that guided her through these struggles, and became an important aspect of her new life in Canada. She was often comforted by the fact that everything happens in God’s plan, and knowing that He is the only one who makes it happen. However, this path in life is also covered in hate, such as racism ad xenophobia, amplifying the importance of putting God first and trusting Him through the many ups and downs we encounter in all walks of life. With all these difficult experience at hand, the author learned to look at life with a different outlook: “If God is for me, who can be against me?”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioethics was "born in the USA" and the values American bioethics embrace are based on American law, including liberty and justice. This book crosses the borders between bioethics and law, but moves beyond the domestic law/bioethics struggles for dominance by exploring attempts to articulate universal principles based on international human rights. The isolationism of bioethics in the US is not tenable in the wake of scientific triumphs like decoding the human genome, and civilizational tragedies like international terrorism. Annas argues that by crossing boundaries which have artificially separated bioethics and health law from the international human rights movement, American bioethics can be reborn as a global force for good, instead of serving mainly the purposes of U.S. academics. This thesis is explored in a variety of international contexts such as terrorism and genetic engineering, and in U.S. domestic disputes such as patient rights and market medicine. The citizens of the world have created two universal codes: science has sequenced the human genome and the United Nations has produced the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The challenge for American bioethics is to combine these two great codes in imaginative and constructive ways to make the world a better, and healthier, place to live.

A child is born with such incredible medical problems and challenges, a whole community is brought to bear to help keep her alive and her family from crumbling under the terrible strain. It speaks of strength, and the illusion of control. "One Brief Shining Moment" is a testament to one small family, trying its best to stay together, body and soul, and surviving the worst. It is a heart breaking, gut wrenching story to read, but one that demonstrates the depth of love. When one's alternatives are limited, you gotta go with what you got; and this is going with what you got, at its best. A must read for any parent who has ever faced a medical challenge with a child, as it gives insights only another parent can appreciate.

Book excerpt: This second edition is a major revision and update of Emergency Response and Emergency Management Law. As the first text to be published on emergency response and emergency management law this book provides an understanding of the legal challenges faced on a daily basis by the front-line troops in emergent situations. The emergency response law section begins with the duty to respond and proceeds through the wide range of legal issues that arise during response. Training accidents, vehicle issues, dispatch, emergency medical services issues, and “Good Samaritan” acts are covered. Additional topics include the standard operating procedures, mutual aid, the incident management system, hazardous materials incidents, OSHA, using volunteer resources, recovery by responders, the rescue doctrine, and the World Trade Center site litigation. The emergency management law section examines the powers of governors, state and local responsibilities, federal emergency management, difficulties in mitigating legal exposure, legal steps for mitigation, potential negligence liability, legal requirements and interpreting/translating assistance, preparedness cases, recovery cases, and the role of the local government attorney before, during, and in the aftermath of a disaster. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Stafford Act and the National Response Framework (NRF) are discussed in great detail. The third section discusses the ethical imperative, homeland security expenditures, policy and legal changes, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the war veterans. At the end of each chapter, questions and problems refer back to the text. These resources highlight the principal issues and serve as a valuable teaching tool for the instructor. This text provides a firm base of legal knowledge for emergency responders, emergency management professionals, and their attorneys.

The life of Tom Tipton begins as a child in segregated Washington, DC; travels through the powerful music world of jazz, gospel music, and the old hymns; reaches into politics and the struggles and hopes of desegregation; explores worldwide evangelism; and is still being lived out in 2013 in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. It would be a mistake to suppose that Tom Tiptons biography is just one more in the array of books that represent the cult of personal exposure. His is different in kind. His message is one of encouragement to the thousands of people who are now discouraged. His story belongs in one sense to the literature of witness, but in a far deeper sense, it belongs to the literature of hope. It is my hope that those who read these words will have their own lives enriched, in the same way that Tom Tipton has enriched so many lives through his ministry of music. He is an amazing man who has the gift of bringing out the best in others. Prepare for a spiritual experience.

Book excerpt: “When I was thirty-five, my wife and I were both reported dead by the first paramedics to arrive at the scene of a seventy-five-mile-an-hour hit-and-run. My wife Marcy died instantly that day. With brain damage from a massive stroke and my body broken, I wasn’t expected to survive either.” So begins Rise and Shine, the dramatic story of Simon Lewis and his remarkable recovery from a horrific car accident. Told through the eyes of someone who has “lived through it” and successfully overcome the hurdles of the health insurance maze, Rise and Shine is a first-person account of unexpected tragedy and life-affirming courage, with lessons both medical and spiritual. Rise and Shine shows how much patients can achieve, beyond the limited horizons of insurance-based diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, to attain maximum regeneration and rebuild their lives. An inspiring story about what it means to return to life after a near-death experience, Rise and Shine is, essentially, an exploration of the nature of consciousness itself, and an impassioned tale about survival and recovery.

It is inoculated into our very being at an early age and there it remains. As we grow old, it grows dormant… but it is still there. For the lucky ones, such as us, it emerges every year, like a reanimated corpse digging its way out of graveyard earth to shamble across our souls. And we rejoice… oh, if we are the fortunate ones, we most certainly rejoice. So turn these pages and celebrate our heritage. Blow the dust off the rubber mask in the attic and hang the glow-in-the-dark skeleton upon the door. Light the hollowed head of the butchered pumpkin and string the faux cobweb from every corner and eave. It’s Halloween once again. Shed your adult skin with serpentine glee and walk the blustery, October streets of long years past. And, most of all, watch out for misplaced steps in the darkness and the things that lurk, unseen, in the shadows in-between. Stories included in this collection: Mister Glow-Bones The Outhouse Billy’s Mask Pins & Needles Black Harvest Pelingrad’s Pit Mister Mack & the Monster Mobile The Halloween Train The Candy in the Ditch Gang Halloweens: Past & Present Monsters in a Box
