Book excerpt: Written in 1591 and published posthumously, Bruno's Lamps of the Thirty Statues presents an advanced example of the memory palace technique, He presents a periodic table or encyclopedia of classical philosophy, representing thirty abstract ideas through images taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses. These images are then given attributes which can be combined and manipulated to address fundamental arguments and isues of philosophical interest. At the same time, he develops a theogony and a categorization scheme for substances and concepts through the framework of the scale of nature and the scale of predicates or ideas. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giordano Bruno's third work on the Art of Memory or memory palace consists of a set of seals, which represent data structures for arranging and developing memory images and for processing mental representations and propositions. In this work, he fully combines for the first time both the retrospective Art of Memory and the prospective art of logic and judgment originally developed by Ramon Llull. Appended to this is the Seal of Seals, a discussion of psychological dynamics from a Neoplatonic viewpoint.

Book excerpt: First Published in 1999. This title is the third volume in the ten-volume set titled the Selected Works of Frances Yates. Greyscale illustrations and figures are included throughout - alongside the related descriptive work where applicable. The art in this volume seeks to memorise through a technique of impressing 'places' and 'images' on memory. It has usually been classed as 'mnemotechnics', which appears an unimportant branch of human activity. However, the author discusses in this title that the manipulation of images in memory must always, to some extent, involve the psyche.
Book Synopsis Ancient Egyptian Prisoner Statues by : Tara Prakash
Download or read book Ancient Egyptian Prisoner Statues written by Tara Prakash and published by Lockwood Press. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Old Kingdom, the ancient Egyptians constructed elaborately decorated mortuary monuments for their pharaohs. By the late Old Kingdom (ca. 2435-2153 BCE), these pyramid complexes began to contain a new and unique type of statue, the so-called prisoner statues. Despite being known to Egyptologists for decades, these statues of kneeling, bound foreign captives have been only partially documented, and questions surrounding their use, treatment, and exact meaning have remained unanswered. Ancient Egyptian Prisoner Statues-the first comprehensive analysis of the prisoner statues-addresses this gap, demonstrating that the Egyptians conceived of and used the prisoner statues differently over time as a response to contemporary social, cultural, and historical changes. In the process, the author contributes new data and interpretations on topics as diverse as the purpose and function of the pyramid complex, the ways in which the Egyptians understood and depicted ethnicity, and the agency of artists in ancient Egypt. Ultimately, this volume provides a fuller understanding of not only the prisoner statues but also the Egyptian late Old Kingdom as a whole.

Book Synopsis Report on the Aeginetan Sculptures by : Johann Martin Wagner
Download or read book Report on the Aeginetan Sculptures written by Johann Martin Wagner and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversial removal of the Parthenon sculptures from Greece to England in the first decade of the nineteenth century by Thomas Bruce, seventh Earl of Elgin, sparked an international competition for classical antiquities. This volume tells a lesser-known chapter of that story, concerning sculptures from the Temple of Aphaia on the Greek island of Aegina. Discovered in 1811 as the Parthenon project was nearing its completion, these ancient sculptures were acquired at auction by Johann Martin Wagner (1777–1858) on behalf of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria. The sculptures turned out to be significant in a number of ways, offering important evidence for a transitional period of Greek art between the archaic and classical eras, for the existence of an independent Aeginetan school that was the equal of Athenian art at the time, and for Greek sculptures having been elaborately painted and adorned. Originally published in 1817 and presented here for the first time in English, this book reproduces the report commissioned by the crown prince that was written by Wagner and edited by F. W. J. Schelling and contained richly detailed descriptions of the sculptures. In addition, Louis A. Ruprecht Jr. provides a comprehensive historical introduction featuring a constellation of intellectual figures, an afterword, notes, appendices, and more than forty images to tell the fascinating story of the sculptures and their legacy from excavation to the present day.

Book Synopsis The Art of Memory by : Frances A Yates
Download or read book The Art of Memory written by Frances A Yates and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-10-31 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique and brilliant book is a history of human knowledge. Before the invention of printing, a trained memory was of vital importance. Based on a technique of impressing 'places' and 'images' on the mind, the ancient Greeks created an elaborate memory system which in turn was inherited by the Romans and passed into the European tradition, to be revived, in occult form, during the Renaissance. Frances Yates sheds light on Dante’s Divine Comedy, the form of the Shakespearian theatre and the history of ancient architecture; The Art of Memory is an invaluable contribution to aesthetics and psychology, and to the history of philosophy, of science and of literature.

Download or read book The Water Statues written by Fleur Jaeggy and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family, obsession, and privilege boiled down by the icy-hot Swiss-Italian master stylist Fleur Jaeggy Even among Fleur Jaeggy’s singular and intricate works, The Water Statues is a shiningly peculiar book. Concerned with loneliness and wealth’s odd emotional poverty, this early novel is in part structured as a play: the dramatis personae include the various relatives, friends, and servants of a man named Beeklam, a wealthy recluse who keeps statues in his villa’s flooded basement, where memories shiver in uncertain light and the waters run off to the sea. Dedicated to Ingeborg Bachmann and fleshed out with Jaeggy’s austere yet voluptuous style, The Water Statues—with its band of deracinated, loosely related souls (milling about as often in the distant past as in the mansion’s garden full of intoxicated snails)—delivers like a slap an indelible picture of the swampiness of family life.
Book Synopsis Tearing Down the Lost Cause by : James Gill
Download or read book Tearing Down the Lost Cause written by James Gill and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Tearing Down the Lost Cause: The Removal of New Orleans's Confederate Statues James Gill and Howard Hunter examine New Orleans’s complicated relationship with the history of the Confederacy pre– and post–Civil War. The authors open and close their manuscript with the dramatic removal of the city’s Confederate statues. On the eve of the Civil War, New Orleans was far more cosmopolitan than Southern, with its sizable population of immigrants, Northern-born businessmen, and white and Black Creoles. Ambivalent about secession and war, the city bore divided loyalties between the Confederacy and the Union. However, by 1880 New Orleans rivaled Richmond as a bastion of the Lost Cause. After Appomattox, a significant number of Confederate veterans moved into the city giving elites the backing to form a Confederate civic culture. While it’s fair to say that the three Confederate monuments and the white supremacist Liberty Monument all came out of this dangerous nostalgia, the authors argue that each monument embodies its own story and mirrors the city and the times. The Lee monument expressed the bereavement of veterans and a desire to reconcile with the North, though strictly on their own terms. The Davis monument articulated the will of the Ladies Confederate Memorial Association to solidify the Lost Cause and Southern patriotism. The Beauregard Monument honored a local hero, but also symbolized the waning of French New Orleans and rising Americanization. The Liberty Monument, throughout its history, represented white supremacy and the cruel hypocrisy of celebrating a past that never existed. While the book is a narrative of the rise and fall of the four monuments, it is also about a city engaging history. Gill and Hunter contextualize these statues rather than polarize, interviewing people who are on both sides including citizens, academics, public intellectuals, and former mayor Mitch Landrieu. Using the statues as a lens, the authors construct a compelling narrative that provides a larger cultural history of the city.

Book Synopsis The Last Statues of Antiquity by : R. R. R. Smith
Download or read book The Last Statues of Antiquity written by R. R. R. Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning centuries and the vastness of the Roman Empire, The Last Statues of Antiquity is the first comprehensive survey of Roman honorific statues in the public realm in Late Antiquity. Drawn from a major research project and corresponding online database that collates all the available evidence for the 'statue habit' across the Empire from the late third century AD onwards, the volume examines where, how, and why statues were used, and why these important features of urban life began to decline in number before eventually disappearing around AD 600. Adopting a detailed comparative approach, the collection explores variation between different regions-including North Africa, Asia Minor, and the Near East-as well as individual cities, such as Aphrodisias, Athens, Constantinople, and Rome. A number of thematic chapters also consider the different kinds of honorand, from provincial governors and senators, to women and cultural heroes. Richly illustrated, the volume is the definitive resource for studying the phenomenon of late-antique statues. The collection also incorporates extensive references to the project's database, which is freely accessible online.
