This book was released on 2008 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review covers 185,000 doctors and dentists in the United Kingdom. The Review Body does not see any major cause for concern in recruitment and retention. The economic background suggests a period of difficulty and restraint. The Consumer Prices Index will exceed the 2 per cent inflation target, and the Retail Prices Index stood at 4.1 per cent in January. The Review Body outlines the conflicting submissions made to it by the professional bodies and the health departments and the NHS. Following careful appraisal of the assumptions behind the spending plans, the main recommendation is that all salaried members of the Body's remit group should receive the same basic increase of 2.2 per cent. Other recommendations are made on: whether independent contractor general medical practitioners (GMPs) should be within the remit; GMP registrars entering training placements; GMP trainers' grant; doctors engaged in sessional work for community health services; London weighting; seniority payments.

This book was released on 2007-10-30 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodegradable materials in landfill sites, such as food, vegetation and paper, generate methane and other emissions to the soil and water which can be harmful to health. The European Union introduced a Directive in 1999 which set maximum allowances for the tonnage of biodegradable municipal waste that each Member State could send to landfill from 2006 onwards. Waste collection and disposal is a key responsibility of the 388 local authorities in England, and the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has to work closely with them to enable the United Kingdom to comply with this Directive. Non-compliance could result in a fine of up to £180 million a year. The UK's historic reliance on landfill led to a four year extension to the timetable, but DEFRA took no effective action until 2003. Although 2005-06 saw a reduction of 2.3 million tonnes against the previous year, a further reduction of 4.9 million tonnes will be required to comply with the 2013 maximum allowance set by the EU. Much of the progress made has involved an increase in recycling, due to the public's enthusiasm, but manufacturers and retailers continue to use large amounts of packaging. Recycling alone will be insufficient to comply with the Directive, and new infrastructure - energy-from-waste plants which incinerate, anaerobically digest, or compost waste to generate electricity - will be necessary. But such plants are unpopular and typically take nine years to become operational, and there is a significant risk that many will not be ready in time.

Book Synopsis Meeting Needs? by : House of Commons
Download or read book Meeting Needs? written by House of Commons and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giving offenders opportunities to improve their basic and vocational skills can enhance their prospects of getting a job and is a major part of the Government's policy for reducing re-offending. In 2003, Ministers decided that the Learning and Skills Council (the LSC) should take over responsibility for a new Offenders' Learning and Skills Service which, after piloting, the LSC rolled out across England in July 2006. Delivering learning and skills to offenders is challenging, because the operational requirements of the Criminal Justice System takes priority, and because offenders often have other problems such as mental health difficulties and dependence on alcohol or drugs. Nevertheless, the new Service set out to overcome many of these longstanding problems. In practice it has not succeeded. The National Audit Office's examination of prisoners' learning records showed that there was not record of assessment for a quarter of prisoners. Learning plans are frequently deficient and not recording progress. Also, although enrolment is voluntary, more could be done to motivate offenders to take up opportunities. There is currently no core curriculum and inconsistencies make continuation difficult when prisoners transfer between prisons or into probation. The prison service and education providers are not working adequately together and there is insufficient research to allow informed changes. On the basis of the NAO report the Committee took evidence from the LSC, National Offender Management Service & the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills
