Book excerpt: “Filled with true-life tales and stunning hand-drawn portraits . . . a loving tribute to feline eccentricity and charm.” —Real Simple This “brilliant” illustrated book (New York Magazine) dives whiskers first into the unique personality, charisma, and character of fifty real all-black cats. From Alfie, who has no tolerance for wet humans or being ignored, to Sashi, who enjoys freeze-dried chicken by candlelight and full-on body rubs, each cat comes to life through a lovingly hand-drawn portrait and quick-witted profile. Delightfully quirky and utterly charming, this motley crew of black cats will win over anyone with a dry sense of humor. “So fun and sweet.” —Paul Feig, film director and author of Kick Me: Adventures in Adolescence “This book . . . is the pick of the litter.” —US Weekly

Book excerpt: Lucky 13?! by Franz Kratschmer This book begins with a short journey through the meaning of the number "13" in human societies, religions, and cultures. Then this is followed by some historic dates on which certain things happened on the thirteenth day. As the number "13" has played an important role in Franz Kratschmer's life, he decided to start his personal history with his grandfather, who sailed the world in the late nineteenth century. Some of the countries his grandfather visited would later be part of Franz's journeys. This included Brazil, Africa, Indonesia, and Australia. The reader will be taken on a voyage that started off during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, passing both World Wars, the liberation of the Austrian capital of Vienna on April 13, 1945, and the author's birth four years later. His career in the Austrian military was followed by becoming a civilian peacekeeper of the United Nations in the Middle East and East Timor (Timor-Leste) for more than twenty-three years. About the Author The author is married and has two sons. His wife, Vera Lucia Ataide, and youngest son, Karl, were born in Brazil. Franz and his firstborn son, Francisco, are Viennese (Austrians). The latter is also an Australian citizen. Mr. Kratschmer's main areas of interest are the Chinese economic expansion and the European Union. As a former peacekeeper of the United Nations, he believes that the traditional peacekeeping operations need to be reviewed and redesigned, with a view to enforcing humanitarian missions under the protection of UN forces.

Book excerpt: The Archangel Gabriel has quite enough on his plate with a murderous vampire on the loose, the enigmatic Lord Hallam’s return to parliament after a ten-year absence, and the near riots at London’s notorious Thirteen Club. But when Gabriel and his faithful sidekick, Jelly, investigate the murder of a woman found in a cemetery with a sooty stain spreading beneath her body, and a curious note impaled on a stake beside her, they find the most troubling omen of all. The woman has the mark of Selene—a long-dead vampire-hunting guild—tattooed on her wrist, marking her as both a witch and a werewolf. Selene’s grimoires were destroyed decades ago, along with the guild itself, so how did they come back from extinction, and why? When thirteen witches infiltrate a fantastical show at the Thirteen Club, their new purpose becomes clear. Selene is out for revenge. And tonight, there are thirteen werewolves straining at the leash of a full moon, their fury aimed at just one man. *** Told with Inka York’s usual humour and British charm, this book features Uriel and Bel being their best dramatic selves, Gabriel expressing his disdain at not being an only child through the medium of huffing, a bonded wraith that will give you the heebie-jeebies, absolutely zero horse appendages, and an overflowing decanter of gay angst. This is a standalone set in the Cascade Apocrypha storyworld, which becomes immeasurably richer the more you read, with returning immortals, top-notch banter, and twisted villains across three series so far.

Butler won renown as a Marine battlefield hero, campaigning in most of America's foreign military expeditions from 1898 to the late 1920s. He became the leading national advocate for paramilitary police reform. Upon his retirement, however, he renounced war and imperialism and devoted his energy and prestige to various dissident and leftist political causes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hollywood's leading aviators were heroic knights of the sky on the screen as well as in real life. These leading aviators performed aerial stunt sequences and acted, plus some wrote and directed motion pictures. Directing giant Cecil B. DeMille was so enthralled with aviation that he owned three airfields. Charlie Chaplin's family airfield also doubled as a motion-picture set. Thomas H. Ince, the famous producer who invented the studio system, owned Ince Airfield, which became the hub of Hollywood aviation. Eternal legends Rudolph Valentino, Oliver Hardy, Harry Houdini, and Mary Pickford performed in aerials. Many aviators gave their lives making motion pictures; three fatalities were incurred for Howard Hughes's great air epic, Hell's Angels. Hughes himself broke records within aircraft and film production. Aviators brought their screen work to life between films through barnstorming. The roaring in 1920s Hollywood was often aviators soaring beyond limits.

Book excerpt: Melvin Robinson wants a strong, smooth, He-Man voice that lets him say what he wants, when he wants—especially to his crush Millie Takazawa, and Gary Ratliff, who constantly puts him down. But the thought of starting high school is only making his stutter worse. And Melvin's growing awareness that racism is everywhere—not just in the South where a boy his age has been brutally killed by two white men, but also in his own hometown of Spokane—is making him realize that he can't mutely stand by. His new friend Lenny, a fast-talking, sax-playing Jewish boy, who lives above the town's infamous (and segregated) Harlem Club, encourages Melvin to take some risks—to invite Millie to Homecoming and even audition for a local TV variety show. When they play music together, Melvin almost feels like he's talking, no words required. But there are times when one needs to speak up. When his moment comes, can Melvin be as mighty on the outside as he actually is on the inside?
