Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Every believer needs to ask three big questions: What do I believe? What should I do? And who am I becoming? In Think, Act, Be Like Jesus, bestselling author and pastor Randy Frazee helps readers grasp the vision of the Christian life and get started on the journey of discipleship. After unfolding the revolutionary dream of Jesus and showing how our lives fit into the big picture of what God is doing in the world, Frazee walks readers through thirty short chapters exploring the ten core beliefs, ten core practices, and ten core virtues that help disciples to think, act, and be more like Jesus Christ. This compelling new book can be used in conjunction with the 30-week all-church Believe campaign or read separately as an individual study. Either way, readers will deepen their understanding of what it means to not just know the Story of God, but to live it.

Book excerpt: A new edition of the bestseller that has helped aspiring leaders worldwide advance their careers and step up to larger leadership roles. You aspire to lead with greater impact. The problem is you're busy executing on today's demands. You know you have to carve out time from your "day job" to build your leadership skills, but it’s easy to let immediate problems and old mindsets get in the way. Herminia Ibarra—one of the world's foremost experts on leadership—shows how individuals at all levels can step up to leadership by making small but crucial changes in their jobs, their networks, and themselves. In Act Like a Leader, Think Like a Leader, Ibarra offers advice to: Redefine your job in order to make more strategic contributions Diversify your network so that you connect to, and learn from, a wider range of stakeholders Become more playful with your self-concept, allowing your familiar—and possibly outdated—leadership style to evolve Ibarra turns the usual leadership advice—generate insight about yourself through reflection and analysis of your strengths and weaknesses—on its head by arguing that you must first act and experiment your way into trying new things. The valuable external perspective you gain from direct experiences and experimentation—which Ibarra calls outsight—provides new and critical information on what kind of work is important to you, how you should invest your time, why and which relationships matter, and, ultimately, who you want to become. Updated with new examples and self-assessments, this book gives you the tools to start acting like a leader and advancing your career to the next level.

The book has valuable wisdom and I believe in most of the guidance shared by her. In fact I practice them myself. I think this book is a useful read for everyone, not just those who think they are getting older. - MILKHA SINGH About the book “Age is just a number.” “Sixty is the new forty.” “You are as young as you think.” Everyone has heard these catch-phrases sometime or the other. People utter them to sound cool, and perhaps, younger. But when people say such things, do they know what they really mean? Grow Younger tells the story of one woman who lived and still lives a youthful life. However, this book is not only about her life. It is also about your life; why you should and how you can live a youthful life. Written with an infectious conviction, the book is peppered with practical, sensible and common-sensical advice on how to think, act, feel and be younger. It shows you that counting your blessings matters more than counting the number of candles on your birthday cake.

It’s the people, hands down, which is why it’s so important to have a healthy culture. So what is culture? In simple terms, culture is the way people think, act, and interact. Culture is all about the people. Culture is influenced and shaped by the messages verbally and nonverbally they receive from their leader(s). This book is the third in the Papa’s Legacy Leadership Parable series. Follow the journey of James (Jim) Thor, an up and coming CEO of a small but growing family-owned real estate and facilities management business and his interactions with his executive leadership coach Dr. Jonas Nolan. He has dreamed of the day when they would take a bigger stage and customer to be in the top tier of their industry, and that day had arrived! However, after the first few euphoric weeks of working with their new customer, the company began to experience a series of ongoing disappointments. Jim was feeling the enormous pressure of this mammoth change that in his mind was overwhelming. Someone had to be accountable for the mess, and Jim was the person at the top. He was now facing his deepest fear––failure. “ How can leadership be this hard?” Leadership is influence and no matter if you are a CEO, a stay at home dad or mom, a trades person, a laborer, student, a parent, etc., we all have influence and influence creates and impacts culture. Join Jim in his conversations and encounters with Dr. Jonas Nolan as he shares the principles of building a healthy and winning culture through the lessons he learned from his Papa: “ The Bamboo Story Principles”.

Book excerpt: Combining widely-accepted concepts of human behavior with elements from Rational Emotive Therapy, Positive Psychology, Emotional Intelligence, and most prominently Transactional Analysis, the second edition of Rethinking Everything explores in immediately understandable terms why we act as we do, how we frequently undermine our relationships, why we often cripple our potential, and how we can take greater control of our lives. By providing the language, real-life examples, cutting-edge research, and behavioral explanations to label, recognize, and examine dysfunctional conduct, Rethinking Everything empowers an awareness-inspired journey towards self-improvement. To that end, the expectation is not for readers of this book to save the world, but rather for those internalizing its insights to rethink everything in saving themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is entitled Women Struggling in a Mans World. In the beginning, when God created the heavens and earth, man was created first. Then he made woman for man. God gave man authority over all things. Woman was made from the rib of man to work by his side as a helpmate. Woman, all over the world has been, and is yet struggling to achieve in this world. A large percent of children is raised by a single parent, with no child support, absence of a father, no high school diploma, and receiving government help. This book is about how I struggled raising my children, working four jobs, receiving no child support. There was a time when I worked at a rehab center as a lab technician. Early in the morning, I carried blood to VA hospital and worked there for eight hours, left there to cook for a woman shelter; and on weekendsfrom 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.I worked at Presbyterian Hospital. On Sunday morning, I and my children were at Sunday school. I want to let women know that they can make it. The key is that you must put all of your trust in God because he will supply all your needs. This world was made by God. Women, you dont have to stoop to low level to get food on the table, gas in your car, or clothes for your children or even be promoted to another job. Be a woman of strength, having morals, values with dignity, and virtue. I want to encourage women to have some standards for themselves. If you dont stand for something, you will fall for anything.
