Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Things You Can't Say Out Loud is a collection of humorous essays touching upon a wide variety of interesting and timely topics, including what the hell is wrong with Florida. And also France. Ha ha. Those places are great, as too are talking heads lobbing guano at one another on cable news. As illustrated by a worried world frantically fretting over dramatic decline in civilized discourse--and accompanying end to governance and plumbing--as shown most recently by Wolf Blitzer sucker punching Tucker Carlson behind the buffet table at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. A brouhaha that ended with every Democratic presidential hopeful holding a handful of hair from the head of at least one Fox News anchor. Not to worry; however, given that crass divisiveness and coarse discourse bear a direct relationship to the unimportance of the subject under discussion, an important discovery to be known henceforth as the principle of reverse hyperbole. Laughs aplenty from these and other such wry observations are promised in this page-turning volume, albeit one that comes with a warning against consumption of contents while driving on the I-95, lest the driver spit Diet Coke through her nose from cackling outburst while trying to pass a tank truck. Safety first. Except in most of Florida. And France.

Casablanca was not a product of the 1970s, it was the 1970s. From 1974 to 1980, the landscape of American culture was a banquet of hedonism and self-indulgence, and no person or company in that era was more emblematic of the times than Casablanca Records and its magnetic founder, Neil Bogart. From his daring first signing of KISS, through the discovery and superstardom of Donna Summer, the Village People, and funk master George Clinton and his circus of freaks, Parliament Funkadelic, to the descent into the manic world of disco, this book charts Bogart's meteoric success and eventual collapse under the weight of uncontrolled ego and hype. It is a compelling tale of ambition, greed, excess, and some of the era's biggest music acts.

And after years of research into human behavior, observing people in their worst and best moments, being a mother of two small children, and failing more than a few times herself, Neeta knows what it takes to get back up no matter what bowled you over. Available in paperback for the first time, That Sucked, Now What? is a real-talk guide to personal growth that draws on and embraces the suck–and helps you break through to lasting, audacious resilience. You'll learn why it's so hard to get back up when stuff goes down, how four core components of your life shape your individual Bounce Factor, and how to navigate the five stages of the Fly Forward framework through Falling, Igniting, Rising, Magnifying, and on to Thriving. Along the way, Neeta shares successes and failures of her own, from the wonderful to the WTF, in an indispensable book to pull off the shelf whenever life serves up a setback, no matter the size. "If you’re someone who feels that life just isn't going your way, read this book. Dr. Neeta lays out actionable tools for overcoming obstacles and building your resiliency so you can get that extra push toward your dream." — Vishen Lakhiani, New York Times best-selling author of The Buddha & the Badass

For over 40 years, the rock band Kiss has galvanized the entertainment world with an unparalleled blitz of bravado, theatricality, and shameless merchandizing, garnering generations of loyally rabid fans. But if not for a few crucial months in late 1975 and early 1976, Kiss may have ended up nothing more than a footnote. Shout It Out Loud is a serious examination of the circumstance and serendipity that fused the creation of the band's seminal work, Destroyer – including the band's arduous ascent to the unexpected smash hit, Alive!, the ensuing lawsuits between its management and its label, the pursuit of the hot, young producer, a grueling musical “boot camp ” the wildly creative studio abandon, the origins behind an iconic cover, the era's most outlandish tour, and the unlikely string of hit singles. Extensive research from the period and insights into each song are enhanced by hundreds of archived materials and dozens of interviews surrounding the mid-'70s-era Kiss and its zeitgeist. New interviews with major principals in the making of an outrageously imaginative rock classic animate this engaging tale.

Book excerpt: This book is about stories of consumption beyond the culture - economy divide. By bringing along Actor Network Theory, entities that in conventional approaches are taken for granted, such as consumers, goods and companies proves to be unstable assemblages of humans, goods and technologies. We meet materialistic children and parents creating an intimate moment at McDonald's, car poolers trying to get out of the grip of individual transportation, young couples imagining a home in that odd reversal of private space, the furniture store and grown men practicing a hobby so close to childhood that it causes unease. These, and other examples, line that up as our monsters, ready to act out the drama. Considering that actor-network theory has its roots in narratology of Algirdas Greimas (1917-1992), what better use can one imagine for it than its application to the tales of consumption. In the best ANT-ian style, the book refuses to label people, things and phenomena with the received names. The message is: wait until the end of the story to see whether or not a big company wins over small consumers, or if behind a bewitching trademark hides a good fairy or a wicked witch. This collection challenges most of the common places about consumption, production, markets and consumers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book helps hypnotherapists to focus on the subject of regrets and associated emotions when working with clients. Promoting the concept of “the road of regrets”, this book presents a five-stage process for the hypnotherapist to work through with clients (adults and children aged 5+). The process involves identifying and acknowledging regrets; working through the regrets and associated emotions; taking any necessary action before releasing the regrets and emotions; and finally moving on to plan for the future. The book contains over 60 customisable scripts, guidance notes and appendices to promote ideas for practice. The scripts offer a variety of methodology to choose from: regression (including past lives); metaphors (Ericksonian); benefits approach; Gestalt therapy and solution-focused. The appendices include practical resources such as questionnaires, checklists, summaries, forms, and worksheets for exercises which the hypnotherapist can utilise in sessions (individual or group). This practical volume will be of use to student hypnotherapists, trainers and training schools, supervisors, newly qualified and experienced hypnotherapists. Although the main focus of the book is regrets and associated emotions, the book can be used for an abundance of other concerns e.g. lack of confidence or self-esteem; fears; anxiety and panic attacks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia brought an end to the Prague Spring and its promise of "socialism with a human face." Before the invasion, Czech reformers had made unexpected use of television to advance political and social change. In its aftermath, Communist Party leaders employed the medium to achieve "normalization," pitching television stars against political dissidents in a televised spectacle that defined the times. The Greengrocer and His TV offers a new cultural history of communism from the Prague Spring to the Velvet Revolution that reveals how state-endorsed ideologies were played out on television, particularly through soap opera-like serials. In focusing on the small screen, Paulina Bren looks to the "normal" of normalization, to the everyday experience of late communism. The figure central to this book is the greengrocer who, in a seminal essay by Václav Havel, symbolized the ordinary citizen who acquiesced to the communist regime out of fear. Bren challenges simplistic dichotomies of fearful acquiescence and courageous dissent to dramatically reconfigure what we know, or think we know, about everyday life under communism in the 1970s and 1980s. Deftly moving between the small screen, the street, and the Central Committee (and imaginatively drawing on a wide range of sources that include television shows, TV viewers' letters, newspapers, radio programs, the underground press, and the Communist Party archives), Bren shows how Havel's greengrocer actually experienced "normalization" and the ways in which popular television serials framed this experience. Now back by popular demand, socialist-era serials, such as The Woman Behind the Counter and The Thirty Adventures of Major Zeman, provide, Bren contends, a way of seeing—literally and figuratively—Czechoslovakia's normalization and Eastern Europe's real socialism.
