Book excerpt: Excerpt from Things Seen in Egypt Dictions, of bewildering surprises, of grim tragedy, and farcical humour which reminds one of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic Operas. But, looking at the outer aspect of the country, we may say that Egypt is pre - eminently a land of light. One does not realize at first how much the charm of Egyptian scenery depends on the transparent sunlight which we are now doing so much to destroy with the fogs and smoke of Western civilization. A tourist who for the first time thunders across the Delta in his corridor express on a winter day may find little beauty in the long monotonous lines of the mud-coloured plain with patches of dull green crops. But the sun shines out, and straightway the whole scene is transformed. The little canals shine like ribbons of silver on the purple earth, the field of half-grown clover becomes a shimmer of. Before dealing with the special varieties of the Egyptians' belief in gods, it is best to try to avoid a misunderstanding of their whole conception of the supernatural. The term god has come to tacitly imply to our minds such a highly specialised group of attributes, that we can hardly throw our ideas back into the more remote conceptions to which we also attach the same name.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Books on Egypt and Chaldaea Reader in a handy form an account of the principal ideas and beliefs held by the ancient Egyptians con cerning the resurrection and the future life, which is derived wholly from native religious works.\ The literature of Egypt which deals with these subj/ects is large and, as was to be expected, the product of different periods which, taken together, cover several thousands of years; and it is exceedingly difficult at times to reconcile the statements and beliefs of a writer of one period with those of a writer of another. Up to the present no systematic account of the doctrine of the resurrection and of the future life has been discovered, and there is no reason for hoping that such a thing will ever be found, for the Egyptians do not appear to have thought that it was necessary to write a work of the kind. The inherent difficulty of the subject, and the natural impossibility that different men living in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Written in the tradition of historians like Mary Beard and Stacy Schiff who find modern lessons in ancient history, this provocative narrative explores the lives of five remarkable pharaohs who ruled Egypt with absolute power, shining a new light on the country's 3,000-year empire and its meaning today. In a new era when democracies around the world are threatened or crumbling, best-selling author Kara Cooney turns to five ancient Egyptian pharaohs--Khufu, Senwosret III, Akenhaten, Ramses II, and Taharqa--to understand why many so often give up power to the few, and what it can mean for our future. As the first centralized political power on earth, the pharaohs and their process of divine kingship can tell us a lot about the world's politics, past and present. Every animal-headed god, every monumental temple, every pyramid, every tomb, offers extraordinary insight into a culture that combined deeply held religious beliefs with uniquely human schemes to justify a system in which one ruled over many. From Khufu, the man who built the Great Pyramid at Giza as testament to his authoritarian reign, and Taharqa, the last true pharaoh who worked to make Egypt great again, we discover a clear lens into understanding how power was earned, controlled, and manipulated in ancient times. And in mining the past, Cooney uncovers the reason why societies have so willingly chosen a dictator over democracy, time and time again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Egypt I. Egypt, A wonderland - There have always been a peculiar interest and a charm attached to Ancient Egypt and its story, arising out of the romance and traditions connected with the land. It was to Egypt that Abraham went; in it Joseph fulfilled his high destiny; at its court and schools Moses received his early training; and there the Israelites groaned under the tyranny of Pharaoh, from which they were delivered only by the mighty power of Jehovah. The youthful nations of Greece and Rome were impressed by its hoary antiquity and high civilization, and to them also in many things Egypt became a schoolmaster. They, as all who Since have visited the Nile valley, stood with awe before its colossal works, its pyramids and temples, its Sphinx and obelisks, and spread the fame of them through all lands. We do not wonder then, that in the popular mind Egypt' was as a fabled land. Now, while there is more interest than ever in its story, Egypt is no longer regarded as a mere isolated wonder, like some extraordinary freak of nature, or one of its own pyramids but. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egyptian Magic A study of the remains of the native religious litera ture of ancient Egypt which have come down to us has revealed the fact that the belief in magic, that is to say, in the power of magical names, and spells, and enchantments, and formulae, and pictures, and figures, and amulets, and in the performance of ceremonies accompanied by the utterance of words of power, to produce supernatural results, formed a large and important part of the Egyptian religion. And it is certain that, notwithstanding the continuous progress which the Egyptians made in civilization, and the high intellectual development to which they eventually attained, this belief influenced their minds and, from the earliest to the latest period of their history, shaped their views concerning things temporal as well as spiritual in a manner which, at this stage in the history of the world, is very difficult to understand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt, Greece, and Rome The series of World Literature Readers, designed for use in Grades V - IX, aims to give a glimpse into the real life of the various nations of the world to open a gate upon a path which, if the youthful explorer wills to follow it, may lead him on into wide fields. He who has learned to read is no longer a citizen of one age or one land, but of all ages and all lands. Through literature and through art he may lose the boundaries of his own meager experience and win his way into the thoughts, ideals, aspira tions, knowledge, and visions of the best minds of all times and races the possessions of the entire human family. To realize our world heritage we need to touch the beginnings of things, in the folk tale and myth not only of our own people and land but of all peoples and lands; we need companionship with the heroes of the human race, not only the heroes of war and adventure but the heroes of our common life, - for the race, as Hamilton Mabie says. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The composition, which the editors entitle the "Book of Thoth", is preserved on over forty Graeco-Roman Period papyri from collections in Berlin, Copenhagen, Florence, New Haven, Paris, and Vienna. The central witness is a papyrus of fifteen columns in the Berlin Museum. Written almost entirely in the Demotic script, the Book of Thoth is probably the product of scribes of the "House of Life", the temple scriptorium. It comprises largely a dialogue between a deity, usually called "He-who-praises-knowledge" (presumably Thoth himself) and a mortal, "He-who-loves-knowledge". The work covers such topics as the scribal craft, sacred geography, the underworld, wisdom, prophecy, animal knowledge, and temple ritual. Particularly remarkable is one section (the "Vulture Text") in which each of the 42 nomes of Egypt is identified with a vulture. The language is poetic; the lines are often clearly organized into verses. The subject-matter, dialogue structure, and striking phraseology raise many issues of scholarly interest; especially intriguing are the possible connections between this Egyptian work, in which Thoth is called "thrice-great", and the classical Hermetic Corpus, in which Hermes Trismegistos plays the key role. The first volume comprises interpretative essays, discussion of specific points such as the manuscript tradition, script, and language. The core of the publication is the transliteration of the Demotic text, translation, and commentary. A consecutive translation, glossary, bibliography, and indices conclude the first volume. The second volume contains photographs of the papyri, almost all of which reproduce their original size.
