Review of sludge generation within conventional potable water treatment processes. Survey of sludge dewatering practice. Critical review of sludge dewatering theory, with proposed improvements. Report of new findings regarding sludge composition and properties, especially dewaterability, and the influence of coagulation conditions, raw water quality, and other processing operations thereupon. Discussion encompasses sludge generation from metal hydrolysis to precipitation, to aggregate formation, to gelation, to dewatering. Dewatering operations considered include clarification, thickening, centrifugation, and filtration. * * * Conventional drinking water treatment involves aggregation of contaminants with precipitated coagulant, which settle together into a sludge waste. The sludge volume includes much entrained water, which is usually difficult to remove. Efficient dewatering procedures: ¿maximise treated water quality and quantity; ¿reduce waste volume; and¿improve waste handleability. This study has investigated the effect of the treatment conditions on sludge dewatering properties using a phenomenological material properties approach. The approach has shown key differences due to dose, pH and water quality.

Book excerpt: Sludge formed by the neutralization of acid mine drainage is generally affected by the acid mine water composition and the method of neutralization used. The effects of both raw water chemistry and the various treatment processes on sludge composition are enumerated for each treatment process. The methods discussed include: Conventional lime neutralization; Mechanical aeration; Lagoon aeration; pH; and Sludge recirculation. Several other processes, described and studied in slightly more detail, include the High Density Sludge Process, the Densator Process, the Elpo Treatment Process, and the use of magnetic sludge. Methods of thickening, conditioning and dewatering are also presented, with vacuum filtration appearing as the most feasible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal hydrolysis is revolutionizing wastewater treatment. Current treatment methods have evolved little since pioneering work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Subsequently, most wastewater treatment plants are not designed to meet modern drivers such as energy conservation and nutrient recovery. Additionally, sludge management is expensive and often not viewed in high regard by external stakeholders. By changing the properties of sewage sludge, thermal hydrolysis allows wastewater treatment works to become more efficient, enabling the treatment of greater flowrates to higher standards. Production of renewable energy from sludge is increased, whilst quantity of treated material reduced, which further decreases processing requirements and costs regardless of what they may be. This book, aimed at students and practitioners alike, describes the development of the technology, and highlights the design and economics by means of examples. Benefits and challenges related to thermal hydrolysis are also characterized alongside selected case-studies and ideas for future applications. Dr William (Bill) Barber has had a keen interest in thermal hydrolysis for numerous years and was instrumental in the development of Europe's largest facility as well as advising water utilities, consultants, researchers and government organizations on its potential to modernize wastewater treatment.
