Book Synopsis The Missing Public Disputations of Jacobus Arminius by : Keith D. Stanglin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacobus Arminius (1559-1609) composed 61 public disputations during his brief tenure as professor of theology at Leiden University, 36 of which have never before been collected and published, and have been neglected by scholars for four centuries. This critical edition supplements the works of Arminius by presenting these texts in the original Latin, complete with notes and summaries in English. The texts are preceded by a helpful introduction to the genre of theological disputations. In addition, the question of disputation authorship is treated exhaustively for the first time, demonstrating Arminius's primary authorship of these documents.

Book Synopsis Duplex Regnum Christi by : Jonathon D. Beeke
Download or read book Duplex Regnum Christi written by Jonathon D. Beeke and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this historical study, Jonathon D. Beeke considers the various sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Reformed expressions regarding the duplex regnum Christi (the twofold kingdom of Christ), or, as especially denominated in the Lutheran context, the “doctrine of the two kingdoms.” While a sampling of patristic and medieval sources is considered, the focus is on select magisterial Reformers of the sixteenth century and representative intellectual centers of the seventeenth century (Leiden, Geneva, and Edinburgh). A primary concern is to examine the development of these formulations over the two centuries in question, and relate its maturation to the theological and political context of the early modern period. Various conclusions are offered that address the contemporary “two-kingdoms” debate within the Reformed tradition.
Book Synopsis Perfect Will Theology by : J. Martin Bac
Download or read book Perfect Will Theology written by J. Martin Bac and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits four early-modern debates of Reformed theology concerning the will of God. Reformed scholasticism advocated a particular relationship between divine knowledge, will, and power, which was altered by Jesuits, Remonstrants, Descartes, and Spinoza. In all these debates modal categories like contingency and necessity play a prominent part. Therefore, these positions are evaluated with the help of modern modal logic including possible world semantics. The final part of this study presents a systematic defense of the Reformed position, which has been charged of theological determinism and of making God the author of sin. In modern terms, therefore, the relation of divine and human freedom and the problem of evil are discussed.

Book Synopsis Natural and Political Conceptions of Community by : Christoph Philipp Haar
Download or read book Natural and Political Conceptions of Community written by Christoph Philipp Haar and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Natural and Political Conceptions of Community, Christoph Haar examines the role of the household community in Jesuit political thought. Introducing a fresh perspective on the early modern Jesuit academic discourse, the book explores how leading Jesuit thinkers drew on their theologically inspired conceptions of the family community to determine the usefulness as well as the limitations of the political realm. Natural and Political Conceptions of Community is about the place of the household in Scholastic theoretical works. The book demonstrates that Jesuits considered the human being as a household being when they determined the origin and purpose of the political community, producing a notion of politics that integrated their account of human nature with the sphere of law, rights, and virtues.
