Book Synopsis Luther and Late Medieval Thomism by : Denis R. Janz
Download or read book Luther and Late Medieval Thomism written by Denis R. Janz and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A careful analysis of Luther’s thought in the context of his age, this volume examines Luther’s links with later medieval Thomism. The study is organized on the theme of theological anthropology—the state of humans within a theological system. In the course of the discussion, Janz studies parallels and divergences between the thought of Luther and the thought of Thomas Aquinas, Peter Lombard, John Capreolus, Henry of Gorkum, Conrad Koellin, Karlstadt, and Cajetan. Janz suggests that at some crucial points late medieval Thomist teaching misrepresents the teaching of Thomas Aquinas. This, compounding Luther’s lack of direct knowledge of Thomas, helps to explain Luther’s opposition not only to his own nominalist teachers but to the scholastics generally. Students of late medieval and Reformation theology will find the wealth of primary citation and the detailed readings of the sources invaluable guides to the issues. Students of religion interested in contemporary problems in theological anthropology, in the natural capacity of humanity for good and evil, for example, will find the historical Christian perspective of great interest.

Book Synopsis Ecstatic Morality and Sexual Politics by : Graham James McAleer
Download or read book Ecstatic Morality and Sexual Politics written by Graham James McAleer and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book-length treatment of Thomas AquinasÆs theory of the body presents a Catholic understanding of the body and its implications for social and political philosophy. Making a fundamental contribution to antitotalitarian theory, McAleer argues that a sexual politics reliant upon AquinasÆs theory of the body is better (because less violent) than other commonly available theories. He contrasts this theory with those of four other groups of thinkers: the continental tradition represented by Kant, Schopenhauer, Merleau-Ponty, Nancy, Levinas, and Deleuze; feminism, in the work of Donna Haraway; an alternative Catholic theory to be found in Karl Rahner; and the ôRadical Orthodoxyö of John Milbank.

Book Synopsis Dante's Christian Ethics by : George Corbett
Download or read book Dante's Christian Ethics written by George Corbett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a major re-appraisal of the Commedia as originally envisaged by Dante: as a work of ethics. Privileging the ethical, Corbett increases our appreciation of Dante's eschatological innovations and literary genius. Drawing upon a wider range of moral contexts than in previous studies, this book presents an overarching account of the complex ordering and political programme of Dante's afterlife. Balancing close readings with a lucid overview of Dante's Commedia as an ethical and political manifesto, Corbett cogently approaches the poem through its moral structure. The book provides detailed interpretations of three particularly significant sins - pride, sloth, and avarice - and the three terraces of Purgatory devoted to them. While scholars register Dante's explicit confession of pride, the volume uncovers Dante's implicit confession of sloth and prodigality (the opposing subvice of avarice) through Statius, his moral cypher.
