Book excerpt: The Institutes are a complete exposition of the elements of Roman law and are divided into four books—the first treating of persons and the differences of the status they may occupy in the eye of the law; the second-of things, and the modes in which rights over them may be acquired, including the law relating to wills; the third of intestate succession and of obligations; the fourth of actions and their forms. For many centuries they had been the familiar textbook of all students of Roman law.

Download or read book Water and fire written by Daniel Anlezark and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noah’s Flood is one of the Bible’s most popular stories, and flood myths survive in many cultures today. This book presents the first comprehensive examination of the incorporation of the Flood myth into the Anglo-Saxon imagination. Focusing on literary representations, it contributes to our understanding of how Christian Anglo-Saxons perceived their place in the cosmos. For them, history unfolded between the primeval Deluge and a future – perhaps imminent – flood of fire, which would destroy the world. This study reveals both an imaginative diversity and shared interpretations of the Flood myth. Anglo-Saxons saw the Flood as a climactic event in God’s ongoing war with his more rebellious creatures, but they also perceived the mystery of redemption through baptism. Anlezark studies a range of texts against their historical background, and discusses shifting emphases in the way the Flood was interpreted for diverse audiences. The book concludes with a discussion of Beowulf, relating the epic poem’s presentation of the Flood myth to that of other Anglo-Saxon texts.

Book Synopsis Lorenzo Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise by : Amy R. Bloch
Download or read book Lorenzo Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise written by Amy R. Bloch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 874 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the heretofore unsuspected complexity of Lorenzo Ghiberti's sculpted representations of Old Testament narratives in his Gates of Paradise (1425–52), the second set of doors he made for the Florence Baptistery and a masterpiece of Italian Renaissance sculpture. One of the most intellectually engaged and well-read artists of his age, Ghiberti found inspiration in ancient and medieval texts, many of which he and his contacts in Florence's humanist community shared, read, and discussed. He was fascinated by the science of vision, by the functioning of nature, and, above all, by the origins and history of art. These unusually well-defined intellectual interests, reflected in his famous Commentaries, shaped his approach in the Gates. Through the selection, imaginative interpretation, and arrangement of biblical episodes, Ghiberti fashioned multi-textured narratives that explore the human condition and express his ideas on a range of social, political, artistic, and philosophical issues.

Book Synopsis Health, Rights and Dignity by : Christian Erk
Download or read book Health, Rights and Dignity written by Christian Erk and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health as a human right has become pervasive. It has been acknowledged by a variety of international law documents, which entered the political realm and academic circles. Yet, despite its prominence, health as a human right remains a mystery —especially with respect to its philosophical underpinnings. To address this unfortunate insufficiency, Health, Rights and Dignity critically assesses the stipulation that health is a human right, which—as international law holds—derives from the inherent dignity of the human person. The author scrutinizes concepts underlying this stipulation (health, rights, dignity) and concludes that such a right cannot be upheld from a philosophical perspective.
