Book excerpt: The aim of the 6th International Fatigue Congress, besides covering the entire field of fatigue, was to promote the intimate connection between basic science and engineering application by the selection of appropriate session topics. Fatigue is the main cause of failure of engineering structures and components. Making reliable fatigue predictions is highly difficult because knowledge about fatigue mechanisms in all stages of the fatigue process must be developed much further. In addition, the decreasing availability of raw materials and energy resources forces engineers to continually reduce the weight of constructions. This congress presents research results also particularly for new materials, including composites. Researchers, on the other hand, are confronted with the engineering demands. Futhermore, the overwhelming development which is presently taking place in the field of computer software and hardware dealing with fatigue problems is outlined along with the directions of future developments in all areas of fatigue. Close to 300 fully peer-reviewed papers are published in the proceedings, including nearly 30 overview and keynote papers covering the various session topics. The proceedings should therefore serve as a comprehensive review of the fatigue field at the present state-of-the-art, suitable for scientists, engineers and students.

Book excerpt: The role of energy in the modern world goes beyond mere technology and economics to influence welfare, the environment, the quality of life and, in broad terms, civilization itself. Since the Industrial Revolution, energy conservation technology has been at the forefront of the innovation required to satisfy the needs of mankind and, more than any other, this technology has always depended on the performance of the materials used.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high-temperature low-cycle fatigue (HTLCF) behavior of mechanically alloyed oxide dispersion strengthened MA 754 nickel-base alloy was studied under strain-controlled condition at 850°C. Specimens were cut from the longitudinal and the long transverse directions of the bar stock. Triangular strain cycles as well as strain cycles with hold times were employed in this study. In general, longitudinal specimens exhibited the longest lives, long transverse specimens the shortest lives. The cycles with tensile hold times were the most damaging to the HTLCF lives of specimens of both orientations. The difference between the HTLCF response of the alloy in the longitudinal and the long transverse orientations is interpreted in terms of factors such as modes of crack initiation and propagation, anisotropy in crack growth rates, and the directionality in creep properties. Three models for HTLCF lifetime were evaluated for their ability to correlate the fatigue data on MA 754 in both orientations. These models are the Strain Range Partitioning Model (SRP), the Frequency-Separation Model (FS), and the Frequency-Modified Damage Function (FMDF). The correlations of the data, having the smallest standard deviations of 0.22 and 0.14 for the longitudinal and the long transverse orientations, respectively, were by the FS model. The FMDF and the SRP models had standard deviations, for the longitudinal orientations, of 0.25 and 0.33, respectively.

Book Synopsis Elevated Temperature Fatigue-creep Behavior of Nickel-base Superalloy in 625 by :
Download or read book Elevated Temperature Fatigue-creep Behavior of Nickel-base Superalloy in 625 written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superalloy Inconel 625 is a potential candidate material for use in structural components subjected to cyclic loadings at high temperatures, such as parts of jet engines and nuclear reactors. This report discusses the results of a research program carried out to provide the mechanical properties on the low-cycle fatigue and creep-fatigue behaviour of IN 625 at elevated temperatures (650 and 815C). Under continuous cycling, the data base of the material is established and the influence of hold-times introduced in each cycle (interspersed creep-fatigue) on the material life is then examined. A life prediction procedure recently suggested was applied to the data obtained under cyclic loading, with and without hold times. The overall correlation between isothermal experimental results and theoretical predictions is discussed.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ON THE BASIS OF THE LIMITED DATA THAT ARE PRESENTED IN THIS STUDY, IT MAY BE CONCLUDED THAT THE EFFECT OF CREEP DAMAGE ON THE LOW CYCLE FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF Rene 95 at 1200 F is not very severe. This is probably because of the good stress rupture properties of the material at this temperature. Strain Range Partitioning approach does not seem to hold much promise for analyzing, and therefore, for predicting strain controlled low cycle fatigue behavior of Rene 95 under creep-fatigue conditions at 1200 F. When compared to the SRP approach, the Frequency Modified approach appears less cumbersome and, hence, more advantageous. The present study indicates, however, that the FM approach using the frequencies calculated on the basis of the actual cycles holds only a slight edge over that involving unmodified inelastic strain range versus cyclic life representation. At present, the damage approach proposed by Ostergren seems to offer more potential as it takes into account the aspect of loop shift that accompanies fatigue cycling of Rene 95.
