Download or read book Thermodynamically consistent space-time discretization of non-isothermal mechanical systems in the framework of GENERIC written by Schiebl, Mark Georg and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work addresses the design of structure-preserving numerical methods that emanate from the general equation for non-equilibrium reversible-irreversible coupling (GENERIC) formalism. Novel energy-momentum (EM) consistent time-stepping schemes in the realm of molecular dynamics are proposed. Moreover, the GENERIC-based structure-preserving numerical methods are extended to the context of large-strain thermoelasticity and thermo-viscoelasticity.

Book Synopsis Multi-field modeling and simulation of fiber-reinforced polymers by : Schulte, Jonathan
Download or read book Multi-field modeling and simulation of fiber-reinforced polymers written by Schulte, Jonathan and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work proposes a new numerical approach for analyzing the behavior of fiber-reinforced materials, which have gained popularity in various applications. The approach combines theories and methods to model the fracture behavior of the polymeric matrix and the embedded fibers separately, and includes a modified plasticity model that considers the temperature-dependent growth of voids. Tests are conducted to explore different types and sequences of failure in long fiber-reinforced polymers.

This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposed in the early 1990s, the enhanced assumed strain (EAS) method is one of the probably most successful mixed finite element methods for solid mechanics. This cumulative dissertation gives a comprehensive overview of previous publications on that method and covers recent improvements for EAS elements. In particular, we describe three key issues of standard EAS elements and develop corresponding solutions.

Book Synopsis Singular Limits in Thermodynamics of Viscous Fluids by : Eduard Feireisl
Download or read book Singular Limits in Thermodynamics of Viscous Fluids written by Eduard Feireisl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-28 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many interesting problems in mathematical fluid dynamics involve the behavior of solutions of nonlinear systems of partial differential equations as certain parameters vanish or become infinite. Frequently the limiting solution, provided the limit exists, satisfies a qualitatively different system of differential equations. This book is designed as an introduction to the problems involving singular limits based on the concept of weak or variational solutions. The primitive system consists of a complete system of partial differential equations describing the time evolution of the three basic state variables: the density, the velocity, and the absolute temperature associated to a fluid, which is supposed to be compressible, viscous, and heat conducting. It can be represented by the Navier-Stokes-Fourier-system that combines Newton's rheological law for the viscous stress and Fourier's law of heat conduction for the internal energy flux. As a summary, this book studies singular limits of weak solutions to the system governing the flow of thermally conducting compressible viscous fluids.

Book Synopsis Invariant Manifolds for Physical and Chemical Kinetics by : Alexander N. Gorban
Download or read book Invariant Manifolds for Physical and Chemical Kinetics written by Alexander N. Gorban and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By bringing together various ideas and methods for extracting the slow manifolds, the authors show that it is possible to establish a more macroscopic description in nonequilibrium systems. The book treats slowness as stability. A unifying geometrical viewpoint of the thermodynamics of slow and fast motion enables the development of reduction techniques, both analytical and numerical. Examples considered in the book range from the Boltzmann kinetic equation and hydrodynamics to the Fokker-Planck equations of polymer dynamics and models of chemical kinetics describing oxidation reactions. Special chapters are devoted to model reduction in classical statistical dynamics, natural selection, and exact solutions for slow hydrodynamic manifolds. The book will be a major reference source for both theoretical and applied model reduction. Intended primarily as a postgraduate-level text in nonequilibrium kinetics and model reduction, it will also be valuable to PhD students and researchers in applied mathematics, physics and various fields of engineering.
Download or read book Exergy Method written by Jan Szargut and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exergy method makes it possible to detect and quantify the possibilities of improving thermal and chemical processes and systems. The introduction of the concept thermo-ecological cost (cumulative consumption of non-renewable natural exergy resources) generated large application possibilities of exergy in ecology. This book contains a short presentation on the basic principles of exergy analysis and discusses new achievements in the field over the last 15 years. One of the most important issues considered by the distinguished author is the economy of non-renewable natural exergy. Previously discussed only in scientific journals, other important new problems highlighted include: calculation of the chemical exergy of all the stable chemical elements, global natural and anthropogenic exergy losses, practical guidelines for improvement of the thermodynamic imperfection of thermal processes and systems, development of the determination methods of partial exergy losses in thermal systems, evaluation of the natural mineral capital of the Earth, and the application of exergy for the determination of a pro-ecological tax.A basic knowledge of thermodynamics is assumed, and the book is therefore most appropriate for graduate students and engineers working in the field of energy and ecological management.

This book was released on 2008-04-19 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting original results from both theoretical and numerical viewpoints, this text offers a detailed discussion of the variational approach to brittle fracture. The authors model crack initiation, crack path, and crack extension for arbitrary geometries and loads.

Mathematics can put quantitative phenomena in a new light; in turn applications may provide a vivid support for mathematical concepts. This volume illustrates some aspects of the mathematical treatment of phase transitions, namely, the classical Stefan problem and its generalizations. The in tended reader is a researcher in application-oriented mathematics. An effort has been made to make a part of the book accessible to beginners, as well as physicists and engineers with a mathematical background. Some room has also been devoted to illustrate analytical tools. This volume deals with research I initiated when I was affiliated with the Istituto di Analisi Numerica del C.N.R. in Pavia, and then continued at the Dipartimento di Matematica dell'Universita di Trento. It was typeset by the author in plain TEX

Book Synopsis Foundations of Statistical Mechanics by : O. Penrose
Download or read book Foundations of Statistical Mechanics written by O. Penrose and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs in Natural Philosophy, Volume 22: Foundations of Statistical Mechanics: A Deductive Treatment presents the main approaches to the basic problems of statistical mechanics. This book examines the theory that provides explicit recognition to the limitations on one's powers of observation. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the main physical assumptions and their idealization in the form of postulates. This text then examines the consequences of these postulates that culminate in a derivation of the fundamental formula for calculating probabilities in terms of dynamic quantities. Other chapters provide a careful analysis of the significant notion of entropy, which shows the links between thermodynamics and statistical mechanics and also between communication theory and statistical mechanics. The final chapter deals with the thermodynamic concept of entropy. This book is intended to be suitable for students of theoretical physics. Probability theorists, statisticians, and philosophers will also find this book useful.
