Book excerpt: This volume presents a collection of critically assessed data on inorganic compounds which are of special interest in nuclear reactor safety studies. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations are an important and widely used instrument in the understanding of the chemical behaviour and release of fission products in the course of nuclear reactor accidents. The reliability of such calculations is, nevertheless, limited by the availability of accurate input data for relevant compounds. The present work examines a wide variety of elements and compounds (oxides, hydroxides, actinides, iodides, tellurides, alloys, and ternary oxides) relevant to light water and fast nuclear reactors, in their condensed and gaseous state, many of which have been evaluated here for the first time. Recommended values, obtained from a critical evaluation of the literature, are given in an extensive explanatory text, and compiled in thermochemical tables from 298 to 3000 K. Special attention is also given to the crystallographic properties of the condensed phases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nagra/PSI Chemical Thermodynamic Data Base 01/01 is an encyclopedia of thermodynamic data recommended for environmental studies. The data base focuses on elements commonly found as major solutes in natural waters, and on actinides and fission products relevant for radioactive waste disposal projects. It is the official chemical thermodynamic data base used in Swiss radioactive waste disposal projects. The detailed discussion of every number recommended in this encyclopedia is the result of a multi man-year project of the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), a Swiss National Lab. The five authors of this work have many years of experience in research, data base development and the application of thermodynamic data in environmental studies. The data included for many elements are based on their reviews of the basic literature. The data base also includes additional data selected by the authors from recommendations of other experts in ground- water geochemistry and of the international data base project of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA).This report is indispensable for every scientist working in the field of environmental studies as the comprehensive source of information on the quality of the thermodynamic data governing particular problems in environmental geochemistry, especially those concerned with the fate of hazardous substances. This enables graduate students, researchers and consultants, as well as regulators and reviewers of scientific papers to assess the scientific basis of environmental modeling studies. The encyclopedia can be used as a stand-alone source of knowledge but amplereferences are provided for readers who wish to go beyond the level of discussion in the book. An electronic version of the data base and a data base management program is available for download at our homepage (http://les.web.psi.ch/TDBbook.htm).

WESTBROOK The Series, "Data and Knowledge in a Changing World", exemplifies CODATA's primary purpose of collecting, from widely different fields, a wealth of information on efficient exploitation of data for progress in science and technology and making that information available to scientists and engineers. A separate and complementary CODATA Reference Series will present Directories of compiled and evaluated data and Glossaries of data-related terms. The present book "Thermodynamic Modeling and Materials Data Engineering" discusses thermodynamic, structural, systemic and heuristic approaches to the modeling of complex materials behavior in condensed phases, both fluids and solids, in order to evaluate their potential applications. Itwas inspired by the Symposium on "Materials and Structural Properties" held during the 14th International CODATA Conference in Chambery, France. The quality of the contributions to this Symposium motivated us to present" a coherent book of interest to the field. Updated contributions inspired by Symposium discussions and selections from other CODATA workshops concerning material properties data and Computer Aided Design combine to highlight the complexity of material data issues on experimental, theoretical and simulation levels Articles were selected for their pertinence in three areas. Complex data leading to interesting developments and tools such as: • new developments in state equations and their applications, • prediction and validation of physical and energy data by group correlations for pure compounds, • modeling and prediction of mixture properties.

Book excerpt: Materials in a nuclear environment are exposed to extreme conditions of radiation, temperature and/or corrosion, and in many cases the combination of these makes the material behavior very different from conventional materials. This is evident for the four major technological challenges the nuclear technology domain is facing currently: (i) long-term operation of existing Generation II nuclear power plants, (ii) the design of the next generation reactors (Generation IV), (iii) the construction of the ITER fusion reactor in Cadarache (France), (iv) and the intermediate and final disposal of nuclear waste. In order to address these challenges, engineers and designers need to know the properties of a wide variety of materials under these conditions and to understand the underlying processes affecting changes in their behavior, in order to assess their performance and to determine the limits of operation. Comprehensive Nuclear Materials, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set provides broad ranging, validated summaries of all the major topics in the field of nuclear material research for fission as well as fusion reactor systems. Attention is given to the fundamental scientific aspects of nuclear materials: fuel and structural materials for fission reactors, waste materials, and materials for fusion reactors. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource of information. Most of the chapters from the first Edition have been revised and updated and a significant number of new topics are covered in completely new material. During the ten years between the two editions, the challenge for applications of nuclear materials has been significantly impacted by world events, public awareness, and technological innovation. Materials play a key role as enablers of new technologies, and we trust that this new edition of Comprehensive Nuclear Materials has captured the key recent developments. Critically reviews the major classes and functions of materials, supporting the selection, assessment, validation and engineering of materials in extreme nuclear environments Comprehensive resource for up-to-date and authoritative information which is not always available elsewhere, even in journals Provides an in-depth treatment of materials modeling and simulation, with a specific focus on nuclear issues Serves as an excellent entry point for students and researchers new to the field

Book excerpt: The world needs to find a solution to the current energy crisis. However, a very efficient and theoretically clean source energy, namely nuclear power, is experiencing a lack of trust from society. Nuclear fuel is not durable enough, reactor accidents happen, nuclear waste needs to be reused or disposed and the waste kept from harming the environment for thousands of years. Many challenges still surround the field of sustainable nuclear power, and here I proudly contribute some fundamental research towards the development of sustainable nuclear energy. The current study is not a sole research of one topic regarding a specific problem related to nuclear fuel cycle. It is rather a collaborative effort of scientists from two continents trying to tackle the problems of various sides of the nuclear fuel cycle with my contribution coming from the thermochemical perspective. Gaining fundamental thermodynamic understanding of the materials is an essential part of the sustainable energy research that would allow for an efficient and safe use of materials under extreme conditions. The current work consists of three parts, each devoted to a particular problem in the nuclear fuel cycle. Part I discusses the formation of fluorite structured solid solutions on examples of UO2-ThO2, UO2-ZrO2 (Chapter 2) and CeO2-CaO-ZrO2 (Chapter 3). All these materials are related to nuclear fuel fabrication before fuel is set in the reactor and fuel behavior during irradiation and fission. ThO2-based fuels show better thermophysical properties and chemical stability than conventional UO2 fuels, which suggest better in-pile performance. Urania-zirconia solid solutions are expected to improve the chemical stability and radiation resistance of fuel pellets and hence are of great interest for immobilization and disposal of spent nuclear fuel. The ternary CaO-ZrO2-CeO2 system is interesting due to its applicability as an analogue for plutonium recycling in the form of inert matrix fuel based on stabilized zirconia. Enthalpies of formation and mixing were experimentally determined for all these systems and the extent of formation of the fluorite phase was discussed. Part II presents a successful combination of structural and thermodynamic studies applied to investigate one crucial aspect of nuclear fuel life - the radiation damage during burnup and storage. Chapter 4 focuses on the defect production and annealing in swift heavy ion irradiation nuclear fuel (CeO2 used as an analogue of PuO2). Chapter 5 is the study of naturally irradiated pyrochlores, proposed as a potential nuclear waste form. It was found that energetic destabilization in CeO2 is strongly coupled to atomic disordering on the oxygen sublattice and can be fully annealed at elevated temperatures. In pyrochlores, the initial degree of structural destabilization was found to be the most influential parameter in the behavior of the irradiated material during recrystallization. Part III is devoted to finding stable form of a nuclear waste. Phosphate structures are promising forms for such applications Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the formation and mixing properties of solid solutions in rare earth monazites (La,Eu/Gd)PO4 and (La,Pr)PO4 while Chapter 8 focuses on the thermodynamic properties of a series of hydrated rare earth phosphates (rhabdophanes). The obtained Margules interaction parameters showed that continuous solid solutions form for temperatures at which monazite is the stable lanthanide phosphate form. Rhabdophanes were shown to be thermodynamically metastable with respect to the corresponding monazites plus water at all temperatures under ambient pressure conditions. This conclusion strengthened the case for monazites being an excellent nuclear waste form. The appendix contains original calorimetric data and powder X-ray diffraction scans performed on the materials studied in this work. For all the collaborative studies performed during this dissertation, my primary experimental input was obtaining all the thermodynamic data mainly by applying high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The initial phase/chemical composition control of the samples (powder X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis) was also my responsibility in order to ensure the quality of the results. After collection and processing the data, I did much of the primary thermodynamic interpretation and wrote reports, which, in many cases, formed the first drafts of the published papers. I then actively participated in the publication process of each manuscript.

Book excerpt: The Chemistry of the Actinide and Transactinide Elements is a contemporary and definitive compilation of chemical properties of all of the actinide elements, especially of the technologically important elements uranium and plutonium, as well as the transactinide elements. In addition to the comprehensive treatment of the chemical properties of each element, ion, and compound from atomic number 89 (actinium) through to 109 (meitnerium), this multi-volume work has specialized and definitive chapters on electronic theory, optical and laser fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, organoactinide chemistry, thermodynamics, magnetic properties, the metals, coordination chemistry, separations, and trace analysis. Several chapters deal with environmental science, safe handling, and biological interactions of the actinide elements. The Editors invited teams of authors, who are active practitioners and recognized experts in their specialty, to write each chapter and have endeavoured to provide a balanced and insightful treatment of these fascinating elements at the frontier of the periodic table. Because the field has expanded with new spectroscopic techniques and environmental focus, the work encompasses five volumes, each of which groups chapters on related topics. All chapters represent the current state of research in the chemistry of these elements and related fields.
