Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal fatigue (TF) behaviour of two single crystal nickel-based super-alloys, SRR99 and CMSX-4, is reported. Single edge wedge specimens are rapidly heated by induction heating of the wedge tip to a maximum temperature between 1000‡C and 1175‡C and cooled to 200‡C by forced air. A constant cycle period is employed for all experiments. The strain distribution along the edge of the TF specimens is measured. Changing the induction frequency leads to different strain ranges. CMSX-4 shows crack initiation always on cast microporosities. SRR99 presents an additional oxidation/spalling/re-oxidation mechanism under low strain loading. An "integrated approach" combining TF and TMF (thermo-mechanical fatigue) is proposed. The applied TMF temperature-strain cycle is deduced from the measured TF-cycle. Under this new temperature-strain cycle the crack initiation life and the total life in TMF for SRR99 are compared with the TF results.

Book excerpt: The aim of the 6th International Fatigue Congress, besides covering the entire field of fatigue, was to promote the intimate connection between basic science and engineering application by the selection of appropriate session topics. Fatigue is the main cause of failure of engineering structures and components. Making reliable fatigue predictions is highly difficult because knowledge about fatigue mechanisms in all stages of the fatigue process must be developed much further. In addition, the decreasing availability of raw materials and energy resources forces engineers to continually reduce the weight of constructions. This congress presents research results also particularly for new materials, including composites. Researchers, on the other hand, are confronted with the engineering demands. Futhermore, the overwhelming development which is presently taking place in the field of computer software and hardware dealing with fatigue problems is outlined along with the directions of future developments in all areas of fatigue. Close to 300 fully peer-reviewed papers are published in the proceedings, including nearly 30 overview and keynote papers covering the various session topics. The proceedings should therefore serve as a comprehensive review of the fatigue field at the present state-of-the-art, suitable for scientists, engineers and students.

Book excerpt: Results of collaborative research by "Subcommittee on Superalloys and Coatings" in The Society of Materials Science, Japan (JSMS), are presented, which cover the thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) and high temperature isothermal low-cycle fatigue (ILCF) strengths of Ni-Base superalloy, substrate alloys and the protective coatings. Three kinds of Ni-base superalloys were selected as the substrate: a single crystal alloy, CMSX-4; a directionally solidified alloy, CM247LC; and a polycrystalline alloy, IN738LC. On these substrate specimens the CoNiCrAlY alloy was coated by 250 ?m in thickness by low pressure plasma spraying, and then aluminized. This process was managed and undertaken by one of member companies of the Subcommittee. The round robin TMF and ILCF tests were carried out under a strain ratio of -1 at temperature ranged between 400 and 900°C. In the former the tests were performed under the out-of-phase and diamond phase conditions in which the phase difference between strain and temperature were 180° and 90°, respectively. It is shown by the round-robin tests that the TMF lives, as well as the ILCF, were strongly dependent on the substrate alloys. Many important, or noteworthy results were also found: e.g., the TMF fracture behavior of the coated specimens revealed some unique characteristics that were hardly deduced from that of the bare specimens. The effect of coating on the ILCF life was strongly dependent on the temperature. It was not reasonable, or difficult to try to estimate the TMF life of the coatings from the ILCF test results. Based on the observations on the crack initiation, propagation and the fracture surface, the effects of the substrate alloy and the coating on the TMF and ILCF lives were discussed.

Book excerpt: The International Symposium "Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading", held at Petten (The Netherlands) on May 22-24, 1995, was jointly organized by the Institute for Advanced Materials of The Joint Research Centre, E. C. , and by the Societe Fran~se de Metallurgie et de Materiaux. The fast heating and cooling cycles experienced by many high temperature components cause thermally induced stresses, which often operate in combination with mechanical loads. The resulting thermal / mechanical fatigue cycle leads to material degradation mechanisms and failure modes typical of service cycles. The growing awareness that the synergism between the combined thermal and mechanical loads can not be reproduced by means of isothermal tests, has resulted in an increasing interest in thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue testing. This trend has been reinforced by the constant pull by industry for more performant, yet safer high temperature systems, pushing the materials to the limit of their properties. Dedicated ASTM meetings in particular have set the scene for this area of research. The proceedings of the symposium organized by D. A. Spera and D. F. Mowbray in 1975 provided a reference book on thermal fatigue which reflects the knowledge and experimental capabilities of the mid-seventies.

Book excerpt: This paper deals with the comparison between thermal fatigue (TF) and thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) testing for SRR99 superalloy. First, a measured TF mechanical strain-temperature (?m-T) profile between 200°C and 1100°C has been reproduced on a TMF specimen to allow for an estimation of the stresses and inelastic strains which occur during TF. Thermal-fatigue-based (TFB) ?m-T profiles were determined based on the measured TF profiles. These TFB cycles, together with the well-known out-of-phase profile, were employed for all of TMF tests. The comparison of the results reveals that the TF and TMF out-phase tests are more damaging in terms both of the applied stress and strain range, while the TMF out-of-phase test is more severe if the comparison is made in terms of the inelastic strain range. Finally, it is shown that the results can be rationalized quite well by plotting the fatigue lives as a function of the maximum stabilized stress (?max).

Book excerpt: This research establishes a physics-based life determination model for the second generation single crystal superalloy PWA 1484 experiencing out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue (TMF). The life model was developed as a result of a combination of critical mechanical tests, dominant damage characterization and utilization of well-established literature. The resulting life model improves life prediction over currently employed methods and provides for extrapolation into yet unutilized operating regimes. Particularly, the proposed deformation model accounts for the materials' coupled fatigue-environment-microstructure response to TMF loading. Because the proposed model is be based upon the underlying deformation physics, the model is robust enough to be easily modified for other single crystal superalloys having similar microstructure. Future use of this model for turbine life estimation calculations would be based upon the actual deformation experienced by the turbine blade, thereby enabling turbine maintenance scheduling based upon on a "retirement for a cause" life management scheme rather than the currently employed "safe-life" calculations. This advancement has the ability to greatly reduce maintenance costs to the turbine end-user since turbine blades would be removed from service for practical and justifiable reasons. Additionally this work will enable a rethinking of the warranty period, thereby decreasing warranty related replacements. Finally, this research provides a more thorough understanding of the deformation mechanisms present in loading situations that combine fatigue-environment-microstructure effects.
