Book excerpt: A study was conducted to determine methodology for combining thermal structural loads and assessing the effects of the combined loads on the design of a thermal protection system and a hot structure of a high cross range delta wing space shuttle orbiter vehicle. The study presents guidelines for establishing a basis for predicting thermal and pressure environments and for determining limit and ultimate design loads on the vehicle during reentry. Limit trajectories were determined by using dispersions on a representative nominal mission and system parameters expected during the life of the vehicle. Nine chosen locations on the vehicle surface having TPS or hot structures were examined, and weight sensitivity analyses were performed for each location.

The first concept is an approximate thermal analysis based on the first derivatives of structural temperatures with respect to design variables. Two commonly used first-order Taylor series expansions are examined. The direct and reciprocal expansions are special members of a general family of approximations, and for some conditions other members of that family of approximations are more accurate. Several examples are used to compare the accuracy of the different expansions. The second approximation concept is the use of critical time points for combined thermal and stress analyses of structures with transient loading conditions. Significant time savings are realized by identifying critical time points and performing the stress analysis for those points only. The design of an insulated panel which is exposed to transient heating conditions is discussed. Haftka, R. T. and Shore, C. P. Langley Research Center NASA-TP-1428, L-12674 RTOP 505-02-53-01...

Book excerpt: A structural test requirement of the National Aero-Space Plane (NASP) program has resulted in the design, fabrication, and implementation of a combined loads test fixture. Principal requirements for the fixture are testing a 4- by 4-ft hat-stiffened panel with combined axial (either tension or compression) and shear load at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 915 F, keeping the test panel stresses caused by the mechanical loads uniform, and thermal stresses caused by non-uniform panel temperatures minimized. The panel represents the side fuselage skin of an experimental aerospace vehicle, and was produced for the NASP program. A comprehensive mechanical loads test program using the new test fixture has been conducted on this panel from room temperature to 500 F. Measured data have been compared with finite-element analyses predictions, verifying that uniform load distributions were achieved by the fixture. The overall correlation of test data with analysis is excellent. The panel stress distributions and temperature distributions are very uniform and fulfill program requirements. This report provides details of an analytical and experimental validation of the combined loads test fixture. Because of its simple design, this unique test fixture can accommodate panels from a variety of aerospace vehicle designs.Fields, Roger A. and Richards, W. Book excerpt: High Temperature Structures and Materials is a compilation of the proceedings of the Third Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics held at Columbia University in New York on January 23-25, 1963. The symposium provided a forum for discussing structural mechanics under conditions of elevated temperatures. Emphasis is placed on the various aspects of structural design for elevated temperature service. The following areas are covered: material aspects of elevated temperature design; effects of high-speed environment; thermal stress analysis; and design criteria and reliability. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins by assessing the temperature dependence of elastic and anelastic properties in solids, followed by a discussion on the thermo-mechanical behavior of ceramics. Subsequent chapters explore the physical aspects of creep; thermal fatigue and its relation to creep rupture and mechanical fatigue; materials aspects of the re-entry problem; and problems of heat conduction and melting. Thermal stresses in viscoelastic solids are also considered, along with creep design and aspects of reliability under conditions of elevated temperature creep and fatigue. This monograph will be a valuable resource for material physicists and mechanical and structural designers concerned with the problem of elevated temperature effects on the performance and safety of modern structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of structures subjected to elevated temperature environments has long been an important area of study in the aerospace industry. This is especially true in the modern day, where new problems related to embedded engine aircraft and high temperature exhaust-washed structures present new structural design challenges not found in past applications. In this work, the response of a class of thermal structures whose responses are characterized by significant amounts of restrained expansion, to which exhaust-washed structures belong, are studied. To address the complex design challenges that become evident in these investigations, structural topology optimization is applied due to its unique ability to identify optimal material layout. Since conventional methods for topology optimization fail to generate effective designs in the presence of thermoelastic effects, new formulations for thermoelastic topology optimization are demonstrated. These include techniques for addressing the amount of reaction loading generated by a structural concept and methods for incorporating stress-based design criteria in topology optimization problems with design-dependent thermal loading. When taken together, the developments in this work provide a design technique in which stresses can be directly treated in thermal structures by identifying the proper arrangement of structural components in a thermal environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many factors affect the amount of temperature-induced movement that occurs in a building and the extent to which this movement can occur before serious damage develops or extensive maintenance is required. In some cases joints are being omitted where they are needed, creating a risk of structural failures or causing unnecessary operations and maintenance costs. In other cases, expansion joints are being used where they are not required, increasing the initial cost of construction and creating space utilization problems. As of 1974, there were no nationally acceptable procedures for precise determination of the size and the location of expansion joints in buildings. Most designers and federal construction agencies individually adopted and developed guidelines based on experience and rough calculations leading to significant differences in the various guidelines used for locating and sizing expansion joints. In response to this complex problem, Expansion Joints in Buildings: Technical Report No. 65 provides federal agencies with practical procedures for evaluating the need for through-building expansion joints in structural framing systems. The report offers guidelines and criteria to standardize the practice of expansion joints in buildings and decrease problems associated with the misuse of expansions joints. Expansions Joints in Buildings: Technical Report No. 65 also makes notable recommendations concerning expansion, isolation, joints, and the manner in which they permit separate segments of the structural frame to expand and to contract in response to temperature fluctuations without adversely affecting the buildings structural integrity or serviceability.

Book excerpt: A significant area of interest in design of complex structures involves the study of multidisciplined problems. The coordination of several different intricate areas of study to obtain a particular design of a structure is a new and pressing area of research. In the past, each discipline would perform its task consecutively using the appropriate inputs from the other disciplines. This process usually required several time-consuming iterations to obtain a satisfactory design. The alternative pursued here is combining various participating disciplines and specified design requirements into a formal structural computer code. The main focus of this research is to develop a multidiscipline structural tailoring method for select composite structures and to demonstrate its application to specific areas. The development of an integrated computer program involves the coupling of three independent computer programs using an excutive module. This module will be the foundation for integrating a structural optimizer, a composites analyzer and a thermal analyzer. With the completion of the executive module, the first step was taken toward the evolution of multidiscipline software in the field of composite mechanics. Through the use of an array of cases involving a variety of objective functions/constraints and thermal-mechanical load conditions, it became evident that simple composite structures can be designed to a combined loads environment. Book excerpt: A survey was made of the basic aerodynamics and materials data for the study of thermal structures. A review was also made of the basic structural theory that has been developed. Ways are suggested in which the designer should use the basic data and theory to decide on the general form of structure in any particular application. A special discussion is made on the new feature in structural design of combining strains due to temperature and strains due to load. Special emphasis is placed upon its effect on design requirements. (Author).
