Book excerpt: Injector fouling bench tests(IFBT) and modified Jet Fuel Thermal Oxidation Test(JFTOT, ASTMD 3241) have been used to develop methodology for evaluating the thermal stability of diesel fuels. A new method for measuring the thickness of lacquer-type fuel deposits formed on test surfaces at elevated temperatures has been developed and applied to a variety of fuels, both with and without MIL-S-53021(additive stabilizer package). The utility of this technique greatly expands the capability for exploring and defining diesel fuel thermal stability with respect to both material and kinetic studies. Correlation of IFBT and JFTOT types tests including definitions of temperature, flow, test surface metallurgy and fuel additive effects can now be performed to better understand diesel thermal stability and provide test methodology/test limit information for fuel specification consideration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuel-oriented problems occurring in the field prompted an investigation to examine the thermal-oxidation characteristics of diesel fuels. Because of the absence of any laboratory bench-scale techniques designed to predict these fuel filter plugging and/or injector fouling tendencies, initial experimentation was directed towards developing an accelerated thermal-oxidation technique. To establish valid test conditions actual diesel fuel system temperatures were obtained from Engineering and Service (E and S) test programs and also monitored under road dynamometer testing. A second attempt involved the use of an ASTM-CRC Fuel Coker which was operated in a recycle mode to simulate the geometry of automotive diesel fuel systems. Initial experiments with this technique have revealed its capability to differentiate diesel fuel quality in terms of thermal-oxidation stability. (Author).

This book was released on 2009 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fischer-Tropsch (FT) distillates and first generation biodiesel are alternative fuels that can both be used directly as neat fuels in an internal combustion diesel engine or as blend stocks with conventional diesel fuel. Biodiesel is generally produced by the catalytic trans-esterification of triglycerides (vegetable oil) with methanol to form fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and glycerol as a by-product. The FT process (or FT synthesis) is a catalyzed chemical reaction in which synthesis gas (syngas), a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, is converted into liquid hydrocarbons of various compositions. The oxidation and thermal stability of diesel fuel are very important properties since unstable diesel fuels can form soluble gums and or insoluble organic particulates that can clog the fuel filters and fuels system components. In the quest for increased efficiency of internal combustion compression ignition engines, the engines are increasingly downsized and turbo charged. These developments, together with the latest demands from modern injector systems, place a greater demand on the oxidative and thermal stability performance of a fuel due to the exposure of fuels to higher temperatures in comparison to historic engine and injector designs. Recirculation of heated fuel can also cause injector deposits originating from either gum or particulate formation. Biodiesel (FAME) and FT diesel have shown to be fully compatible as blend components with conventional crude derived diesel. FT diesel, produced from the low temperature FT (LTFT) process, generally has a lower density and viscosity and good cold flow properties. It is also a very stable fuel, which compensates for the high viscosity and density, poor cold flow properties, and unstable nature associated with biodiesel (FAME). This paper discusses the results obtained from a comparative study of the oxidation stability (using the Rancimat methodology) of FT (high temperature FT and LTFT) and petroleum diesel fuels, blended with up to 20 vol % of soya and rapeseed derived biodiesel (FAME).

This research was carried out in the framework of the project: "A system for the continuous control of the degree and rate of the liquid fuels ageing process during storage, which received co-funding from the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Programme "Innovative Economy". The book presents an evaluation of the impact of fuel production processes on its stability and an analysis of changes in normative parameters of fuels during their storage and use. The book presents also the results of tests on the corrosive effects of fuels during storage processes. This project was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Programme "Innovative Economy".

Book excerpt: In support of the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) Fuels Technologies Program Multiyear Program Plan Goal of identifying fuels that can displace 5% of petroleum diesel by 2010, the Nat. Renewable Energy Lab. (NREL), in collaboration with the Nat. Biodiesel Board (NBB) and with subcontractor Southwest Research Institute, performed a study of biodiesel oxidation stability. The objective of this work was to develop a database to support specific proposals for a stability test and specification for biodiesel and biodiesel blends. B100 samples from 19 biodiesel producers were obtained during Dec. 2005 and Jan. 2006 and tested for stability. Eight of these samples were then selected for additional study, including long-term storage tests and blending at 5% and 20% with a number of ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuels. These blends were also tested for stability. The study employed accelerated tests as well as tests intended to simulate three real-world aging scenarios: (1) storage and handling, (2) vehicle fuel tank, and (3) high-temperature engine fuel system. Results were analyzed to determine whether ensuring B100 stability was adequate to ensure the stability of B5 and B20 blends. Several tests were also performed with two commercial antioxidant additives to determine whether these additives might improve stability. This report documents completion of the NREL Fiscal Year 2007 Annual Operating Plan Milestone 10.1. Illus.

Book excerpt: Internal combustion engines have remained a challenge due to depending heavily on fossil fuels, which are already limited reserves, and a requirement for improvement in emission levels continuously. The number of advanced technologies such as hybrid systems and low-temperature combustion engines has been introduced, and a number of reports about the use of alternative fuels have been presented in recent years to overcome these challenges. The efforts have made the new concepts to be used in practical along with the new problems which are required advanced control systems. This book presents studies on internal combustion engines with alternative fuels and advanced combustion technologies to obtain efficiency and environment-friendly systems, measurement methodology of exhaust emissions and modelling of a hybrid engine system, and mechanical losses arising from ring-cylinder and ring-groove side contacts as well. The main theme here is to identify solutions for internal combustion engines in terms of fuel consumption, emissions, and performance.

Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to define the feasibility for using the Jet Fuel Thermal Oxidation Tester (JFTOT) as a laboratory predictor to assess diesel fuel quality relative to operating performance. A methodology was subsequently established to define diesel fuel performance relative to filter pressure differentials at limiting operating temperatures. A variety of diesel fuels and candidate additives were screened using this approach. The modified JFTOT did effectively screen and discriminate between the fuels as a result of their composition, hydrocarbon quality, and possible contaminants. (Author).
