This book was released on 1971 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The isothermal decompositions of Composition B and TNT were probed in the presence of a variety of materials under consideration for employment in ordnance as cavity liners or sealants. These materials included products of Essex Chemical Corp.; H.H. Robertson Co. (Tuffseal); Unique Products, Inc.; Insulation Systems Inc.; Thermal Systems, Inc.; Thiokol Chemical Corp.; and United Resin Products, Inc. The kinetic features of the reactions were established over wide temperature ranges, including conditions such that the reactions were fast and explosion imminent. In general, accelerations in the decomposition rates were observed. In a few cases these accelerations were extreme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some new experiments designed to accurately determine the time interval required to produce a reactive event in confined explosives subjected to temperatures which will cause decomposition are described. Geometry and boundary conditions were both well defined so that these experiments on the rapid thermal decomposition of HE are amenable to predictive modelling. Experiments have been carried out on TNT, TATB and on two plastic-bonded HMX-based high explosives, LX-04 and LX-10. When the results of these experiments are plotted as the logarithm of the time to explosion versus 1/T K (Arrhenius plot), the curves produced are remarkably linear. This is in contradiction to the results obtained by an iterative solution of the Laplace equation for a system with a first order rate heat source. Such calculations produce plots which display considerable curvature. The experiments have also shown that the time to explosion is strongly influenced by the void volume in the containment vessel. Results of the experiments with calculations based on the heat flow equations coupled with first-order models of chemical decomposition are compared. The comparisons demonstrate the need for a more realistic reaction model.
Book Synopsis Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods by : United Nations
Download or read book Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods written by United Nations and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manual of Tests and Criteria contains criteria, test methods and procedures to be used for classification of dangerous goods according to the provisions of Parts 2 and 3 of the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Model Regulations, as well as of chemicals presenting physical hazards according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). As a consequence, it supplements also national or international regulations which are derived from the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods or the GHS. At its ninth session (7 December 2018), the Committee adopted a set of amendments to the sixth revised edition of the Manual as amended by Amendment 1. This seventh revised edition takes account of these amendments. In addition, noting that the work to facilitate the use of the Manual in the context of the GHS had been completed, the Committee considered that the reference to the "Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods" in the title of the Manual was no longer appropriate, and decided that from now on, the Manual should be entitled "Manual of Tests and Criteria".
Book Synopsis Thermal Response of Explosives Subjected to External Heating. [TNT, Comp. B, HMX, TATB, DATB, and NQ]. by :
Download or read book Thermal Response of Explosives Subjected to External Heating. [TNT, Comp. B, HMX, TATB, DATB, and NQ]. written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of unconfined one-dimensional heating experiments in slab geometry was conducted with TNT, Comp. B, plastic-bonded HMX, TATB, DATB, and NQ. The explosive samples were heated on one surface at heating rates between 10 and 25/sup 0/C/min. The experimentaly determined times and temperatures to ignition were reproduced computationally, with one exception, by solving a one-dimensional heat-conduction equation containing a zero-order reaction energy source term and a time-dependent temperature boundary condition. The one exception was plastic-bonded NQ. Unconfined plastic-bonded NQ did not ignite under the experimental conditions used. The heat-transfer mechanism in molten TNT, as expected, was convective; and for molten Comp. B, conductive. A reactive heat-transfer program, EXPLO, was written that is capable of solving the convective transfer mode and accepting mixtures of explosives reacting with first-order kinetics.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much attention in the book is given to experimental works of the recent period conducted under conditions which allow using results of an experiment as material for the creation of a theory and its check. The first chapter is devoted to the general characteristic of basic forms of chemical conversion of explosives and to main types of explosives with respect to composition, chemical structure and capability of stable combustion, and also to detonation. The second chapter examines the slow chemical conversion of explosives under the effect of increased temperature. The third chapter discusses experimental data on the stable combustion of explosives. Basic theories of combustion are examined, a correlation of experimental data with conclusions is produced in reference to various types of explosives (volatile, non-volatile and quick-burning). An account of the theory of the stability of combustion is given in the fifth chapter. Chapter six examines specific cases of the detonation and combustion of explosives in various conditions (intense heating, effect of light and others). (Author).
Book Synopsis Thermal Decomposition of Explosives Below the Melting Point USSR. by : V. Kondratʹyev
Download or read book Thermal Decomposition of Explosives Below the Melting Point USSR. written by V. Kondratʹyev and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon investigation of the thermal decomposition of tetryl below the melting point Farmer showed that the condensed products of the decomposition reaction of tetryl dissolve it. Then Hinshelwood developed a mathematical analysis for a decomposition reaction taking into account the appearance of a liquid phase in the process of decomposition. However, in deriving the equation. Hinshelwood made assumptions which mutually excluded one another. Thus, calculating the ratio of the solid and the liquid phases in the decomposition process, he assumed (according to Recult's law) that at constant temperature the concentrations of material in the liquid phase, being in equilibrium with the solid phase, are constant. Also, calculating the concentration of catalyst in the liquid phase.

Book Synopsis THRESHOLD STUDIES ON TNT, COMPOSITION B, C-4, AND ANFO EXPLOSIVES USING THE STEVEN IMPACT TEST. by : F. Garcia
Download or read book THRESHOLD STUDIES ON TNT, COMPOSITION B, C-4, AND ANFO EXPLOSIVES USING THE STEVEN IMPACT TEST. written by F. Garcia and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Impact Tests were performed at low velocity on the explosives TNT (trinitrotolulene), Composition B (63% RDX, 36% TNT, and 1% wax by weight), C-4 (91% RDX, 5.3% Di (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, 2.1% Polyisobutylene, and 1.6% motor oil by weight) and ANFO (94% ammonium Nitrate with 6% Fuel Oil) in attempts to obtain a threshold for reaction. A 76 mm helium driven gas gun was used to accelerate the Steven Test projectiles up to approximately 200 m/s in attempts to react (ignite) the explosive samples. Blast overpressure gauges, acoustic microphones, standard video and high-speed photography were used to characterize the level of any high explosive reaction violence. No bulk reactions were observed in the TNT, Composition B, C-4 or ANFO explosive samples impacted up to velocities in the range of 190-200 m/s. This work will outline the experimental details and discuss the lack of reaction when compared to the reaction thresholds of other common explosives. These results will also be compared to that of the Susan Test and reaction thresholds observed in the common small-scale safety tests such as the drop hammer and friction tests in hopes of drawing a correlation.

Book Synopsis Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has a stockpile of approximately 400,000 tons of excess, obsolete, or unserviceable munitions. About 60,000 tons are added to the stockpile each year. Munitions include projectiles, bombs, rockets, landmines, and missiles. Open burning/open detonation (OB/OD) of these munitions has been a common disposal practice for decades, although it has decreased significantly since 2011. OB/OD is relatively quick, procedurally straightforward, and inexpensive. However, the downside of OB and OD is that they release contaminants from the operation directly into the environment. Over time, a number of technology alternatives to OB/OD have become available and more are in research and development. Alternative technologies generally involve some type of contained destruction of the energetic materials, including contained burning or contained detonation as well as contained methods that forego combustion or detonation. Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions reviews the current conventional munitions demilitarization stockpile and analyzes existing and emerging disposal, treatment, and reuse technologies. This report identifies and evaluates any barriers to full-scale deployment of alternatives to OB/OD or non-closed loop incineration/combustion, and provides recommendations to overcome such barriers.

Book excerpt: Besides its obvious destructive potential, military R&D also serves to protect human lives, equipment and facilities against the effects of weapons. Concepts have therefore been developed that improve safety of stationary and mobile facilities against pressure waves, thermal radiation and fire. Effective, fast fire extinguishing equipment has been designed for tank compartments and motors. Closed buildings are demolished and landmines are removed with gas and dust explosions. Stringent safety requirements have been developed for the production of ammunition and explosives. Military and related industries have accumulated a vast knowledge and sophisticated experience that are very valuable in a variety of civil applications. The knowledge is based on theoretical and experimental research work, the origin of which sometimes dates back many centuries. It has often been classified and therefore has remained unknown to the civilian population, until now.
