Book Synopsis Defining Moments by : William L. Self
Download or read book Defining Moments written by William L. Self and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament readings in the lectionary are often neglected during the Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany seasons in favor of the more direct and easier-to-preach New Testament passages. William Self brings his creative imagination to these scriptural passages and gives them new life for the preacher. The sermons of this veteran preacher are written with the pew in mind. They are for people who hurt, for people who wait, for people who face defining moments, and for churches that struggle to proclaim the Gospel. Amply illustrated from life and literature, these sermons can be read for inspiration by lay persons and clergy alike. William L. Self has a national reputation as a gifted preacher, pastor, author, lecturer, motivational speaker for corporate America, and innovator in church growth. He achieved considerable acclaim during his 26-year pastorate at the Wieuca Road Baptist Church in Atlanta. His leadership and substantial influence have brought Johns Creek Baptist Church in Alpharetta, Georgia, a burgeoning suburb north of Atlanta, to the vanguard of fast-growing congregations. Dr. Self is a graduate of Stetson University, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (B.D.), and Candler School of Theology (S.T.D.). He has received honorary degrees from Stetson University, Mercer University, and Han Yang University in Seoul, Korea. The McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University has established the William L. Self Preaching Lectureship in his honor.

Book Synopsis The Civil War Trilogy 3-Book Boxset (Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels, and The Last Full Measure) by : Jeff Shaara
Download or read book The Civil War Trilogy 3-Book Boxset (Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels, and The Last Full Measure) written by Jeff Shaara and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2012-04-09 with total page 1166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Shaara reinvented the war novel with his Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece of Gettysburg, The Killer Angels. Jeff Shaara continued his father’s legacy with a series of centuries-spanning New York Times bestsellers. Together at last in eBook form, this volume assembles three Civil War novels from America’s first family of military fiction: Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels, and The Last Full Measure. Gods and Generals traces the lives, passions, and careers of the great military leaders—Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Winfield Scott Hancock, Joshua Chamberlain—from the gathering clouds of war. The Killer Angels re-creates the fight for America’s destiny in the Battle of Gettysburg, the four most bloody and courageous days of our nation’s history. And The Last Full Measure brings to life the final two years of the Civil War, chasing the escalating conflict between Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant—complicated, heroic, and deeply troubled men—through to its riveting conclusion at Appomattox. Contains a preview Jeff Shaara’s new novel of the Civil War, A Blaze of Glory. Praise for Michael Shaara and Jeff Shaara’s Civil War trilogy “Brilliant does not even begin to describe the Shaara gift.”—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution “Shaara’s beautifully sensitive novel delves deeply in the empathetic realm of psycho-history, where enemies do not exist—just mortal men forced to make crucial decisions and survive on the same battlefield.”—San Francisco Chronicle, on Gods and Generals “Remarkable . . . a book that changed my life . . . I had never visited Gettysburg, knew almost nothing about that battle before I read the book, but here it all came alive.”—Ken Burns, on The Killer Angels “The Last Full Measure is more than another historical novel. It is rooted in history, but its strength is the element of humanity flowing through its characters. . . . The book is compelling, easy to read, well researched and written, and thought-provoking. . . . In short, it is everything that a reader could ask for.”—Chicago Tribune

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tragedy is timeless and universal. So is victory, which is defined by the author’s life as letting God have the controls – allowing him to expose previously hidden beauty, now displayed for the sake of others. This inspiring life story has moved countless others to overcome and look at adversity from God’s perspective. When viewed from the top, a valley is precious and beautiful. Valetta lost her young son Danny to leukemia; her husband Henry succumbed to Hodgkin’s disease a few years later; then she lost her remaining two children in a tragic car accident. Her new reality was nearly unbearable, but when offered a secure position in her father’s business, Valetta refused. The Lord had called her and Henry into ministry, and there was a mountain of unfinished business. Today, Valetta has traveled the world, sharing Christ and teaching Christians how to share Christ in their communities. Thousands have been saved, and countless more inspired in their walk with the Lord. Valetta’s story will touch you, move you, and challenge you to let God do as he desires in and through your life, enabling you to minister to others in ways you never would have imagined possible.

Book Synopsis Between Here and There by : Daniel Morales (History teacher)
Download or read book Between Here and There written by Daniel Morales (History teacher) and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Between Here and There is the first history of the creation of modern US-Mexico migration patterns narrated from multiple geographic and institutional sites. This book analyzes the interplay between the US and Mexican governments, civic organizations, and migrants on both sides of the border and offers a revisionist and comprehensive view of Mexican migration as it was established in the early twentieth century and reproduced throughout the century as a socioeconomic system that reached from Texas borderlands to western agricultural regions like California as well as to Midwestern farming and industrial areas. The book illustrates how large-scale migration became entrenched in the socioeconomic fabric of the United States and Mexico. Mexican migration operates through an interconnected transnational migrant economy made up of self-reinforcing local economic logics, information diffusion, and locally based transnational social networks. From central Mexico, the book expands across the United States and back to Mexico to show how the migrant economy spread and reacted to the political and economic crisis in the 1930s. In the 1930s, migrants fought for recognition in both societies. Those who returned to Mexico used an expansive vision to lay claim to citizenship and land there. Those who stayed in the United States joined efforts to lay claim to better pay, working conditions, and rights from the New Deal state, creating a base for later organizing. These dynamics shaped the establishment of the Bracero Program that brought in more than four million workers and has continued to frame large-scale Mexican migration until today"--
