Book Synopsis Everything Is Going to Be K.O. by : Kaiya Stone
Download or read book Everything Is Going to Be K.O. written by Kaiya Stone and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hilarious and heartfelt illustrated memoir of living with specific learning difficulties. In Everything is Going to be K.O., Kaiya Stone writes about her experiences of living with specific learning difficulties: from struggling at school, to being diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia at university, and performing her own one-woman stand up show inspired by her journey. Always funny and unfailingly honest, Kaiya not only outlines the frustrations of having SpLDs, but also the ways in which they have fuelled her creativity. She calls for neurodiversity to be celebrated so that instead of questioning how we are 'supposed' to think, we instead take pride in our cognitive differences. Everything is Going to be K.O. is for anyone who knows, or has wondered, what it is like to live with learning difficulties today.
Book Synopsis A Dictionary of Classical Greek Quotations by : Marinos Yeroulanos
Download or read book A Dictionary of Classical Greek Quotations written by Marinos Yeroulanos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 918 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Human wisdom is of little or no value', wrote Plato in his Apology. And yet the ancient Greeks, including Plato himself, more than any other people of antiquity were fascinated by the pursuit of the wisdom they called philosophia. That search for knowledge involved an extensive use of maxims and quotations, as we can see from those expressions of Homer prefaced by the phrase 'as people say'. Homer, the Seven Sages and the Pre-Socratic philosophers are still extensively quoted in all the major western languages. Yet for all their popularity, until now there has been no single resource to which interested readers might turn. This unique reference book offers one of the most comprehensive selections of Greek quotations ever committed to print. With its English text matched by the original Greek, the volume collects 7500 entries, ranging from the archaic period to late antiquity, and across philosophy, drama, poetry, history, science and medicine, each indexed with key words to enable fast sourcing. Together, these selections provide an incomparable insight into the glories of Greek civilization.
Book Synopsis No Place Like Murder by : Janis Thornton
Download or read book No Place Like Murder written by Janis Thornton and published by Quarry Books. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern retelling of 20 sensational true crimes, No Place Like Murder reveals the inside details behind nefarious acts that shocked the Midwest between 1869 and 1950. The stories chronicle the misdeeds, examining the perpetrators' mindsets, motives, lives, apprehensions, and trials, as well as what became of them long after. True crime author Janis Thornton profiles notorious murderers such as Frankie Miller, who was fed up when her fiancé stood her up for another woman. As fans of the song "Frankie and Johnny" already know, Frankie met her former lover at the door with a shotgun. Thornton's tales reveal the darker side of life in the Midwest, including the account of Isabelle Messmer, a plucky young woman who dreamed of escaping her quiet farm-town life. After she nearly took down two tough Pittsburgh policemen in 1933, she was dubbed "Gun Girl" and went on to make headlines from coast to coast. In 1942, however, after a murder conviction in Texas, she vowed to do her time and go straight. Full of intrigue and revelations, No Place Like Murder also features such folks as Chirka and Rasico, the first two Hoosier men to die in the electric chair after they brutally murdered their wives in 1913. The two didn't meet until their fateful last night. An enthralling and chilling collection, No Place Like Murder is sure to thrill true crime lovers.

Book Synopsis Russian-English Dictionary of Proverbs and Sayings by : Alexander Margulis
Download or read book Russian-English Dictionary of Proverbs and Sayings written by Alexander Margulis and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary contains 2,375 Russian sayings and proverbs and their English counterparts. Variants of each saying are included, and careful attention is given to the differences in British and American versions. For example, the Russian saying that is interpreted as "Children behave in a childish way, and they cannot be expected to act like grown-up people," is first given in Russian (in the Cyrillic alphabet) and then in English, and is then followed by the nearest English-language equivalent sayings in Britain and the United States: "Young colts will canter" (British) and "Boys will be boys" (American). The proverbs and sayings are arranged alphabetically by the first Russian word (in the Cyrillic alphabet) and are cross-referenced so the reader can find analogous Russian versions of English sayings. There is a keyword index for each language (one in English, one in Russian in the Cyrillic alphabet), which allows the reader to find a proverb or a saying without knowing the first word. Proverbs and sayings are current and include those popular in both spoken Russian and literature. The prefatory matter is in both English and Russian, for readers who have a command of either language.

Book Synopsis Homer and the Artists by : Anthony Snodgrass
Download or read book Homer and the Artists written by Anthony Snodgrass and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-22 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about Homer, myth and art. The Iliad and Odyssey so dominate our view of ancient Greece that our natural reaction on viewing certain works of early Greek art is to identify them as 'scenes from Homer'. However, Anthony Snodgrass argues that, so far from 'illustrating' the Homeric poems, these works very rarely show signs of acquaintance with the Iliad or Odyssey, seldom even choosing their subject-matter from them. When the subjects do overlap, the artists occasionally give positive signs of preferring a non-Homeric version of the episode. He then attempts to explain why this should be so: despite Homer's unique standing in antiquity, the artists inhabited an independent world, where their own inspirations and concerns dominated their production. It is only the traditional dominance of the literary study of antiquity which has hidden this from us.
