Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Havana in December to 1958 was city on the brink of revolution, but it glittered on the surface. Over the previous twenty-five years it had become the Las Vegas of the Caribbean, made so by the Mafia money that supported a corrupt and oppressive regime. Into this explosive environment came Lila Corona and her gang of jewel thieves, determined to make the greatest heist ever. She had been hired by a jewelry company to steal their own jewels and smuggle them out of the country. She encountered Chester Yellowcat, an FBI agent who had met her before, knew that she was a thief, but had never been able to prove anything. Lila spotted him tailing her, confronted him, and started a relationship with him. As the head of the FBI section at the American embassy, Chester was involved with the ambassador in finding a way to get Batista, the Mafia-supported dictator, to leave the country. To get information to pressure Batista, Chester was obliged to hire Lila and her gang to break into the National Bank to photograph information about the location of Batista’s overseas financial holdings. Lila did, and this led to her becoming Chester’s lover. Because the jewelry heist involved far more jewels than she had expected, Lila was obliged to make a deal with one of the leaders of the revolution to use his resources to smuggle the jewels to Miami. Lila and her gang left the country after the heist. Chester wanted her to go, because he was afraid to have her there during the revolutionary takeover, which he knew was coming soon. The takeover came on the morning of the New Year, when Batista, the dictator, fled the country. After a brief period of tension, Chester and the other Americans at the embassy began sorting things out. By early spring, Chester was retired and staying at a hotel at Sarasota, on the Gulf Coast of Florida. He had asked a waiter to bring him a beer. When the waiter brought him two beers, he turned around to say something to the waiter, but discovered instead—Lila.

Book excerpt: This is the story of Oriannon, a very human-looking girl with an extraordinary gift: the ability to record what she sees and experiences like the hard drive of a computer. When the mysterious Jesmet, thought to be a Magician in the Old Order, begins to connect with Oriannon, he is banished to Corista’s Shadowside. On another planet, the new faith of its first Believers is tested in the shadow of evilIn book two, readers can contemplate how biblical truths translate in another world. The planet of Corista has been thrown off its axis, and the bright side has been plunged into perpetual darkness. Are the Owling people of Shadowside to blame? With both sides of the planet in chaos, the world becomes even more confusing for 15-year-old Oriannon when her former music mentor Jesmet miraculously returns from the dead and promises his followers a special power called the Wind. But his is not the only offer of hope. Sola, Corista’s charismatic head of Security, proposes the “ultimate solution” for peace, and she recruits Oriannon to help her carry out a seemingly perfect plan. But Oriannon’s closest friends are skeptical and try to convince her that the plan involves evil acts against the Owling. Should Oriannon trust the feelings of her friends? Will she embrace Sola’s solution as the answer to the world’s dilemma? Or will she believe the promise of an Owling holy man before she can no longer discern between light and darkness?

Book excerpt: “[An] epic novel of lunar conquest” from the New York Times–bestselling and six-time Hugo Award–winning author of Mars (Orlando Sentinel). In the twenty-first century, the world is on the brink of a scientific renaissance, about to birth a future where space has become privatized and the moon transforms into a fertile commercial ground. As former astronaut Paul Stavenger works to turn a handful of abandoned government moon shelters into a full-fledged moonbase, powerful corporate lobbies align against him. Against the neo-Luddites is Masterson Aerospace, a company funding and creating major scientific breakthroughs. But Masterson is nearly crippled when its CEO commits suicide and his wife, Joanna, backs her lover Paul Stavenger, the former astronaut, over her mentally unbalanced son Greg in the board election that follows her husband’s death. So begins a power struggle that leads to murder and the ultimate conflict over Moonbase. “Ben Bova is trying to make us grow up . . . There’s certainly enough techie ornamentation, both in theory and in plausible practice, to satisfy the pocket-protector crowd, but there’s also more, and better developed, conflict among characters than many folks would expect.” —The San Diego Union-Tribune

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the 19th-century Boer Republic of Transvaal, Southern Africa, the Boer Dirk van Zyl leads his band of vagabonds in raids on African villages, capturing children to be traded for cattle and sold into labour on the Boer farms. A missionary, Albert Nachtigal, strives to save his mission station from losing Christian converts to a successful African preacher. A notorious thief, Msuthu, acting undercover as bodyguard to an African king, is the secret middleman in trading children between the vagabonds and corrupt officials of the Boer republican government. Albert Nachtigal abhors the trade but, in his efforts to thwart the success of the African preacher, the politically naïve missionary falls under the spell of power-hungry Boer politicians seeking to expand the trade, inadvertently leading the republic into war. Of Vagabonds, Missionaries and Thieves is a startling novel about two African kingdoms, a fledgling Boer republic and a war that brings about the beginning of the end of the shocking child trade in Southern Africa during the 19th century. Set against the background of the rolling savannah and grasslands of the African Highveld, the author lucidly captures the characters as they fall foul of each other in this tale of greed, corruption and hunger for power. Douglas Hawkins was born in Germiston, South Africa, where he lives today. Shortly after he was born, the family moved to the Kingdom of Swaziland (today Eswatini) where he spent his formative childhood years before returning to South Africa. Following his retirement from the corporate world, he has pursued his passion for the multifaceted histories and cultures of the people of South Africa, and the wide diversity of the country’s fauna and flora, geology and geography. He is a qualified Field Guide and a South African National Guide in history and culture. He has travelled extensively around South Africa, western Zimbabwe, southern Zambia and northern Botswana. His writings have focused especially on the 19th century Anglo-Zulu and Boer-Pedi battlefields, narrated from the viewpoint of the Zulu and Pedi nations. Of Vagabonds Missionaries and Thieves is the author’s second novel. His first book, My Brother’s Keeper (second edition published in 2014) is a factually and culturally accurate portrayal of the first month of the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879, written solely from the Zulu standpoint.
