Book excerpt: Tricia and her brother, Shaun Morrissey, recovering from the tragic loss of their parents in an auto accident a couple of years earlier, undergo a period of turmoil in their previously placid lives in London. The turmoil is initiated by Tricia’s trip to the Himalayan mountain region in India, specifically to the mountain top temple of Kedarnath, at an elevation of 12,000 feet, where she suffered an event of memory lapse, possibly caused by inhalation of cannabis. Having returned to London and submitted herself to counseling by her psychotherapist, she is contacted by the newlyweds, Kris and Susan Hamsun, from Washington DC, claiming to know both—what caused the event and the way to emerge from it. Having convinced both Tricia and her skeptical brother, Shaun, as to the veracity of his claim, Kris, assisted by his Norwegian buddy, Jurgen, and other associates from his own treasure-hunting adventure, train and assist the duo in the successful recovery of the treasure. Post the successful task completion, Tricia is then advised to seek out the remaining 6 companions and similarly assist them in executing their treasure recovery task. While undertaking this transformation, Tricia makes her first contact with one companion, based on guidance received from the Dalai Lama and a Buddhist sage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No, that diminutive but independent vocable, begins its great role early in human life and never loses it. For not only can it head a negative sentence, announcing its judgement, or answer a question, implying its negated content, it can, and mostly does, in the beginning of speech, express an assertion of the resistant will--sometimes just that and nothing more. The adult antiphony to the toddler's incessant no is another no, that of preventive command, and the great commandments of later life continue to be prohibitions: Nine of the Ten Commandments are in the negative. Eva Brann explores nothingness in the third book of her trilogy, which has treated imagination, time and now naysaying. If we want to understand something of imagination, memory and time, she argues, we must mount an inquiry into what it means to say something is not what it claims to be or is not there or is nonexistent or is affected by Nonbeing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memphis is built on land once the bottom of a sea, Nashville rests within a 600-foot-depth basin eroded from a mighty arch, Knoxville and Chattanooga nestle on lands that have migrates - Knoxville's underpinning traveling all the way from the middle of Sevier County. Our Restless Earth is written for all Tennesseans who are curios about the origins of familiar landscapes. Edward T. Luther describes a state that has attracted specialists from all over the world to study its fascinating geology, a state that in its long east-west axis encompasses nine distinct geologic regions. Appearing here are phenomena such as the New Madrid earthquake that formed Reelfoot lake, the state's almost forgotten gold rush, 60-foot reptiles that once inhabited parts of McNairy County, and the contrary Tennessee River that could not decide which way to flow. The origins of the state's oil, coal, iron, marble, and famous cave country - these too are a part of Our Restless Earth. Edward T. Luther is a native Tennessean whose professional career as a geologist and personal interest in writing have pointed him toward the preparation of this book. Since receiving his advanced degree in geology from Vanderbilt University in 1951, he has come to know that state intimately - first as a team member of the Tennessee Geological Survey and more recently as supervisor of the Survey's research program. He is also an avid reader of fiction and has long been interested in applying writing skills to his technical knowledge in order to make the fascinating science of the earth available to a wider audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tyrannosaurus rex is everyone’s favorite dinosaur, and in death it plays a central role in this book. But this work is about the voyage through college by eleven students, including their adventures out West with an inspirational Professor Goodspeed, nicknamed “Speedy.” Dubbing themselves “The Mélange,” a group of friends discover a T. rex skull that was stolen, triggering a scandal of international proportions. A mini-reunion for the Mélange is arranged, hoping that a fracas prior to graduation that scattered them will have faded from memories. It has, and the event is a great success. We learn about the Mélangers’ lives since graduation, and there are some surprises. T. rex, Darwin, and Adventures Out West includes aspects of science accessible to nonscientists, sprinkled with fascinating aspects of natural science in order to educate the reader about earth history and evolution. In the process, readers learn how to defend evolution against creationists. About the Author Steven M. Stanley is a paleontologist with an A.B. from Princeton, summa cum laude, and a Ph.D. from Yale. He was on the faculty of Johns Hopkins for many years and the University of Hawaii for a few. He is now a part-time research professor at Florida State University and a research associate at the Smithsonian Institution. Steven has written textbooks and trade books about science. He’s been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and has received many medals and other honors. During the past thirty years, Steven has been the only paleontologist to have received the Penrose Medal, the Geological Society of America’s highest award, "for eminence in pure research." He’s also an amateur landscape architect, building patios and planting trees, shrubs, and perennials, and he has a wonderful daughter, adopted in Russia.

Why a reclusive mountain man knew how to secure a perimeter and soothe a woman’s fears was a mystery Sara swore to solve once she and her daughter were safe. The past he’d thought buried should have kept him away from a woman and child in danger. But when Nat held a shaken Sara in his arms, he knew his own worst nightmare had returned. He could no more refuse to protect them than he could deny that he and Sara would be lovers. Not with evil poised to strike…just before dawn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most everyone who comes to western North Carolina has heard of the Nantahala, but few know its history. Long before it was a mecca for rafters and thrill seekers, it was traveled by naturalists and explorers from William Bartram to John C. Frémont. After the Cherokees were driven out, settlers arrived and began exporting the wealth of the mountains in the form of timber, talc and minerals. Tourists arrived on the Western Turnpike soon after, and the railroad brought more around 1890. The federal government began purchasing land for the new Nantahala National Forest, and the need for aluminum to fight World War II precipitated the construction of Fontana Lake and Nantahala Lake. Local author Lance Holland has crafted an enlightening and entertaining narrative history of this unique region.

Book excerpt: Grace's husband was a heroic Atlanta police officer who died while stopping a terrorist attack. Now a bombastic Hollywood action star is filming the story against Grace's wishes, complete with bad dialogue, dumb action scenes and absolutely no understanding of the troubled, yet decent, man, her husband was. When Grace starts battling the star she runs afoul of his handsome ex-con bodyguard, Boone Nolene, who has enough patchy history to give most women the shivers. But Boone is a good guy just trying to do his job while falling in love with Grace. Big fun romantic fiction from NYT bestseller Deborah Smith.
