Book excerpt: Popular Atlanta Braves catcher Javier “Javy” Lopez opens up in this autobiography to tell his amazing story, from learning to play baseball on a neighborhood basketball court to his record of 42 home runs in a season by a catcher. The product of a lower-middle-class background in Puerto Rico, Javy had to overcome numerous hardships—not the least of which was a language barrier—to fulfill his destiny as one of the most accomplished catchers of the modern era. He tells of bumps along the way to success, including why he overstated his signing bonus as well as the time in the minors when he cried during an all-night meltdown due to his struggles on the field. But he went on to be named MVP of the 1996 National League Championship Series, and played on 12 of the Atlanta Braves' unprecedented 14 straight division-winning teams of the 1990s and 2000s. From his relationship with great teammates such as Greg Maddux and John Smoltz, to his failed comeback attempt with the Braves in 2008, this autobiography tells all about the handsome, warm, engaging Lopez and how he became one of baseball's most popular players.

Book excerpt: “Five Stars...The fourth and final installment of the Tipsy Collins series...beautifully wraps up the characters’ journeys with a blend of paranormal intrigue and life lessons…” —Readers’ Favorite Things have been going great for Tipsy Collins, the Lowcountry’s favorite clairvoyant artistic genius. Her kids are happy and healthy, she’s producing and selling her celebrated paintings, and she’s engaged to the love of her life, psychiatrist Scott Brandt. Everyone in Tipsy’s life seems content, except Henry Mott, her mercurial supernatural roommate and wannabe literary virtuoso. Henry has been brooding for over a century, but lately, his discontent has gone into overdrive. His famous temper is out of control and he can’t write a single sentence. Henry’s malaise and its accompanying destruction threaten to complicate Tipsy and Scott’s family blending while her ex-husband haplessly navigates a second marriage crisis. As Henry slowly loses his mind, a series of unexplainable events has Tipsy combing through ghostly memories, meeting new friends and reuniting with old ones, exploring and testing the supernatural limits, and, as always, learning some priceless life lessons. True Indigo is the highly anticipated fourth and final installment in the award-winning Tipsy Collins Series.

Book excerpt: This book is an anthology of spoken narratives collected from male-to-female transgendered people who live on the island of O‘ahu. In this book, people who identify as “mahu” (the local term for a transgendered person), transsexual, and/or drag queen tell their stories and address the issues important in their lives. They talk about gender identity and sexuality; coming out to their families; familial acceptance and rejection; going to school; surviving on the streets; transitioning to womanhood; finding a romantic partner; spirituality and religion; Hawaiian culture; growing old, and much more. The transgender communities on O‘ahu are extensive and rich with diversity. Nevertheless, the general public typically views transgendered people in one-dimensional, stereotypical terms, often as prostitutes or sexual deviants. This collection will increase the visibility of transgenderism, and educate readers by giving transgendered people the opportunity to speak for themselves. Its contributors are of a variety of ages, and backgrounds. Not only do the powerfully moving narratives in ‘‘O Au No Keia reveal what it is like to be transgendered, they also illuminate what this means in the unique cultural context of Hawai‘i. On the one hand, this state has the reputation of being extremely accepting of those who are transgendered, as well as of those who are gay and lesbian. Indeed, it is reported that transgenderism and bisexuality were accepted in traditional Hawaiian society. On the other hand, much of Hawai‘i’s population is devoutly Christian, and the gay marriage bill was decisively defeated in 1999. Through their stories, the contributors — some of whom were born and raised here in Hawai'i, and some of whom came to O‘ahu later in life — reflect on the intersection between tolerant native Hawaiian values and condemning Western ones, and how that has affected their lives in a place many outsiders consider “paradise.”
