Download or read book My Name Is Red written by Orhan Pamuk and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2006-12-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nobel Prize winner and one of today's most prominent contemporary Turkish writers delivers a novel that is a fiendishly devious mystery, a beguiling love story, a brilliant symposium on the power of art, and a “modern classic … rich and essential” (Los Angeles Times Book Review)—set amid the splendor and religious intrigue of sixteenth-century Istanbul. The Sultan has commissioned a cadre of the most acclaimed artists in the land to create a great book celebrating the glories of his realm. Their task: to illuminate the work in the European style. But because figurative art can be deemed an affront to Islam, this commission is a dangerous proposition indeed. The ruling elite therefore mustn’t know the full scope or nature of the project, and panic erupts when one of the chosen miniaturists disappears. The only clue to the mystery—or crime?—lies in the half-finished illuminations themselves. Part fantasy and part philosophical puzzle, My Name is Red is a kaleidoscopic journey to the intersection of art, religion, love, sex and power. Translated from the Turkish by Erda M Göknar

Book excerpt: Elephants Cry is a dialogue of crime and passion. It’s a story of a young couple’s love affair, of a pair of fumbling detectives attempting to find self-esteem, of a little girl’s love for animals, and of an emotionally disturbed and grotesque-looking woman all of whom become entangled in a cold case mystery. Detective Jack Reinhardt searches for a single piece of evidence that will bring closure to a perplexing and unsolved crime. University student and part-time zoo employee Justin Lombardi takes over the duties of trainer for Buster the elephant. Within the book, there is a definite affinity between existence in the big city and life at the zoo.

Book excerpt: Edmund Peoples, definitely an optimistic person, has just received an important assignment: to visit various lands, each famous for a particular social advance. With orders to report back to his superiors on each lands successful methods and how his country can achieve social betterment as a result, Peoples prepares to leave his girlfriend and best friend behind, and embark on his journey accompanied by two other investigating visitors: the attractive Sunni Childless and the young and ambitious Omar Hinki. As Peoples and the two other visitors agree to separate and launch solo investigations, he begins his romp through ten strange, frightening, and laughable lands where he is confronted with humorous social and non-political spoofs as well as personal struggles that eventually lead him to shed his optimistic persona and embrace pessimism. Forced to question his beliefs, trust in strangers, and face danger, Peoples manages to survive his journey and return home, only to discover he has lost everything. Now jobless, aimless, and without a purpose, Peoples must somehow find his way back to a happy life. Visit to the Circus of Fools shares a heros entertaining, satirical journey through various lands as he learns more than he ever imagined, especially about himself.

Book Synopsis Red in the Rainbow by : Lynn Carneson
Download or read book Red in the Rainbow written by Lynn Carneson and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Red in the Rainbow is a story of humanity in the face of political turmoil. Fred and Sarah Carneson were fiercely committed members of the Communist Party from the 1930s onwards. Dedicated activists in brutal times, theirs is a story of political persecution, prolonged separation and enduring love. Lynn Carneson, their daughter, candidly narrates the terror, the pain and the joy of her extraordinary life as the child of such dedicated freedom fighters, revealing how, despite endless campaigning, financial difficulty, emotional breakdown, banning, torture and imprisonment, the family managed to stay together. Based on personal recollection as well as letters, official records and newspaper articles, Lynn describes her parents’ underground work and their involvement in watershed events such as the Treason Trial and the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe. She evokes the tension of secretive operations and the family’s constant surveillance by security police, as well as the trauma of her father’s trial and prison sentence. Lynn vividly recounts their life as exiles in London and their long-awaited return to South Africa in 1991. Red in the Rainbow not only invokes Fred and Sarah’s lifelong political struggles and triumphs in gripping detail, but also tells a poignant human story of endurance, courage and the survival of a marriage against all odds.
Book Synopsis The Pygmy Hippo Story by : Phillip T. Robinson
Download or read book The Pygmy Hippo Story written by Phillip T. Robinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the pygmy hippopotamus has been designated as a flagship species of West African forests (meaning that by raising conservation efforts for a single species, an entire ecological region could benefit), very little research has been published on the animal. They are solitary, nocturnal, and highly evasive, and until recent developments in "camera trap" technology, they were considered the least-photographed large mammal species in the world. The information currently available on this endangered species is scattered, limited, redundant, and often inaccurate, and no major volume exists as a resource for those interested in the conservation effort for the species, until now. Phillip Robinson and his coauthors provide a treatment of the natural history, biology, and ecology of the pygmy hippo, along with a discussion of the rare animal's taxonomic niche and a summary of the research initiatives involving it up to this point. The authors show the ways in which the pygmy hippo has come into contact with people in West African countries, both in terms of ecological and cultural impact. This creature has been the subject of local folktales, and is treated as almost mythic in some regions. Information on issues related to captivity, breeding, and zoos is provided. The book is heavily illustrated with original photographs and anatomic drawings. The project should be of use to conservation biologists, zoologists and natural history readers, and will be the definitive single-volume account of an animal that the scientific community has designated to be ecologically significant to West Africa.
