Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some years ago we edited a general casebook on behavior therapy that was well received. However, those professors who used the book as an adjunct text in child behavior therapy courses were concerned that only 9 of the 26 chapters dealt with the clinical application of behavioral prin ciples to children. Their contention was that a specific casebook on the topic was very much warranted. In considering their comments we took a closer look at the child behavior therapy area and were struck with how diverse it was, how it had expanded, and how it had matured over the last three decades. Given this apparent gap in the literature, we decided to devote an entire casebook to both the standard and the more innovative clinical applications to the behavioral problems presented by children. The resulting book, containing 28 chapters, is divided into two parts. In the first part, in a chapter entitled "How the Field Has Moved On," we briefly trace the historical roots of child behavior therapy, detail the relationship of psychiatric diagnosis and behavioral assessment, and con sider the importance of developmental norms, psychological testing, ef forts at prevention, and behavioral medicine. The bulk of this book, of course, appears in the 27 cases presented by our respective experts. Each of the treatment cases is presented in identical format for pur poses of clarity, consistency, and comparability.

Book excerpt: About 10 years after Jake Band’s accident, an emergency room doctor told him that due to all of his post-accident accomplishments, he was one in a billion. The number of zeros increased upon every achievement. Since then, he has graduated college, gotten married, and much more. In addition to the things Band learned in rehab and in the “real world”, Being-Here also includes information he acquired from college, other survivors, and plenty of graduate school research in rehabilitation journals. Being-Here is about facing your new world and life after surviving your TBI. Nobody, outside of the circle of survivors, can possibly have a clue what your life is like now. Band explains the unique things he did to face his new world. This was not only done with the hope that it could help you face similar, but unique deficits, but Band’s purpose for writing Being-Here was to convince you not to give up, even if people, such as “rehabilitation professionals”, pre-accident “friends”, and even family members give up on you and/or your future. Being-Here is a place to go for encouragement, to hear or read some positive words, and to find some of the needed fuel for your life-long journey and discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second edition of the book that sparked the current wave of interest in schema therapy. Although schema therapy was originally developed by Jeff Young in the USA, it was not until unprecedented outcome data was published from pioneering Dutch clinical trials with BPD patients that the clinical CBT community took serious notice. Schema therapy has now become one of the most popular forms of contemporary CBT. It has parallels to the ‘third wave’ of contextual behavioural science in that it develops traditional CBT in new directions, but while contextual behavioural science priorities behavioural techniques based on acceptance and mindfulness, schema therapy is more cognitive and draws on elements of experiential learning, object relations and psychodynamic therapy in addition to traditional CBT. The first edition of this book has sold more than 3,000 copies at a steady rate of around 500 units per year since 2009.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Rebecca Lester was eleven years old—and again when she was eighteen—she almost died from anorexia nervosa. Now both a tenured professor in anthropology and a licensed social worker, she turns her ethnographic and clinical gaze to the world of eating disorders—their history, diagnosis, lived realities, treatment, and place in the American cultural imagination. Famished, the culmination of over two decades of anthropological and clinical work, as well as a lifetime of lived experience, presents a profound rethinking of eating disorders and how to treat them. Through a mix of rich cultural analysis, detailed therapeutic accounts, and raw autobiographical reflections, Famished helps make sense of why people develop eating disorders, what the process of recovery is like, and why treatments so often fail. It’s also an unsparing condemnation of the tension between profit and care in American healthcare, demonstrating how a system set up to treat a disease may, in fact, perpetuate it. Fierce and vulnerable, critical and hopeful, Famished will forever change the way you understand eating disorders and the people who suffer with them.

Book excerpt: "This text reflects the changing contexts of cognitive rehabilitation practice, increased recognition of the multitude of psychological and somatic factors that affect cognitive function, and the emergence of novel theories that inform and guide clinical practice. Chapter 1 introduces five paradigms that serve as the context for cognitive rehabilitation today. In Chapter 2, we review key cognitive functions typically affected by acquired brain damage. Chapter 3 introduces the concept of "psychological mindedness" and provides counseling frameworks and strategies that can be incorporated in cognitive rehabilitation sessions to promote client engagement and motivation. Chapter 4 provides an overview of the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System, a framework to describe and classify our treatments. Chapter 5 further builds on the Planning, Implementation, Evaluation framework. The remaining chapters apply the principles and frameworks to instruction in the use of cognitive strategies (Chapter 7) and external cognitive aids (Chapter 8), teaching discrete facts and routines (Chapter 6), and methods to support social competence after brain injury (Chapter 9). Other topics are rehabilitation in the inpatient setting (Chapter 10); a review of the current state of computer-based, drill-focused cognitive rehabilitation (Chapter 11); and cognitive rehabilitation for clients with functional cognitive symptoms (Chapter 12)"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at recently qualified psychiatrists or those looking to qualify soon, How to Succeed in Psychiatry is not a source of clinical information but a survival guide to help you through the first years practising psychiatry. This book covers the topics you won't find in standard textbooks. It deals with daily problems and practical solutions for young psychiatrists. Psychiatric training is less team based than other specialties, so there is less opportunity for learning from colleagues than one would expect: this book helps to fill that gap. The book opens with an overview of psychiatry training, describing the similarities and differences among various countries. Subsequent chapters address the opportunities for research and how to publish the results. Psychotherapy and community psychiatry each merit their own chapter on training. Next, the book guides you through the transition phase into a job, discussing opportunities in both the public and private sectors and considering how to choose the best career for you. It reviews important general considerations, such as ethics, professionalism, leadership and management, how to avoid stress and burn out, and how to liaise with other specialties. The book closes with an account of the role of psychiatry associations and continuing professional development. Written by early career psychiatrists from around the world, this book provides invaluable first-hand experience to all those wishing to embark on a career in this exciting discipline. Practical tips for young psychiatrists starting their careers on the wards or in private practice Advice on the transition phase at the end of training, career choice and job opportunities
