Hamlet There exists a fairly large number of textbooks concerned with spectrochemical analysis. Most of them deal with practical applications and instrumental factors, and provide the reader with the knowledge indispensable for conducting analyses with the help of emission spectra. Practical knowledge and experience are indeed important requisites for success fully exploiting the spectrochemical method in the field of analytical chemistry. As the method is essentially empirical, it is, in principle, a simple one, provided that we succeed in exciting all samples in an identical manner; for then, relative intensities of spectral lines can serve as the 'weights' by which to measure amounts of elements. However, creating the required constancy of excitation conditions is hampered by the very nature of the sample, whose composition profoundly influences the excitation characteristics of the light source. Therefore, spectrochemists are inevitably engaged in all the processes that determine the radiation output of the light source for a given sample. Dealing, with this ensemble of processes, that is, with 'excitation' in the widest sense, is the object of this book (cf. § 1. 1). The reader will seek in vain for enumerations of practical rules that would tell him how to tackle a particular analysis problem.

Many articles treat this method; however, there exists no modern textbook suitable for the beginner as well as the practician and theoretician. In this monograph the author intends to fill this need to present the prin ciples of x-ray fluorescence analysis and to develop a theoretical under standing of the technique. Book excerpt: These proceedings report the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "The Spectroscopy of the Excited State," held at Erice, Italy, June 9-24, 1975. This Institute was an activity of the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The Institute consisted of a series of lectures on the spectroscopic properties of materials in excited electronic states, that, starting at a fundamental level, finally reached the current level of research. In essence the course had the two-fold pur pose of organizing what was known on the subject, and updating the knowledge in the field. C1aesson who, unfortunately, were not able to come because of illness. A total of 62 participants and 7 lecturers came from the following countries: Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Venezuela. The secretaries of the course were: A. La Francesca for the administrative aspects of the meeting and P.Papagiannakopou10s for the scientific aspects of the meeting.
