This non-destructive measurement technique can identify the presence of specific defects in materials at the part-per-million level. Recent experiments by Asoka-Kumar et al. have identified two lifetime components in aged plutonium samples--a dominant lifetime component of around 182 ps and a longer lifetime component of around 350-400ps. This second component appears to increase with the age of the sample, and accounts for only about 5 percent of the total intensity in 35 year-old plutonium samples. First-principles calculations of positron lifetimes are now used extensively to guide the interpretation of positron lifetime data. At Livermore, we have developed a first-principles finite-element-based method for calculating positron lifetimes for defects in metals. This method is capable of treating system cell sizes of several thousand atoms, allowing us to model defects in plutonium ranging in size from a mono-vacancy to helium-filled bubbles of over 1 nm in diameter. In order to identify the defects that account for the observed lifetime values, we have performed positron lifetime calculations for a set of vacancies, vacancy clusters, and helium-filled vacancy clusters in delta-plutonium. The calculations produced values of 143ps for defect-free delta-Pu and 255ps for a mono-vacancy in Pu, both of which are inconsistent with the dominant experimental lifetime component of 182ps. Larger vacancy clusters have even longer lifetimes. The observed positron lifetime is significantly shorter than the calculated lifetimes for mono-vacancies and larger vacancy clusters, indicating that open vacancy clusters are not the dominant defect in the aged plutonium samples. When helium atoms are introduced into the vacancy cluster, the positron lifetime is reduced due to the increased density of electrons available for annihilation. For a mono-vacancy in Pu containing one helium atom, the calculated lifetime is 190 ps, while a di-vacancy containing two helium atoms has a positron lifetime of 205 ps. In general, increasing the helium density in a vacancy cluster or He-filled bubble reduces the positron lifetime, so that the same lifetime value can arise fi-om a range of vacancy cluster sizes with different helium densities. In order to understand the variation of positron lifetime with vacancy cluster size and helium density in the defect, we have performed over 60 positron lifetime calculations with vacancy cluster sizes ranging from 1 to 55 vacancies and helium densities ranging fi-om zero to five helium atoms per vacancy. The results indicate that the experimental lifetime of 182 ps is consistent with the theoretical value of 190 ps for a mono-vacancy with a single helium atom, but that slightly better agreement is obtained for larger clusters of 6 or more vacancies containing 2-3 helium atoms per vacancy. For larger vacancy clusters with diameters of about 3-5 nm or more, the annihilation with helium electrons dominates the positron annihilation rate; the observed lifetime of 180ps is then consistent with a helium concentration in the range of 3 to 3.5 Hehacancy, setting an upper bound on the helium concentration in the vacancy clusters. In practice, the single lifetime component is most probably associated with a family of helium-filled bubbles rather than with a specific unique defect size. The longer 350-400ps lifetime component is consistent with a relatively narrow range of defect sizes and He concentration. At zero He concentration, the lifetime values are matched by small vacancy clusters containing 6-12 vacancies. With increasing vacancy cluster size, a small amount of He is required to keep the lifetime in the 350-400 ps range, until the value saturates for larger helium bubbles of more than 50 vacancies (bubble diameter> 1.3 nm) at a helium concentration close to 1 He/vacancy. These results, taken together with the experimental data, indicate that the features observed in TEM data by Schwartz et al are not voids, but are in fact helium-filled bubbles with a helium pressure of around 2-3 helium atoms per vacancy, depending on the bubble size. This is consistent with the conclusions of recently developed models of He-bubble growth in aged plutonium.

Analysis of these equations shows that the bubble size distribution function can be approximated by a composite of: (1) the solution of partial differential equations describing the continuum limit of the theory but corrected to take into account the effects of discreteness, and (2) a local expansion about the advancing leading edge of the distribution function in size space. Both approximations contribute to the memory term in a close integrodifferential equation for the monomer concentration of single helium atoms. The present theory is compared to the numerical solution of the full kinetic model and to previous approximation of Schaldach and Wolfer involving a truncated system of moment equations.

Book excerpt: An essential issue in gallium (Ga)-stabilized fcc-phase plutonium ([delta]-Pu) is the formation of helium (He) voids and bubbles emanating from the radiolytic decay of the Pu. The rate of formation of He voids and bubbles is related to the He-defect formation energies and their associated migration barriers. The size and shape distributions of the bubbles are coupled to these critical migration processes. The values of the defect formation energies, internal pressure, and migration barriers can be estimated from atomistic calculations. Complicating this picture is the destruction of He-filled voids and bubbles by subsequent radiolytic decay events. The present study concerns the construction of the necessary potential energy surfaces for the Pu-He and He-He interactions within the modified embedded atom method (MEAM). Once fully tested, the potentials will be used to estimate the He-defect formation energies and barriers to the migration of these defects for both interstitial and substitutional He on an fcc Pu lattice. The He-He interactions are modeled from ab initio electronic structure calculations for the He2 dimer and the equilateral He, trimer. The experimental data and the electronic structure calculations on He2 agree very well. These data were fit to a Rose function fn{sub R}(x) = A P([alpha]x) exp( -[alpha]x), where P is a polynomial, x = R/R0-1, R is the bond length, and R0 is its equilibrium value. The fits are very satisfactory. Both linear (P = 1+[alpha]x, zeroth-order Rose) and rational (P = 1+[alpha]x+a3 ([alpha]x)3/(1+x) first-order Rose) polynomials in the Rose function were tried. The more flexible rational form does improve the fit, but only marginally. Only the linear form was used thereafter. The resulting MEAM potential was used to predict the behavior of the linear trimer and the fcc cold compression curve. The results are shown in Fig. 2 and appear to be satisfactory. The compression regions of the curves are of particular interest for several reasons. First, an octahedral interstitial He atom in anfcc Pu lattice with a lattice constant of 4.64 Å has a nearest Pu neighbor distance of 2.32 Å. This distance is in the compressive region of the potential energy curve. Second, the compressive region will partially determine the internal pressure of He-filled voids and bubbles. Third, the shape of the He-filled voids will be influenced by the compression region of the potential. The Pu-He interactions are also modeled from ab initio electronic structure calculations, this time only for the PuHe dimer. The lowest-energy spin state of the dimer appears to be the S=7/2 state with a 'Stuttgart small-core RECP/6-31 g' basis. Two electronic structure methods were tried which would bound the extremes of the Pu-He interaction. One was the local density approximation (LDA), which tends to overestimate binding strength. It gives a well depth of 0.08 eV and a bond length of 3.6 Å. The other used the Becke-3-Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) exchange-correlation energy functional, which tends to underestimate binding strength. It predicts no binding at any separation. For purposes of fitting to the Rose functional form, a well depth of 0.03 eV and bond length of 4.8 Å was used. The bond length exceeds the cutoff distance that will be used in future simulations to limit the maximum range of the atomic interactions and is effectively purely repulsive. Furthermore, the dimer information is sufficient to determine the painvise part of the Pu-He MEAM potential, but not the effective electron density that determines the many-body part of the potential, the embedding functions F{sub He} and F{sub Pu} in Fig. 3. The effective electron density, as well as determining which of the two dimer curves (LDA or B3LYP) is preferable, will be decided by comparing simulation results to known information about He bubble formation rates at elevated temperatures and estimates of Me bubble sizes. Initial simulations suggest that an interstitial He defect, based on either the LDA or the B3LYP dimer curve with a He:Pu density ratio of 0.04, will not remain at an octahedral site as in other fcc metals such as nickel. The He defect may also form a split interstitial with a Pu atom. The details remain to be determined.
