Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study of cases of intense air pollution shows that a part of them is related to periods of extended fogs. The harmful effect of smoke and gaseous admixtures is revealed more sharply in fog than in other weather conditions: an unpleasant feeling from them is increased, the presence of admixtures in fogs furthermore decreases the visibility, etc. One notes a reverse effect when the presence of smoke contributes to the condensation of the atmospheric moisture. In this manner, a mutually increasing effect of smokes and fogs occurs. The report presents the estimates of the influence of river fogs (the theory of which is developed by Berliand and Onikul, on the distribution of gaseous admixtures.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the history of marine fog research and applications, and discusses the physical processes leading to fog's formation, evolution, and dissipation. A special emphasis is on the challenges and advancements of fog observation and modeling as well as on efforts toward operational fog forecasting and linkages and feedbacks between marine fog and the environment.
Book Synopsis Critical Regimes of Two-Phase Flows with a Polydisperse Solid Phase by : Eugene Barsky
Download or read book Critical Regimes of Two-Phase Flows with a Polydisperse Solid Phase written by Eugene Barsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical regimes of two-phase flows with a polydisperse solid phase form the basis of such widespread industrial processes as separation of various powdery materials and minerals dressing. It is impossible to describe such complicated flows analytically. Therefore, this study concentrates on invariants experimentally revealed and theoretically grounded for such flows. This approach can be compared with the situation in gases, where in order to determine principal parameters of their state, one does not need to measure the kinetic energy and velocity of each molecule and find its contribution to the temperature and pressure. These parameters are determined in a simple way for the system on the whole. A novel conception of two-phase flows allowing the formulation of their statistical parameters is physically substantiated. On the basis of the invariants and these parameters, a comprehensive method of estimating and predicting mass transfer in such flows is developed. It is noteworthy that the presented results are mostly phenomenological. Such an approach can be successfully extended to the separation of liquids, gases and isotopes. The book is intended for students and specialists engaged in chemical technology, mineral dressing, ceramics, microelectronics, pharmacology, power generation, thermal engineering and other fields in which flows carrying solid particles are used in the technological process.
Book Synopsis Aircraft Wake Turbulence and Its Detection by : John Olsen
Download or read book Aircraft Wake Turbulence and Its Detection written by John Olsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combination of increasing airport congestion and the ad vent of large transports has caused increased interest in aircraft wake turbulence. A quantitative understanding of the interaction between an aircraft and the vortex wake of a preceding aircraft is necessary for planning future high density air traffic patterns and control systems. The nature of the interaction depends on both the characteristics of the following aircraft and the characteristics of the wake. Some of the questions to be answered are: What deter mines the full characteristics of the vortex wake? What properties of the following aircraft are important? What is the role of pilot response? How are the wake characteristics related to the genera ting aircraft parameters? How does the wake disintegrate and where? Many of these questions were addressed at this first Aircraft Wake Turbulence Symposium sponsored by the Air Force Office of Sci entific Research and The Boeing Company. Workers engaged in aero dynamic research, airport operations, and instrument development came from several count ries to present their results and exchange information. The new results from the meeting provide a current picture of the state of the knowledge on vortex wakes and their interactions with other aircraft. Phenomena previously regarded as mere curiosities have emerged as important tools for understanding or controlling vortex wakes. The new types of instability occurring within the wake may one day be used for promoting early dis integration of the hazardous twin vortex structure.
