Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory of Flight Thirty years ago, in the summer of 1913, the author gave for the first time a university course on the mechanics of airplane ight. On the basis of these lectures and similar ones in the following years there developed a small elementary textbook Fluglehre, which was pub lished up to 1936 in five German editions and translated into several languages. When asked, about three years ago, to prepare an English edition the author found that a book of somewhat different type would be more useful under the present conditions. There already exist in this country several introductory texts on the mechanics of ight suitable for beginners. On the other hand, a mature student or an engineer well versed in the advanced stages of higher mathematics can readily work his way through the currently published research papers. An actual demand does, however, seem to exist for a book at an intermediate level, say, on the borderline between the last year of college and the first year of graduate work. It is assumed that the reader of the present text knows the principles of calculus and has some training in general mechanics inso far as the standard college education provides for these things. Only such parts of the theory of ight as are understandable at this level are presented in the book, the mathematical theory of uid mechanics thus being excluded.1 In order to keep the book within reasonable limits peripheral questions and many details in all topics have had to be omitted. Although the book is meant as a text for students and engineers, it was not the author's purpose to supply the reader with ready-made formulas in which to substitute design data. Nor was it his intention to give a collection of results that the candidate for a degree should memorize. The book aims, as did the Fluglehre, to develop interest in and understanding of the fundamental ideas that underlie the design and the operation of modern aircraft. The problems inserted at the ends of the sections, particularly those marked by an asterisk, are intended to give some direction to the efforts of any reader who would apply himself toward a better comprehension of the diversified questions involved in the theory of airplane ight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aerodynamics: Constituting the First Volume of a Complete Work on Aerial Flight The problems that arise in connection with the study of Aerial Flight are so numerous and of so diverse a character that, except for their relation to the title subject, they would scarcely find place in one volume. In the present work an attempt is made, it is believed for the first time, to treat the classification of the phenomena associated withthe study of Flight on a comprehensive and scientific basis, The origin of the present work may be said to date from some experiments carried out in the year 1894. These experiments, which were primarily directed as a test of certain theoretical views which the author then advanced, resulted In the production Of flying models of remarkable stability, whose equilibrium was not destroyed by an ordinary gale of wind. As originally formulated the theory was incomplete and in many ways imperfect, but it has been developed from time to time during the last twelve years to an extent that to-day renders the approximately correct proportioning of an aerodrome1 a matter of straightforward calculation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanics of the Aeroplane: A Study of the Principles of Flight Books on aeronautics may be roughly divided into two classes: the former written from an exclusively mathematical standpoint, and hence intended for but a small circle of readers; the latter, of a more elementary and popular character, do not, as a general rule, pretend to treat the problem of the aeroplane from its more serious technical and scientific aspects. The present work belongs to neither of these categories. Its purpose is to explain in terms as simple as possible, and with a minimum of formulae, the main principles of dynamic flight; to give the ordinary reader an insight into the various problems involved in the motion and equilibrium of the aeroplane; and to enable him to calculate in the simplest possible manner the various elements and conditions of flight. At the outset of this work it may be well to provide against possible misconception by explaining that it in no way aspires to present in final and conclusive form the intricate problems which constitute the complete theory of the aeroplane in view of the comparative youth of the science, such an attempt cannot be made for many years to come. In consequence, the calculations it contains are approximate only; their numerical value, in fact, is founded on the basis of experiments so few in number that, even though their results be correct, they cannot well be accepted as final. A few words of explanation in regard to the authors treatment of his subject may be required. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. That the results of his investigations were not entirely lost, however, is evident from Henson's machine of 1842, which was an even more astonishing anticipation of modern invention. Henson had not alone grasped the general principles but had also anticipated the actual construction of the aeroplanes that are performing such wonders in the air today. His machine was a monoplane and the wings with their ribbing and silk covering, stayed above and below to central posts placed in the main body, is almost identical with that of the French monoplane, the auxiliary trussing at the center of the planes constituting an arrangement employed on the Antoi nette. In addition to the main planes, there was a hinged rear tail, and a rudder for vertical and horizontal control, and there was like wise a three-wheel chassis on which the machine was designed to run when on the ground. As a parallel to the Wright starting rail, Henson proposed to employ an inclined plane, the run-down which would give the initial impulse necessary to launch the machine in the air. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Aerodynamics Tna work aima at the extraction of principles of flight from, and the illustration of the use of, detailed information on aeronautics now available from many sources; notably the publications of the Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The main outlines of the theory of flight are simple, but the stage of application now reached necessitates careful examination of secondary features. This book is cast with this distinction in View and starts with a description of the various classes of aircraft, both heavier and lighter than air, and then proceeds to develop the laws of steady flight on elementary principles. Later chapters complete the detail as known at the present time and cover predictions and analyses of performance, aeroplane acrobatics, and the general problems of control and stability. The subject of aerodynamics is almost wholly based on experiment, and methods are described of obtaining basic information from tests on aircraft in flight or from tests in a wind channel on models of aircraft and aircraft parts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aerodonetics: Constituting the Second Volume of a Complete Work on Aerial Flight In conducting the investigations and otherwise in collecting and arranging the matter included in the two volumes now completed, the author has made an effort to do, in as thorough a manner as possible, that preparatory work which, in his opinion, should properly precede the serious and hitherto hazardous undertaking of full-scale experiment. It is in other words the author's intention to provide such foundation theory and data as to bring the problem of mechanical flight into the legitimate domain of the engineer, and to obviate in the future all need for empiricism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aeroplane: An Elementary Text-Book of the Principles of Dynamic Flight So swiftly has dynamic flight become practicable and important that those who would make it their study are at a loss for instructors. A new branch of engineering science has appeared; a new and important industry is arising; and there is a steadily-increasing demand for a concise and accurate collation of the knowledge which has al ready been acquired. The purpose of the present work is to provide a complete text-book of the elements of dynamic flight, and to set out in simple language the laws governing aviation. Moreover, bearing in mind the coming requirements of education, the authors have endeavoured to produce a book suitable for schools and colleges as well as for the student and the general reader. Except for the opening chapter, the divisions are purely arbitrary. The factors involved in a consideration of the science and its practice are so interdependent and bound up one with another, that a certain amount of repetition is unavoidable and indeed, for the sake of clearness, essential. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aviation: An Introduction to the Elements of Flight There is an ever-increasing number of people who desire to appreciate the main issues of technical subjects unconnected with their own professions: to such, primarily, I address this Introduction to the study of flight. There is no evading the fundamental technology of any real subject, whether commercial, scientific, or political by nature; the reader must ever provide the interest if he would receive any return whatsoever for his purchase of the author's capital. In this case, as the capital is so small, the initial interest on the reader's part must be all the greater. The scope of the book is indicated by the arrangement and character of the chapters. I have divided the treatment of the subject into four main parts. The first part relates to the fundamental principles of flight; the second part is concerned with practical accomplishment; it refers in detail to the work of certain notable pioneers like Lilienthal and the Wrights, and also has chapters on modem development, as demonstrated, for example, at the military aeroplane trials of 1912. The third part is mainly historical, and is placed in this order so that the significance of the "milestones" may more readily be appreciated. The fourth part is a collection of appendices that have no exact sequence or proper place in the body of the book. Among these I have included several simple numerical examples that may be of some assistance to the student. In any case, there is nothing like a few specific questions and answers as an assistance to fixing ideas on a strange subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wing Theory Mathematical wing theory is of great practical importance and at the same time of considerable theoretical depth and interest. When writing a book on a subject such as this, one is faced, inevitably, with a number of conflicting requirements. There is the desirability of presenting a com prehensive account of the theory as against the practical need for keeping the undertaking within reasonable bounds; there are the demands of mathematical rigour involving at times the introduction of subtle techniques which might be a heavy burden for those who are interested in the subject chiefly for practical reasons; there is the question whether to describe only the most efficient method for the solution of a particular problem, although an earlier and less efficient method provides a better insight into the topic under consideration; and so on. We have tried to resolve all these difficulties by compromise, inclining sometimes to one side and sometimes to the other. We shall not try to justify our choice in detail; the result constitutes the present book, and it is left to the reader to decide whether we have found a reasonable solution to the problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Aerodynamics and the Theory of the Aeroplane, Vol. 1: A Resume of the Principles Evolved, by Past Experiments Knowledge, I find numerous applicants asking for copies of what has appeared, and craving for further information. I think, therefore, that it may be of some assistance to those now working on the subject to bring out the first portion as a complete (if small) volume, and, following the good example of Mr. Lanchester, leave the second part to be published at some future time when I am able to complete it. This second part will deal with such matters as the behaviour of models in the air; details of actual flying machines; propellers; and natural bird flight.
