Book Synopsis Charge Exchange and the Theory of Ion-atom Collisions by : B. H. Bransden

This book was released on 1992 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades, the theory of ion-atom collisions, and particularly of charge-exchange reactions, has advanced rapidly to the point where existing texts are no longer suitable as an introduction to the subject. This book aims to remedy the situation by providing an account of modern theoretical methods used to study the interaction of positive ions with atoms (or ions), concentrating particularly on charge-exchange reactions. These reactions cannot be studied in isolation, and it is necessary to consider to some extent, the whole range of ion-atom collisions leading to elastic scattering, excitation, and ionization. The material is presented at a level suitable for beginning research students and is self-contained, but assumes a knowledge of undergraduate quantum mechanics and atomic physics. It will also be useful for experimentalists who wish to assess the status of theoretical treatments of those collision processes in which they are interested.

Book Synopsis Theoretical Study of Charge Exchange Cross Sections by : A. Dalgarno
Download or read book Theoretical Study of Charge Exchange Cross Sections written by A. Dalgarno and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charge exchange cross sections for fast heavy ions representative of several groups in the periodic table with atmospheric and other atoms have been calculated by using a quantal two-state one-electron method. The principal ions considered have been singly charged K, I, and Cr while target atoms and/or molecules have been N, O, Ar, Ne, H and He. Singly charged lithium, sodium, rubidium, and cesium have also been considered as projectiles in the target gases. Stripping cross sections for fast heavy ions incident on atmospheric and other atoms have been calculated by using an independent scattering model based on the Born approximation. The relationship between the quantal predictions and available experimental results is illustrated and certain improvements to the simple theory are discussed. A comparison is also made between the electron loss theory and available experimental results. Capture into excited states is discussed, and estimates are made of the appropriate cross sections. The rate of energy loss by heavy ions in air is discussed. (Author).

Book Synopsis Quantum Theory of High-Energy Ion-Atom Collisions by : Dzevad Belkic
Download or read book Quantum Theory of High-Energy Ion-Atom Collisions written by Dzevad Belkic and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the Top Selling Physics Books according to YBP Library Services Suitable for graduate students, experienced researchers, and experts, this book provides a state-of-the-art review of the non-relativistic theory of high-energy ion-atom collisions. Special attention is paid to four-body interactive dynamics through the most important theoretical methods available to date by critically analyzing their foundation and practical usefulness relative to virtually all the relevant experimental data. Fast ion-atom collisions are of paramount importance in many high-priority branches of science and technology, including accelerator-based physics, the search for new sources of energy, controlled thermonuclear fusion, plasma research, the earth’s environment, space research, particle transport physics, therapy of cancer patients by heavy ions, and more. These interdisciplinary fields are in need of knowledge about many cross sections and collisional rates for the analyzed fast ion-atom collisions, such as single ionization, excitation, charge exchange, and various combinations thereof. These include two-electron transitions, such as double ionization, excitation, or capture, as well as simultaneous electron transfer and ionization or excitation and the like—all of which are analyzed in depth in this book. Quantum Theory of High-Energy Ion-Atom Collisions focuses on multifaceted mechanisms of collisional phenomena with heavy ions and atoms at non-relativistic high energies.
Book Synopsis Fast Collisions of Light Ions With Matter by : Dzevad Belkic
Download or read book Fast Collisions of Light Ions With Matter written by Dzevad Belkic and published by . This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal goal of this book is to provide state-of-the-art coverage of the non-relativistic three-body theory of high-energy ion–atom collisions. The main aspects of generalizations to tissue-like molecular targets, such as water, are also outlined. The focus is on the most frequently studied two processes, single electron capture and ionization. For the studied collisions, the literature has seen enormous renewal of activity in the development and applications of quantum-mechanical theories. This subject is of great relevance in several branches of science and technology, such as accelerator-based physics, research in new sources of energy and high temperature fusion of light ions. Other important applications are in the life sciences and medicine, where high-energy ion beams are used in cancer therapy. Therefore, it is necessary to present this field in its full capacity with the primary emphasis on realistic prospects for multidisciplinary applications, especially in radiotherapy. The present book is aimed to match the growing demand from theory and experiment, as motivated by high relevance for fundamental physics as well as for other fields such as fusion, medicine, etc. The overall emphasis in this book is not on compilation of cross sections, but rather on collisional mechanisms involving ions and atoms at high non-relativistic energies. The principal outlines for extensions of the analyzed theories' molecular targets (e.g. water) are also presented for the needs of hadron therapy.
Book Synopsis Charge Exchange Losses During Cyclotron Acceleration by :
Download or read book Charge Exchange Losses During Cyclotron Acceleration written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative estimates of charge exchange (CE) losses during acceleration are very important in the design and operation of heavy ion cyclotrons. Such estimates have been made using a vacuum model computer code which was developed to establish vacuum requirements for the MSU superconducting heavy ion cyclotron. This code uses pressure and cross-section data to calculate the radial loss of beam due to charge exchange. Since CE cross sections and radial pressure profiles are not always well known, certain specific measurements have been made using the LBL 88-Inch Cyclotron to provide experimental data needed to test the code. These include measurements of pressure versus radius under vacuum conditions closely approximating those existing during acceleration of 14N/sup 4 -/ and 4°Ar/sup 8 -/ beams. Beam intensity versus radius data demonstrating transmission losses for three beams are presented. Comparisons with theoretical predictions are given.
Book Synopsis Charge Transfer Processes in Condensed Media by : J. Ulstrup
Download or read book Charge Transfer Processes in Condensed Media written by J. Ulstrup and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecules in liquid and solid media are exposed to strong inter action forces from the surrounding medium. The formulation of a comprehensive theory of chemical processes in condensed media is consequently an elaborate task involving concepts from several areas of the natural sciences. Within the las~ two and a half decades very notable results towards the formulation of a 'unified' quantum mechanical theory of such processes have in fact been achieved, and by the variety of physical, chemical, and biological processes which can be suitably covered by this framework, the new theory represents an adequate alternative to the transition state theory. The present work has a two-fold purpose. Firstly, to provide a reasonably organized exposition of some basic aspects of these developments. This part emphasizes the fundamental similarities between chemical and other kinds of radiationless processes and includes the derivation of the most important rate expressions without resorting to involved mathematical techniques. The s- ond major purpose is to illustrate the 'unified' character of the rate theory by analysis of a considerable amount of expe- mental data from both 'conventional' kinetics and from such untraditional areas as low-temperature, strongly exothermic, and biological processes. Particular attention is here given to those systems for which a classical description is inadequate, and which provide a diagnostic distinction between several alternative theoretical approaches.
