Son livre Théorie de la grande guerre se veut une réfutation implicite de Clausewitz, une synthèse de la stratégie et de la philosophie hégélienne. Théorie de la grande guerre du général Karl von Willisen n'a plus qu'un intérêt historique. D'un point de vue théorique, il doit surtout être regardé comme un anti-modèle, comme l'égarement d'une pensée déconnectée du réel, d'une stratégie purement spéculative au lieu d'être pragmatique. La preuve en sera d'ailleurs administrée par l'auteur lui-même dont les théories aboutiront à une faillite lamentable lorsqu'il sera mis à la tête d'une armée sur un champ de bataille. Le livre du général Willisen n'en reste pas moins à lire, d'un point de vue historique pour comprendre le développement de la pensée stratégique au XIXe siècle, d'un point de vue théorique pour mettre en garde l'intellectualisme pur et la tentation, toujours présente, de construire un modèle stratégique sans tenir compte de la pression de la réalité. Le livre est précédé d'une substantielle introduction de Jean-Jacques Langendorf, le meilleur connaisseur de l'histoire de la pensée militaire allemande, qui retrace l'étonnante destinée du général Willisen et le situe dans le mouvement des idées militaires de son temps.
