Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Unified Grand Tour of Theoretical Physics invites its readers to a guided exploration of the theoretical ideas that shape our contemporary understanding of the physical world at the fundamental level. Its central themes, comprising space-time geometry and the general relativistic account of gravity, quantum field theory and the gauge theories of fundamental forces, and statistical mechanics and the theory of phase transitions, are developed in explicit mathematical detail, with an emphasis on conceptual understanding. Straightforward treatments of the standard models of particle physics and cosmology are supplemented with introductory accounts of more speculative theories, including supersymmetry and string theory. This third edition of the Tour includes a new chapter on quantum gravity, focusing on the approach known as Loop Quantum Gravity, while new sections provide extended discussions of topics that have become prominent in recent years, such as the Higgs boson, massive neutrinos, cosmological perturbations, dark energy and matter, and the thermodynamics of black holes. Designed for those in search of a solid grasp of the inner workings of these theories, but who prefer to avoid a full-scale assault on the research literature, the Tour assumes as its point of departure a familiarity with basic undergraduate-level physics, and emphasizes the interconnections between aspects of physics that are more often treated in isolation. The companion website at www.unifiedgrandtours.org provides further resources, including a comprehensive manual of solutions to the end-of-chapter exercises.

Book excerpt: Fluid Mechanics, Second Edition deals with fluid mechanics, that is, the theory of the motion of liquids and gases. Topics covered range from ideal fluids and viscous fluids to turbulence, boundary layers, thermal conduction, and diffusion. Surface phenomena, sound, and shock waves are also discussed, along with gas flow, combustion, superfluids, and relativistic fluid dynamics. This book is comprised of 16 chapters and begins with an overview of the fundamental equations of fluid dynamics, including Euler's equation and Bernoulli's equation. The reader is then introduced to the equations of motion of a viscous fluid; energy dissipation in an incompressible fluid; damping of gravity waves; and the mechanism whereby turbulence occurs. The following chapters explore the laminar boundary layer; thermal conduction in fluids; dynamics of diffusion of a mixture of fluids; and the phenomena that occur near the surface separating two continuous media. The energy and momentum of sound waves; the direction of variation of quantities in a shock wave; one- and two-dimensional gas flow; and the intersection of surfaces of discontinuity are also also considered. This monograph will be of interest to theoretical physicists.

Book excerpt: This two-part text fills what has often been a void in the first-year graduate physics curriculum. Through its examination of particles and continua, it supplies a lucid and self-contained account of classical mechanics — which in turn provides a natural framework for introducing many of the advanced mathematical concepts in physics. The text opens with Newton's laws of motion and systematically develops the dynamics of classical particles, with chapters on basic principles, rotating coordinate systems, lagrangian formalism, small oscillations, dynamics of rigid bodies, and hamiltonian formalism, including a brief discussion of the transition to quantum mechanics. This part of the book also considers examples of the limiting behavior of many particles, facilitating the eventual transition to a continuous medium. The second part deals with classical continua, including chapters on string membranes, sound waves, surface waves on nonviscous fluids, heat conduction, viscous fluids, and elastic media. Each of these self-contained chapters provides the relevant physical background and develops the appropriate mathematical techniques, and problems of varying difficulty appear throughout the text.

This book was released on 2001-11-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today many important directions of research are being pursued more or less independently of each other. These are, for instance, strings and mem branes, induced gravity, embedding of spacetime into a higher dimensional space, the brane world scenario, the quantum theory in curved spaces, Fock Schwinger proper time formalism, parametrized relativistic quantum the ory, quantum gravity, wormholes and the problem of “time machines”, spin and supersymmetry, geometric calculus based on Clifford algebra, various interpretations of quantum mechanics including the Everett interpretation, and the recent important approach known as “decoherence”. A big problem, as I see it, is that various people thoroughly investigate their narrow field without being aware of certain very close relations to other fields of research. What we need now is not only to see the trees but also the forest. In the present book I intend to do just that: to carry out a first approximation to a synthesis of the related fundamental theories of physics. I sincerely hope that such a book will be useful to physicists. From a certain viewpoint the book could be considered as a course in the oretical physics in which the foundations of all those relevant fundamental theories and concepts are attempted to be thoroughly reviewed. Unsolved problems and paradoxes are pointed out. I show that most of those ap proaches have a common basis in the theory of unconstrained membranes. The very interesting and important concept of membrane space, the tensor calculus in and functional transformations in are discussed.

Book excerpt: This book addresses a fascinating set of questions in theoretical physics which will both entertain and enlighten all students, teachers and researchers and other physics aficionados. These range from Newtonian mechanics to quantum field theory and cover several puzzling issues that do not appear in standard textbooks. Some topics cover conceptual conundrums, the solutions to which lead to surprising insights; some correct popular misconceptions in the textbook discussion of certain topics; others illustrate deep connections between apparently unconnected domains of theoretical physics; and a few provide remarkably simple derivations of results which are not often appreciated. The connoisseur of theoretical physics will enjoy a feast of pleasant surprises skilfully prepared by an internationally acclaimed theoretical physicist. Each topic is introduced with proper background discussion and special effort is taken to make the discussion self-contained, clear and comprehensible to anyone with an undergraduate education in physics.

Book excerpt: The third volume of the series entitled "Symposia on Theoretical Physics" comprises the lectures delivered at the First Matscience Summer School on Theoretical Physics held in Bangalore for three weeks from August 24 to September 13, 1964. The academic program of the summer school consisted mainly of several invited lectures by both foreign and Indian scientists. Among the participants were the following: Professor R. Oehme, University of Chicago (United States); Professor K. Symanzik, New York Uni versity (United States); Professor E. R. Caianiello, Director, Institute for Theoretical Physics, Naples (Italy); Professor W. Brenig, Max Planck Institute (West Germany); Professor F. Calogero, University of Rome (Italy); Dr. A. Fujii, School of Science and Technology, Sophia University (Japan); Dr. J. Lukierski, University of Wroclaw (Poland). All were visiting scientists at Matscience. It was a very fortunate circumstance that this summer school was held immediately after the International Conference on High-Energy Physics at Dubna, U .S.S.R. Among the various topics discussed at the Dubna Conference, of particular interest is the reported violation of CP invariance and, hence, the violation also of time reversal ( T) invariance in some weak interactions as well as successful demonstra tion of SU 3 symmetry of elementary particle interactions. These were summarized by Professor Ramakrishnan who had attended the Dubna Conference.

The theory of the addition of angular momenta, collision theory, and the theory of symmetry are examined, together with spin, nuclear structure, motion in a magnetic field, and diatomic and polyatomic molecules. This book is comprised of 18 chapters and begins with an introduction to the basic concepts of quantum mechanics, with emphasis on the uncertainty principle, the principle of superposition, and operators, as well as the continuous spectrum and the wave function. The following chapters explore energy and momentum; Schrödinger's equation; angular momentum; and motion in a centrally symmetric field and in a magnetic field. Perturbation theory, spin, and the properties of quasi-classical systems are also considered. The remaining chapters deal with the identity of particles, atoms, and diatomic and polyatomic molecules. The final two chapters describe elastic and inelastic collisions. This monograph will be a valuable source of information for physicists.
