Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical calculations describing the initiation in heterogeneous TNT, RDX, Tetryl, Comp B, Pentolite, and 75/25 Cyclotol, produced by shocks up to 37 kilobars, are given. The hot spot initiation mechanism is simulated by using appropriate equations of state of the explosives and the resultant growth from shock to detonation wave is shown to be in qualitative agreement with experimental results. The shock wave in the explosive travels with increasing velocity due to the release of energy during chemical reaction in the neighborhood of the shock front, and then takes on a constant value upon reaching full detonation velocity. Numerical experiments show that the qualitative ordering of the sensitivity of the 6 explosives, based on one- dimensional gap test calculations, is the same as that obtained from U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory experimental gap tests.

Book excerpt: This world-famous work has been enlarged and updated without tampering with its tried and tested format. Around 500 alphabetically ordered, monographic entries consider the physicochemical properties, production methods and safe applications of over 120 explosive chemicals, while discussing 70 fuels, additives and oxidizing agents and describing the relevant test methods. The extensive thermodynamic data has been thoroughly updated and now also provided on a CD-ROM compiled by the Fraunhofer Institute of Chemical Technology. This excerpt from the ICT Thermodynamical Database not only includes additional thermodynamic data, and references to further reading, but also features enhanced search facilities. Other key features include a 1,500-entry combined index and glossary with terms and abbreviations in English, French and German, conversion tables and numerous literature references. A handy reference for explosive experts and also for translators, public authorities and patent lawyers. From reviews of previous editions: '... This wealth of information and an index that comprises some 1500 keywords and several conversion tables make this a unique source of knowledge for anybody working with explosives.' Book excerpt: The main goal of this project, is to calculate the activation energy of explosive molecules. Progress has come in the form of four different approaches to the problem: (1) Configuration interaction method; (2) Guassian 82 Computer program; (3) MNDOOC procedure; (4) Green's function techniques. We will have the first Cray version of Dr. Henry F. Schaefer's CI programs, and access to several large Cray computers on which to run the programs. As a result, we expect to perform very large and highly accurate CI calculations on explosive molecules of interest. The Guassian 82 Computer Program is generally considered to be state of the art program in the area of Moller-Plesset perturbation theory. We have recently obtained access to a new Cray version of Guassian 82 which is not yet available to the general scientific community and we expect to perform activation energy calculations that are better and more accurate values than those that were previously possible using Guassian 82. The MNDOC method, which is a new correlated version of the MNDO method, has been used to compute accurate values for the activation energy of methyl nitrate. We have recently used Green's function theory to derive a new one-electron equation that goes beyond previous one-electron equations to include higher order correlation terms. As correlation plays a very important part in molecular reactions, this new equation is expected to lead to significant improvements in the calculation of molecular activation energies.
