Book Synopsis Theoretical Aspects of Passivization in the Framework of Applicative Grammar by : Jean-Pierre Desclés
Download or read book Theoretical Aspects of Passivization in the Framework of Applicative Grammar written by Jean-Pierre Desclés and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passivization is explained by using the formalism of combinatory logic. The agented passive is derived from the agentless as follows: a term denoting an agent is transposed into a predicate modifier and applied to the passive predicate of the agentless construction. The passive predicate consists of two parts: 1) the two-place converse of the active predicate and 2) a zero unspecified term to which the converse predicate is applied. The passive is not derived from but is related to the active. The modifier of the passive predicate is the functional counterpart of the subject in the active. The proposed hypothesis gives an adequate solution to problems arising from various types of passive constructions. Passivization and antipassivization are defined as instances of a general cross-linguistic process involving conversion.
Book Synopsis Alternative Logics. Do Sciences Need Them? by : Paul A. Weingartner
Download or read book Alternative Logics. Do Sciences Need Them? written by Paul A. Weingartner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially proposed as rivals of classical logic, alternative logics have become increasingly important in sciences such as quantum physics, computer science, and artificial intelligence. The contributions collected here address the question whether the usage of logic in the sciences, especially in modern physics, requires a deviation from classical mathematical logic. The articles in the first part of the book set the scene by describing the context and the dilemma when applying logic in science. In Part II the authors offer several logics that deviate in different ways. The twelve papers in Part III investigate in detail specific aspects such as quantum logic, quantum computation, computer-science considerations, praxic logic, and quantum probability. The monograph provides a succinct picture of recent research in alternative logics as they have been developed for applications in the sciences.
Book Synopsis Signs, Mind, and Reality by : Sebastian Shaumyan
Download or read book Signs, Mind, and Reality written by Sebastian Shaumyan and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a new science of semiotic linguistics. The goal of semiotic linguistics is to discover what characterizes language as an intermediary between the mind and reality so that language creates the picture of reality we perceive. The cornerstone of semiotic linguistics is the discovery and resolution of language antinomies -contradictions between two apparently reasonable principles or laws. Language antinomies constitute the essence of language, and hence must be studied from both linguistic and philosophical points of view. The basic language antinomy which underlies all other antinomies is the antinomy between meaning and information. Both generative and classical linguistic theories are unaware of the need to distinguish between meaning and information. By confounding these notions they are unable to discover language antinomies and confine their research to naturalistic description of superficial language phenomena rather than the quest for the essence of language.(Series A)

Book Synopsis Complex Verb Formation by : D. Gary Miller
Download or read book Complex Verb Formation written by D. Gary Miller and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1993-01-21 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation of complex verb formation seeks to identify and clarify the way(s) in which a base verb becomes 'complex'. The author carefully considers both the syntactic and the morphological side of this question, and in doing so brings a wealth of data from very diverse languages to bear on claims made about the relationship between syntactic and morphological structure. The work takes the radical position that most data admit of either a syntactic (Phrase Structure) or lexical analysis because both are likely to be valid — under different circumstances. Both approaches are consistently defended in an attempt to illustrate the complementarity of the two and ascertain which is the better formulation for a given set of data. Placing his analysis firmly in the context of historical linguistics, the author shows that it is necessary to admit the possibility of lexicalization. The book pays attention to many alternative viewpoints, and its value is further enhanced by a 40-page bibliography. Miller's insightful treatment of questions of lexical decomposition, the relationship of morphology to syntax, and the encoding of argument structure on verbs make this a work of the utmost importance for syntacticians as well as morphologists.

Book excerpt: The book focuses on original approaches intended to support the development of biologically inspired cognitive architectures. It bridges together different disciplines, from classical artificial intelligence to linguistics, from neuro- and social sciences to design and creativity, among others. The chapters, based on contributions presented at the Eleventh Annual Meeting of the BICA Society, held on November 10-14, 2020, in Natal, Brazil, discuss emerging methods, theories and ideas towards the realization of general-purpose humanlike artificial intelligence or fostering a better understanding of the ways the human mind works. All in all, the book provides engineers, mathematicians, psychologists, computer scientists and other experts with a timely snapshot of recent research and a source of inspiration for future developments in the broadly intended areas of artificial intelligence and biological inspiration.
Book Synopsis The Syntactic Process by : Mark Steedman
Download or read book The Syntactic Process written by Mark Steedman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2001-07-27 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers topics in formal linguistics, intonational phonology, computational linguistics, and experimental psycholinguistics, presenting them as an integrated theory of the language faculty. In this book Mark Steedman argues that the surface syntax of natural languages maps spoken and written forms directly to a compositional semantic representation that includes predicate-argument structure, quantification, and information structure without constructing any intervening structural representation. His purpose is to construct a principled theory of natural grammar that is directly compatible with both explanatory linguistic accounts of a number of problematic syntactic phenomena and a straightforward computational account of the way sentences are mapped onto representations of meaning. The radical nature of Steedman's proposal stems from his claim that much of the apparent complexity of syntax, prosody, and processing follows from the lexical specification of the grammar and from the involvement of a small number of universal rule-types for combining predicates and arguments. These syntactic operations are related to the combinators of Combinatory Logic, engendering a much freer definition of derivational constituency than is traditionally assumed. This property allows Combinatory Categorial Grammar to capture elegantly the structure and interpretation of coordination and intonation contour in English as well as some well-known interactions between word order, coordination, and relativization across a number of other languages. It also allows more direct compatibility with incremental semantic interpretation during parsing. The book covers topics in formal linguistics, intonational phonology, computational linguistics, and experimental psycholinguistics, presenting them as an integrated theory of the language faculty in a form accessible to readers from any of those fields.
Book Synopsis Major pillars of German syntax by : Peter Rolf Lutzeier
Download or read book Major pillars of German syntax written by Peter Rolf Lutzeier and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-01-02 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the book series Linguistische Arbeiten [Linguistic Studies], comprising over 500 volumes, has made a significant contribution to the development of linguistic theory both in Germany and internationally. The series will continue to deliver new impulses for research and maintain the central insight of linguistics that progress can only be made in acquiring new knowledge about human languages both synchronically and diachronically by closely combining empirical and theoretical analyses. To this end, we invite submission of high-quality linguistic studies from all the central areas of general linguistics and the linguistics of individual languages which address topical questions, discuss new data and advance the development of linguistic theory.
Book Synopsis Television Advertising and Televangelism by : Rosemarie Schmidt
Download or read book Television Advertising and Televangelism written by Rosemarie Schmidt and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research reported in this volume attempts to refine our understanding of persuasive messages of television advertising by studying the role of language in persuasion in two ways. First, it comprises an attempt to refine our understanding of how language might function in persuasion by examining relevant work from a variety of related disciplines, potentially germane either in terms of their theoretical approaches to the process or in terms of the actual linguistic techniques which they have suggested as enhancing the persuasive impact of a message. Second, a comparative study was undertaken in order to test the generalizability of the linguistic features found to characterize persuasive language in television advertising.

Book Synopsis Arrays, Functional Languages, and Parallel Systems by : Lenore Mullin
Download or read book Arrays, Functional Languages, and Parallel Systems written by Lenore Mullin and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-10-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a meeting in Toronto last winter, Mike Jenkins, Bob Bernecky and I were discussing how the two existing theories on arrays influenced or were in fluenced by programming languages and systems. More's Army Theory was the basis for NIAL and APL2 and Mullin's A Mathematics of A rmys(MOA) , is being used as an algebra of arrays in functional and A-calculus based pro gramming languages. MOA was influenced by Iverson's initial and extended algebra, the foundations for APL and J respectively. We discussed that there is a lot of interest in the Computer Science and Engineering communities concerning formal methods for languages that could support massively parallel operations in scientific computing, a back to-roots interest for both Mike and myself. Languages for this domain can no longer be informally developed since it is necessary to map languages easily to many multiprocessor architectures. Software systems intended for parallel computation require a formal basis so that modifications can be done with relative ease while ensuring integrity in design. List based lan guages are profiting from theoretical foundations such as the Bird-Meertens formalism. Their theory has been successfully used to describe list based parallel algorithms across many classes of architectures.
