Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charged Particle Optics Theory: An Introduction identifies the most important concepts of charged particle optics theory, and derives each mathematically from the first principles of physics. Assuming an advanced undergraduate-level understanding of calculus, this book follows a logical progression, with each concept building upon the preceding one. Beginning with a non-mathematical survey of the optical nature of a charged particle beam, the text: Discusses both geometrical and wave optics, as well as the correspondence between them Describes the two-body scattering problem, which is essential to the interaction of a fast charged particle with matter Introduces electron emission as a practical consequence of quantum mechanics Addresses the Fourier transform and the linear second-order differential equation Includes problems to amplify and fill in the theoretical details, with solutions presented separately Charged Particle Optics Theory: An Introduction makes an ideal textbook as well as a convenient reference on the theoretical origins of the optics of charged particle beams. It is intended to prepare the reader to understand the large body of published research in this mature field, with the end result translated immediately to practical application.

Book excerpt: Assembling an international team of experts, this book reports on the progress in the rapidly growing field of monolithic micro- and nanoresonators. The book opens with a chapter on photonic crystal-based resonators (nanocavities). It goes on to describe resonators in which the closed trajectories of light are supported by any variety of total internal reflection in curved and polygonal transparent dielectric structures. The book also covers distributed feedback microresonators for slow light, controllable dispersion, and enhanced nonlinearity. A portion of coverage is dedicated to the unique properties of resonators, which are extremely efficient tools when conducting multiple applications.

Book excerpt: This book explains how to understand and analyze the working principles of optical systems by means of optical theories and case studies. Part I focuses mainly on the theory of classical optics, providing an introduction to geometrical and wave optics, and some concepts of quantum and statistical optics. Part II presents case studies of three practical optical systems that comprise important and commonly used optical elements: confocal microscopes, online co-phasing optical systems for segmented mirrors, and adaptive optics systems. With the theoretical background gained in Part I, readers can apply their understanding of the optical systems presented in Part II to the conception of their own novel optical systems. The book can be used as a text or reference guide for students majoring in optics or physics. It can also be used as a reference for any scientist, engineer, or researcher whose work involves optical systems.

Book excerpt: Optical components are essential key elements in modern engineering and everyday life. The education of skilled personnel and specialists in the fields of theoretical and practical optics manufacturing is of essential importance for next-generation technologies. Against this background, this book provides the basis for the education and advanced training of precision and ophthalmic optics technicians, craftsmen, and foremen, and it is an extensive reference work for students, academics, optical designers or shop managers, and production engineers. It not only covers particularly used and applied machines, working materials, testing procedures, and machining steps for classical optics manufacturing, but it also addresses the production and specification of optical glasses as well as unconventional production techniques and novel approaches. Optics Manufacturing: Components and Systems furthermore covers the basics of light propagation and provides an overview on optical materials and components; presents an introduction and explanation of the necessary considerations and procedures for the initial definition of manufacturing tolerances and the relevant industrial standards for optics manufacturing; and addresses the production of micro optics, the assembly of opto-mechanical setups and possible manufacturing errors, and the impact of the resulting inaccuracies. In order to allow fast and clear access to the most essential information, each chapter ends with a short summary of the most important aspects, including an explanation of relevant equations, symbols, and abbreviations. For further reading, extensive lists of references are also provided. Finally, exercises on the covered basic principles of optics, approaches, and techniques of optics manufacturing—including their corresponding detailed solutions—are found in the appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the theory and technology of integrated op tics for graduate students in electrical engineering, and for practicing engi neers and scientists who wish to improve their understanding of the princi pIesand applications ofthis relatively new, and rapidly growing, field. Integrated Optics is the name given to a new generation of opto-electro nie systems in which the familiar wires and cables are replaced by light waveguiding optical fibers, and conventional integrated circuits are replaced by optical integrated circuits (OIC's). In an OIC, the signal is carried by means of a beam of light rather than by an electrical current, and the various circuit elements are interconnected on the substrate wafer by optical wave guides. Some advantages of an integrated-optic system are reduced weight, increased bandwidth (or multiplexing capability), resistance to electro magnetic interference, and low loss signal transmission. Because of the voluminous work that has been done in the field of inte grated optics since its inception in the late 1960's, the areas of fiber optics and optical integrated circuits have usually been treated separately at confe rences and in textbooks. In the author's opinion, this separation is unfortu nate because the two areas are closely related. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that it may be a practical necessity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Hunsperger's Integrated Optics is one of the few texts that is comprehensive and thorough enough for use both as a classroom text (practice problems are included) and as a specialist's reference. The gratifying success of the first two editions and the continuing rapid development of the field necessitated the writing of this third edition. All chapters have been revised and updated, and a new chapter, on quantum well devices, has been added. As in the previous editions, detailed descriptions of the phenomena, devices, and technology used in optical integrated circuits and their relationship to fiber optics are presented. The trend of telecommunications toward the use of single mode systems operating at the longer wavelengths of 1.3 and 1.55 μm is explained and documented with illustrations of recently developed devices and systems. Broader coverage of GaInAsP devices and optical integrated circuits is provided, and the new growth tech- niques of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are described. A discussion of the extensive development of hybrid optical integrated circuits in lithium niobate is also included. From the reviews: I never had the opportunity of using Hunsperger as a text to teach from but after reading the present third edition, I think it must be a pleasure to do so. It is a good book because of its precise language and its didactic organization (with many clear tables), it is exhaustive in its details, and rigorous in its background; it is well suited for a graduate-level course.
