Book excerpt: Thermoacoustic engines can be used to pump heat using a sound wave (refrigerator or heat pump) or pump a sound wave using a temperature gradient (prime mover). The basic arrangement is a gas-filled acoustic resonator with appropriately positioned thermoacoustic elements. Two types of thermoacoustic elements are used in these engines. The first type are heat exchanges which are used to communicate heat between the gas and external heat reservoirs. The second type is the thermoacoustic engine (TAE), also known as a stack. The TAEs are sections of porous media that support the temperature gradient, the transport heat on the acoustic wave between the exchangers, and that produces or absorbs acoustic power. Previous theoretical results in thermoacoustics have been developed for TAEs with circular or parallel slit pore geometries. We have developed a general linear formulation for gas-filled TAEs having pores of arbitrary cross-sectional geometry. This analysis, which is very helpful in designing optimal engines, indicates the parallel slit pore geometry optimizes heat and work flow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general performance of a thermoacoustic prime mover or refrigerator is reasonably well understood. There are notable discrepancies between theory and experiment. These discrepancies are typically attributed to nonlinear terms not included in the theory. There is evidence, however, that interactions between elements in the thermoacoustic device are at least partially responsible. An experimental investigation of the element interactions in a thermoacoustic prime mover and comparison to theoretical predictions was undertaken in this dissertation to minimize the temperature difference across the stack necessary to achieve onset of self oscillations (Delta T). This was accomplished by varying the position or physical dimensions of the thermoacoustic system or elements to modify the interactions and modifying the working fluid properties through binary mixing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically presents the consolidated findings of the phenomenon of self-organization observed during the onset of thermoacoustic instability using approaches from dynamical systems and complex systems theory. Over the last decade, several complex dynamical states beyond limit cycle oscillations such as quasiperiodicity, frequency-locking, period-n, chaos, strange non-chaos, and intermittency have been discovered in thermoacoustic systems operated in laminar and turbulent flow regimes. During the onset of thermoacoustic instability in turbulent systems, an ordered acoustic field and large coherent vortices emerge from the background of turbulent combustion. This emergence of order from disorder in both temporal and spatiotemporal dynamics is explored in the contexts of synchronization, pattern formation, collective interaction, multifractality, and complex networks. For the past six decades, the spontaneous emergence of large amplitude, self-sustained, tonal oscillations in confined combustion systems, characterized as thermoacoustic instability, has remained one of the most challenging areas of research. The presence of such instabilities continues to hinder the development and deployment of high-performance combustion systems used in power generation and propulsion applications. Even with the advent of sophisticated measurement techniques to aid experimental investigations and vast improvements in computational power necessary to capture flow physics in high fidelity simulations, conventional reductionist approaches have not succeeded in explaining the plethora of dynamical behaviors and the associated complexities that arise in practical combustion systems. As a result, models and theories based on such approaches are limited in their application to mitigate or evade thermoacoustic instabilities, which continue to be among the biggest concerns for engine manufacturers today. This book helps to overcome these limitations by providing appropriate methodologies to deal with nonlinear thermoacoustic oscillations, and by developing control strategies that can mitigate and forewarn thermoacoustic instabilities. The book is also beneficial to scientists and engineers studying the occurrence of several other instabilities, such as flow-induced vibrations, compressor surge, aeroacoustics and aeroelastic instabilities in diverse fluid-mechanical environments, to graduate students who intend to apply dynamical systems and complex systems approach to their areas of research, and to physicists who look for experimental applications of their theoretical findings on nonlinear and complex systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The energy transition implemented at a global level implies restrictions and regulations that greatly affect the transport sector. The International Energy Agency estimates that 23% of greenhouse gas emissions come from this sector. The vehicles used today, whether combustion or hybrid, are machines that have great inherent inefficiencies during their operation. It is estimated that in vehicles with internal combustion engines, approximately 20% of the chemical energy stored in the fuel tank is converted into useful work that is invested in the operation of the vehicle itself. The remaining energy is lost in several of their systems by mechanical dissipation and most of it, a third, by heat dissipation through the exhaust system. In an attempt to recover "wasted" thermal energy, different technologies have been developed in the field of "Waste Heat Recovery" and "Energy harvesting", which try to make it useful to increase the overall efficiency of a vehicle.Against this background, the book focuses on the theoretical and experimental study of Stirling Thermoacoustic Stirling-Like Cycle Engine (TA-SLiCE). It begins with a comprehensive study of the state of the art on TA-SLiCE, classifying each of the technologies presented in the literature according to the electrical power provided. One of the main goals of this book is the praxis from the first steps, so the reader is guided in the design and manufacture of a compact Stirling thermoacoustic energy recovery engine, operating in laboratory conditions. In addition, the device itself is an academic tool for knowledge transfer. The second main objective of this publication is the application of a methodology for energy analysis and optimization of thermo-acoustic devices, which does not exist so far in the specialized literature. This new perspective, which avoids complicated mathematical treatments, facilitates access to this fascinating technology for all audiences. The presented methodology is based on the distribution of the active and reactive acoustic power flow according to the passive acoustic circuit. In addition, this approach allows optimizing the TA-SLiCE by comparing different acoustic circuits. This method is evaluated at a theoretical level with the models and simulations developed and later validated with its evaluation at an experimental level, carrying out tests in the manufactured TA-SLiCE demonstrator, for each of the case studies described.Materias

Book excerpt: In experiments on a prototypical combustor, Richard Steinert identifies new insights on the impact of noise on the phenomenon known as thermoacoustic instability. The phenomenon is a concerning issue which creates a technical limit on the efficiency and environmental impact of fossil fuels combustion in industrial combustors. It poses a threat to the structural integrity of practical systems such as gas turbine combustors and rocket engines. The experiments demonstrate that thermoacoustic systems feature an interesting noise-induced behaviour known as coherence resonance – a coherent response of dynamical systems close to their stability boundary that is induced by stochastic excitation. The work contained in this publication is an example illustrating the importance of fundamental considerations in solving perplexing engineering issues.

Book excerpt: Thermoacoustic heat transport and its applications, such as thermoacoustic engines and refrigerators, have been discussed in a number of articles over the past several years. However, lacking from these articles is a thorough, quantitative experimental investigation of the basic theory underlying thermoacoustic heat transport. Such an investigation is the purpose of this thesis. A logical starting point for such a study is to investigate the simplest class of thermoacoustic engine - a stack of short plates referred to as a ThermoAcoustic Couple, or TAC. The utility of this choice is that the theory can be reduced to its simplest form for analysis of the results. The results of measurements of thermoacoustically generated temperature gradients in TACs subjected to acoustic standing waves are reported. The value of the temperature gradient, which results from an acoustically generated entropy flow in the gas in thermal contact with the plate, is a function of the acoustic pressure amplitude, the mean gas pressure, the Prandtl number of the gas, the configuration of the TAC, and its position in the standing wave. Measurements were made with a computer controlled apparatus for drive ratios (the ratio of the acoustic pressure amplitude to the mean pressure of the gas) from approximately 0.1 to 2%, in argon and helium having mean standing wave.
