Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, SIld disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna and broader dissemination. tional publishing house to assure improved service Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 30 (thesis year 1985) a total of 12,400 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 186 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.

Book Synopsis Groundwater-induced geological disasters in underground engineering: Theoretical, experimental, and numerical approaches by : Shengli Yang
Download or read book Groundwater-induced geological disasters in underground engineering: Theoretical, experimental, and numerical approaches written by Shengli Yang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water inrush (WI) is one of the most dangerous geological disasters in underground engineering, with significant human casualties and economic losses. To prevent and control WI disasters, great efforts have been made to address WI mechanisms for more than half a century. In particular, the seepage instability theory is hitherto one of the most widely used theoretical models. This theory portrays that the seepage system will undergo structural instability when the initial values of permeability and boundary pressure meet certain conditions, which manifests that the permeability parameter is one of the most valuable indicators to unveil WI mechanisms. However, rock permeability is determined by its internal structural characteristics, which can be affected by water chemical composition, stress environment, and temperature. In this regard, it is of great necessity and importance to facilitate a better understanding of the holistic impacts of multi-field coupling on rock internal structure and deformation failure characteristics. This Research Topic aims to initiate a global forum for presenting and disseminating the latest advancements of WI mechanisms, which entails the characterization of physical and laboratory tests, 3D reconstruction of rock internal structure, numerical approaches, theoretical models under multi-field coupling, and filed date analysis methods.
Book Synopsis High Strength Support for Soft Surrounding Rock in Deep Underground Engineering by : Qi Wang
Download or read book High Strength Support for Soft Surrounding Rock in Deep Underground Engineering written by Qi Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the field of surrounding rock control mechanisms and support technologies in underground engineering, and proposes a high-strength support system to address the complex conditions in underground engineering, such as high stress, extremely soft rocks, fault fracture zone and strong mining activity. It also comprehensively discusses the concept and bearing mechanisms of the supporting system, design calculation methods, field application and key construction technologies. The book describes the design and construction of a large-scale mechanical test system, independently developed by the author for high- strength confined concrete arches, which can also be used to define the mechanism of deformation and failure of confined concrete arches. Further, the book explores the application of the confined concrete support system in underground engineering with complex conditions, and its control effect on soft surrounding rock. The first international book presenting the theory and key technologies of high-strength, confined concrete support, it is a valuable reference resource for design, construction and supervision staff in the field of geotechnical engineering, as well as for teachers, students and researchers.

Book Synopsis Rock bolting: Theory and application in mining and underground construction by : Ove Stephansson
Download or read book Rock bolting: Theory and application in mining and underground construction written by Ove Stephansson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-23 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This includes the Proceedings of the international symposium, Abisko, Sweden, 28 August-2 September 1983. Rock bolts today represent the dominant support system in mines and underground structures. Some results and experiences are discussed to give a better understanding of the strength of individual rock bolts and systems of bolts, and the interaction between bolts and rock masses of various types. Topics covered are as follows: rock bolting in theory and experiments; design principles and experience; and ground control and instrumentation: cable bolting.

Book Synopsis A Model Study of Dynamically Loaded Square Footings on Dry Sand by : Jack K. Poplin
Download or read book A Model Study of Dynamically Loaded Square Footings on Dry Sand written by Jack K. Poplin and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation reported herein was undertaken to develop an approach to modeling displacements of surface and shallow-buried footings on dry sand subject to high-intensity, single-pulse loads. A hypothetical shallow-bured structure with an isolated footing loaded by airblast overpressure produced by detonation of a nuclear weapon was assumed for design of load pulses on nine model footings used: footing widths of 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5 in. and depth-of-burial to footing width ratios of 0, 0.5, and 1.0. The principles of similitude were used to scale length, force, and time in the models. The models were placed in mobile test bins of uniform, fine, dry sand (90 percent relative density) and subjected to dynamic and static loading. Nondimensional load-displacement relations dependent only on depth-of-burial ratio were developed relating maximum displacement to peak dynamic load, footing width, and soil shear strength gradient. When the dynamic response of the footings in the form of reaction-displacement curves was compared with static response, an increase in initial stiffness and ultimate strength was observed for dynamic loading. However, these dynamic increases were greatest when the static shear strength was lowest, i.e. footings on the surface, and were least for footings buried at a depth equal to its width where the static overburden produced a substantial increase in shear strength.
