Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Frederick William Faber, D.D: Priest of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri HE Life of Father Faber will be attractive to more than one class of readers. Those acquainted with himself or his writings will naturally be glad to follow his history, and to trace the growth of those powers with which they have been familiar. But his life will probably have an interest far beyond the circle of those who have thus known him. The change of religious thought in Eng land, arising from the Oxford movement of 1833, is the object of increasing attention in every part of the country; and all who wish to study its early progress will find much information in the life of one who was intimately connected with it. Father Faber's life was divided into two parts, widely distinct in character, by his conversion to the Catholic Faith. For thirty-one years he belonged to the Church of England, and although in the course of that time his Opinions underwent considerable change, he did not withdraw from active work in her service until the moment when his connection with her was severed. Moreover, Oxford was his home for many years, and the Object of his most affectionate reverence; and most of his friends were members of the Tractarian party, of which he became one of the most zealous adherents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the force that gave birth to Anglo-Catholicism, the Oxford Movement is generally treated as an Anglican phenomenon. Yet the influence of members who converted to Roman Catholicism proved decisive for the years leading up to the First Vatican Council and the definition of papal infallibility in Pastor Aeternus (1870). This collection of original essays edited by Parker and Pahls, explores how various Oxford Movement converts to Roman Catholicism contributed to debates surrounding papal infallibility in the 1850s, 1860s and beyond. From Henry Cardinal Manning and Msgr. George Talbot (a chamberlain to Pius 1X) to John Henry Cardinal Newman and Richard Simpson (a liberal Catholic journalist), the diverse voices of these converts marshaled arguments on both sides of the debate and played substantial roles in framing the outcome. The full story of Pastor Aeternus and its subsequent reception cannot be told without exploring the contribution of the combatants, dissidents, and collaborators who left the Church of England.

Book Synopsis Who Saved the Parthenon? by : William St Clair
Download or read book Who Saved the Parthenon? written by William St Clair and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this magisterial book, William St Clair unfolds the history of the Parthenon throughout the modern era to the present day, with special emphasis on the period before, during, and after the Greek War of Independence of 1821–32. Focusing particularly on the question of who saved the Parthenon from destruction during this conflict, with the help of documents that shed a new light on this enduring question, he explores the contributions made by the Philhellenes, Ancient Athenians, Ottomans and the Great Powers. Marshalling a vast amount of primary evidence, much of it previously unexamined and published here for the first time, St Clair rigorously explores the multiple ways in which the Parthenon has served both as a cultural icon onto which meanings are projected and as a symbol of particular national, religious and racial identities, as well as how it illuminates larger questions about the uses of built heritage. This book has a companion volume with the classical Parthenon as its main focus, which offers new ways of recovering the monument and its meanings in ancient times. St Clair builds on the success of his classic text, The Reading Nation in the Romantic Period, to present this rich and authoritative account of the Parthenon’s presentation and reception throughout history. With weighty implications for the present life of the Parthenon, it is itself a monumental contribution to accounts of the Greek Revolution, to classical studies, and to intellectual history.
