Book excerpt: Practical Chess Openings is a basic openings book covering all the major openings, in alphabetical order. At the beginning of each section is a general description of the opening and its history, including the names of famous players who played it. The opening lines are in Descriptive Notation and are arranged in columns from the most popular to the least popular. Nowadays chess grandmasters do not study opening books. Instead they work with computer databases with millions of games in them, and then run them through chess analysis programs like Fritz, Houdini and Rybka, searching for new ideas and for flaws in their rival grandmaster's analysis. Amateur chess players cannot compete against this. We must just play for the enjoyment of the game without any hope of ever making grandmaster status. Having a book with the latest most up to date lines is of no added value. A serviceable, shorter and highly readable book like Fine's "Practical Chess Openings" is just as good and perhaps even better than a new book crammed with all the latest stuff.

Book excerpt: Concentrating on Cissy, Lissy, Cissette, Alexander-Kins, Little Genius, and Elise, this book continues the theme of the late Patricia Smith's Encyclopedia of Madame Alexander Dolls, 1965-1990, which was a great seller for many years. This encyclopedia spans the years 1948 through 1965, which covers the vintage hard plastic dolls of the golden era of Madame Alexander dolls. Most of the highest valued dolls today were made during this period. The dolls from this era consistently win top honors in competition at the national conventions of the Madame Alexander Doll Club. Many of the dolls that began in this period (Cissy, Wendy, and Cissette) are the center of the Madame Alexander line today, after a time span of almost 50 years. You won't want to miss this exhaustive resource on the dolls made by the Madame Alexander Doll Company. 2006 values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's all here! Pictured and listed in this massive volume, now in its fourth edition, are fifty-four years' worth of toys produced between Matchbox's founding in 1947, and 2001, including their popular diecast vehicles, playsets, dolls, plastic kits, robots, and ephemera. The international scope of Matchbox toys is illustrated in catalogs and on boxes and labels printed in a dozen languages. Certain toys have been made for sale in specific countries or to promote specific companies or products. In 1982 the international numbering system on miniatures changed. The result of all these variables is a fascinating and infinite variety of Matchbox toys. In the largest volume about Matchbox Toys ever published, 2,447 color photos illustrate nearly all of Matchbox's vast line. Helpful captions and a price guide make this an essential part of every collector's library.
