Book excerpt: She was known only as Marie. Her story has perplexed art historians for the decades since American Impressionist painters flocked to the French village of Giverny, as they followed the path of its famous artist-in-residence Claude Monet. Marie was the favorite model of one of those painters, Theodore Robinson, whose untimely death at the age of 43 eclipsed his legacy as one of the greatest American painters of his day. This is the tale - part true, part imagined - of Theodore and Marie, set in Giverny, where author Rebecca Bricker captures the life and spirit of a thriving artists' colony at the turn of the last century. In The Secret of Marie, Monet's Giverny is the backdrop for a modern-day love story between a French architect and an American writer who meet at an ancient moulin in the village. Their romance conjures up the secret of an artist from Vermont and his Parisian model who left an indelible mark, tinged with mystery, on the history of American Impressionism.

Book excerpt: A revelatory look at an underexplored chapter of American art, which took place not on American soil but in France In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American artists flocked to France in search of instruction, critical acclaim, and patronage. Some, including James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and Mary Cassatt, became highly regarded in the French press, advancing their careers on both sides of the Atlantic. Others, notably William Merritt Chase, John Twachtman, Childe Hassam, and Thomas Wilmer Dewing--part of the association known as The Ten--found success working in the style of the French Impressionists, while Henry Ossawa Tanner, Cecilia Beaux, and Elizabeth Jane Gardner focused on genre and history subjects. This richly illustrated volume offers a sophisticated examination of cultural and aesthetic exchange as it highlights many figures, including artists of color and women, who were left out of previous histories. Celebrated scholars from both American and French institutions detail the complex history and diverse styles of these expatriate artists--styles ranging from conservative academic modes to Tonalism--and provide original perspectives on this fertile period of creativity, expanding our understanding of what constitutes American art.

Book excerpt: What Argenteuil in the 1870s was to French Impressionists, Cos Cob between 1890 and 1920 was to American Impressionists Childe Hassam, Theodore Robinson, John Twachtman, J. Alden Weir, and their followers. These artists and writers came together to work in the modest Cos Cob section of Greenwich, Connecticut, testing new styles and new themes in the stimulating company of colleagues. This beautiful book is the first to examine the art colony at Cos Cob and the role it played in the development of American Impressionist art. During the art-colony period, says Susan Larkin, Greenwich was changing from a farming and fishing community to a prosperous suburb of New York. The artists who gathered in Cos Cob produced work that reflects the resulting tensions between tradition and modernity, nature and technology, and country and city. The artists' preferred subjects -- colonial architecture, quiet landscapes, contemplative women -- held a complex significance for them, which Larkin explores. Drawing on maritime history, garden design, women's studies, and more, she places the art colony in its cultural and historical context and reveals unexpected depth in paintings of enormous popular appeal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mutual history of art, agriculture, and American identity as told through the theme of the harvest. The harvest has traditionally been a productive season, both on American farms and in its artists’ studios. Before the early nineteenth century, the ideal of the Jeffersonian yeoman, singly cultivating a subsistence plot for family use, dominated the American imagination; after World War II, the advent of big agribusiness proved less immediately attractive for artists. In We Gather Together, Charles C. Eldredge examines the period in between—when many Americans were farmers and much of America was farmland. Organized in a series of case studies each devoted to a single crop, We Gather Together initially focuses on familiar commodity crops such as corn, wheat, and potatoes, and then expands to other yields by Native American harvesters and California floriculturists, as well as winter ice cutters and coastal seaweed gatherers. This novel history of agriculture and art traces parallel developments on land and canvas, highlighting breakthroughs in each field. Artists such as Winslow Homer, Doris Lee, and Georgia O’Keeffe are joined by innovators in agriculture, whether mechanical inventors such as Eli Whitney, John Deere, and Cyrus McCormick or genetic hybridizers such as Luther Burbank, W. Atlee Burpee, and Theodosia Shepherd. Surveying an astonishing amount of material and a wide range of paintings, prints, and other artworks from the nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, We Gather Together gorgeously demonstrates how the use of agricultural metaphors permeated American visual culture. The harvest, we see here, came to signify and dominate politics, poetry, and popular culture, ultimately representing a primary facet of American identity and nationhood.
