Book Synopsis The Land Boomers by : Michael Cannon
Download or read book The Land Boomers written by Michael Cannon and published by Melbourne University Publish. This book was released on 1995 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boom or bust? What was the truth of the great land booms that swept Australia in the 1880s and 1890s? How was it that some speculators amassed prodigious fortunes, while others went so spectacularly broke? Seventy years after the events, historian Michael Cannon began sifting through thousands of records and documents, long since filed and forgotten. He pieced together an incredible trail of corruption and roguery, rarely if ever equalled in any parliamentary democracy. When the bare bones of this expos were first published in 1966, it caused an immediate sensation as the forebears of many well-known families were involved. Never before had any Australian historian been able to document such unbridled greed and over-riding ambition. Extended and revised, The Land Boomers is generously illustrated with cartoons, photographs and etchings of the time, and includes an introduction by the author on how he came to research and write the book.

Book Synopsis Virtue Capitalists by : Hannah Forsyth
Download or read book Virtue Capitalists written by Hannah Forsyth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtue Capitalists explores the rise of the professional middle class across the Anglophone world from c. 1870 to 2008. With a focus on British settler colonies – Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States – Hannah Forsyth argues that the British middle class structured old forms of virtue into rapidly expanding white-collar professional work, needed to drive both economic and civilizational expansion across their settler colonies. They invested that virtue to produce social and economic profit. This virtue became embedded in the networked Anglophone economy so that, by the mid twentieth century, the professional class ruled the world in alliance with managers whose resources enabled the implementation of virtuous strategies. Since morality and capital had become materially entangled, the 1970s economic crisis also presented a moral crisis for all professions, beginning a process whereby the interests of expert and managerial workers separated and began to actively compete.

Download or read book Phil May written by Simon Houfe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Phil May (1864-1903) was one of the two outstanding British black and white artists of the 1890s - the other was Aubrey Beardsley. The work of both artists displays a masterly use of line to create character, but rather than focusing on subjects drawn from polite English society, May's world is that of ordinary people at the public house, the club, the race-course, the theatre and the East End. May spent some years in Australia before returning to achieve general acclaim as a foremost illustrator. He contributed humorous pen-and-ink drawings to popularist publications such as "The Daily Graphic" and "Punch", and became highly regarded by fellow artists James McNeill Whistler and Joseph Pennell. In this book, Simon Houfe offers insights into the interface between the artist's life and work, bringing into view an innovative figure working at the height of one of the most dazzling periods for black and white art.

Download or read book In Their Merit written by Rodney Gouttman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia entered the Great War of 191418 on the coattails of her imperial mother, Great Britain. Some 420,000 of her citizens fought in the islands off New Guinea, Gallipoli, the Western Front, and the Middle East. Among them was a relatively large chunk of the countrys small Jewish population. The precise number remains unknown since many enlisted as Christians. The Jewish story of World War I is far more complex than the current communal narrative, monopolised, as it is, by the superb military leadership of General Sir John Monash, and the avowals of passionate loyalty of Australian Jewry to king, country, and empire. It is claimed that this was manifest in its relatively large enlistment and war effort on the home front. At all times, an edgy Anglo-Australian Jewish leadership was looking over its shoulder worried by possible accusations of disloyalty. The sketchy account of the Australian-Jewish involvement in World War I is due to a lack of evidence from that era and little enthusiasm for collecting whatever was available subsequently. Much of what does exist lacks a grassroots Jewish voice, except for a few diaries and letters. Nonetheless, it is most likely that the capacity of Jewish communal leaders to influence the average Australian Jews attitude to enlistment or home front activities was minimal. One matter is certain, and that is that a strong belief in social integration helped prevent the formation of any communal organisation to care for ill and wounded Jewish veterans.
Book Synopsis Identity, Community and Australian Artists, 1890-1914 by : Kate R. Robertson
Download or read book Identity, Community and Australian Artists, 1890-1914 written by Kate R. Robertson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An irresistible call lured Australian artists abroad between 1890 and 1914, a transitional period immediately pre- and post-federation. Travelling enabled an extension of artistic frontiers, and Paris – the centre of art – and London – the heart of the Empire – promised wondrous opportunities. These expatriate artists formed communities based on their common bond to Australia, enacting their Australian-ness in private and public settings. Yet, they also interacted with the broader creative community, fashioning a network of social and professional relationships. They joined ateliers in Paris such as the Académie Julian, clubs like the Chelsea Arts Club in London and visited artist colonies including St Ives in England and Étaples in France. Australian artists persistently sought a sense of belonging, negotiating their identity through activities such as plays, balls, tableaux, parties, dressing-up and, of course, the creation of art. While individual biographies are integral to this study, it is through exploring the connections between them that it offers new insights. Through utilising extensive archival material, much of which has limited or no publication history, this book fills a gap in existing scholarship. It offers a vital exploration re-consideration of the fluidity of identity, place and belonging in the lives and work of Australian artists in this juncture in British-Australian history.
