When we first meet Sable Gaines she is attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, where she admits to being there solely for the benefit of her mother-an overbearing elitist-and her best friend, Mikeen. She vehemently denies having a problem - at least not a drinking problem. While at the meeting, Sable confesses to having frequent encounters with her father, who just happens to have been dead for nearly a month. Sable offers this information up freely-simply trying to make sense of the world through what is tangible and what is not. But she quickly begins to wonder what the others at the meeting must think of her while deciding what she thinks of herself. Through "Separation" we come to meet a preacher who tells Sable that she is one of the rare individuals able to see into the spirit world-in fact, according to her Uncle, Tico Gaines, it is a family trait that her grandmother possessed as well. However, even more amazingly, Sable finds she can communicate with inanimate objects. As a result of her father's death, Sable and her Uncle Tico find themselves investigating the murder along with the local police department. Will Sable's unique powers serve to aid in the investigation, or will they reveal too much and leave Sable a wreck, simply looking for her next drink?

Book excerpt: Two of the most famous mosaics from the ancient world, in the church of San Vitale in Ravenna, depict the sixth-century emperor Justinian and, on the wall facing him, his wife, Theodora (497-548). This majestic portrait gives no inkling of Theodora's very humble beginnings or her improbable rise to fame and power. Raised in a family of circus performers near Constantinople's Hippodrome, she abandoned a successful acting career in her late teens to follow a lover whom she was legally forbidden to marry. When he left her, she was a single mother who built a new life for herself as a secret agent, in which role she met the heir to the throne. To the shock of the ruling elite, the two were married, and when Justinian assumed power in 527, they ruled the Eastern Roman Empire together. Their reign was the most celebrated in Byzantine history, bringing wealth, prestige, and even Rome itself back to the Empire. Theodora was one of the dominant political figures of her era, helping shape imperial foreign and domestic policy and twice saving her husband from threatened deposition. She played a central role trying to solve the religious disputes of her era and proactively assisted women who were being trafficked. An extraordinarily able politician, she excited admiration and hatred from those around her. Enemies wrote extensively and imaginatively about her presumed early career as a prostitute, while supporters elevated her, quite literally, to sainthood. Theodora's is a tale of a woman of exceptional talent who overcame immense obstacles to achieve incredible power, which she exercised without ever forgetting where she had come from. In Theodora: Actress, Empress, Saint, David Potter penetrates the highly biased accounts of her found in the writings of her contemporaries and takes advantage of the latest research on early Byzantium to craft a modern, well-rounded, and engaging narrative of Theodora's life. This fascinating portrait will intrigue all readers with an interest in ancient and women's history.

Book excerpt: Revoking unruly demons back to Hell is a rough job, but for Theodora, Annabeth, and Harriet, the three half-human women who do it on behalf of the Daemonium, it pays the bills. Plus, demons are jerks, so they’re kind of doing everyone a favor. But when an angel appears with the shocking news that someone has started opening the seven seals of the Apocalypse, setting in motion the end of the world, they find themselves facing a seemingly impossible problem: how do you find and stop someone who scares even angels…and you work for demons? It’s a dangerous mission with terrible odds. Already, Pestilence—the first Horseman of the Apocalypse—has been released, and the longer it takes them to find the culprit, the more Horsemen will be freed. As the women crisscross the city, desperately trying to piece together the clues that could help them save humanity, they discover that a secret kept from them since birth holds the key to stopping the Apocalypse…or completing it.

I used to be a sensible, responsible good girl who kept her nose buried in textbooks and worked hard to make her father’s dreams come true. Then Keane happened. He was a crude, rude, ruthless Southie bully who only cared about his hockey career and pucking his way through a string of girls. I hated him and I thought he hated me, but then one unexpected spring break kiss changed everything. I had no business spending one night with him, much less that wild, intense summer. He was freedom and ruin in one ridiculously sexy package. Moving across the country to go to med school and eventually marrying Keane’s total opposite seemed like the right things to do at the time. But now I’m divorced and back in Boston with a nine-year-old secret, I’ll do anything to protect. And as for Keane? Well, my ruthless ex is broken, bitter, and determined to punish me for walking away. READER WARNING: If you’re looking for a typical enemies-to-lover, secret baby romance, this intense, highly psychological second chance love story isn’t that. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bonus content 2024! Read an excerpt from Theodora Goss's new book, The Collected Enchantments! 2020 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award Winner for Adult Literature! 2020 Locus Award finalist for Best Collection Contains "A Country Called Winter," 2020 Locus Award finalist for Best Novelette “I was expecting this to be good, but it’s wonderful. Seeing these pieces together makes me realize what a vivid, authentic and important voice Goss is. These are real fairytales, magical, unsettling, touching, and brilliant. I loved every word.” —Jo Walton, World Fantasy, Nebula, and Hugo award–winning author of Among Others “Fairy tales are clothing, and to retell them is fashion. The fashion of these particular stories and poems is an abundance of lace, roses and porcelain contrasting with fur, snow and blood.” —Amal El-Mohtar, The New York Times “As a Hungarian-American raised on Hans Christen Andersen and the Brothers Grimm, Goss takes obvious delight in reweaving classic European folk tales to reveal new, often deeply feminist, perspectives . . . This toothsome collection is best read in one go.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review A young woman hunts for her wayward shadow at the school where she first learned magic—while another faces a test she never studied for as ice envelopes the world. The tasks assigned a bookish boy lead him to fateful encounters with lizards, owls, trolls and a feisty, sarcastic cat. A bear wedding is cause for celebration, the spinning wheel and the tower in the briar hedge get to tell their own stories, and a kitchenmaid finds out that a lost princess is more than she seems. The sea witch reveals what she hoped to gain when she took the mermaid’s voice. A wiser Snow White sets out to craft herself a new tale. In these eight stories and twenty-three poems, World Fantasy Award winner Theodora Goss retells and recasts fairy tales by Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Oscar Wilde. Sometimes harrowing, sometimes hilarious, always lyrical, the works gathered in Snow White Learns Witchcraft re-center and empower the women at the heart of these timeless narratives. Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Grand Master Jane Yolen, in her introduction, proclaims that Goss “transposes, transforms, and transcends times, eras, and old tales with ease. But also there is a core of tough magic that runs through all her pieces like a river through Faerie . . . I am ready to reread some of my new favorites.” More praise for Snow White Learns Witchcraft “Theodora Goss re-fleshes and re-clothes old tales in multifarious ways. Sometimes the stories’ new garments are classic and mythic, sometimes they’re up-to-the-minute, twenty-first-century creations, fresh cuts and colors that bring new truths from the underlying structures. Through prose and poetry, Goss shines her unique light into the fairytale forest—and many bright eyes gleam back.” —Margo Lanagan, New York Times–bestselling and World Fantasy Award–winning author of Tender Morsels “Theodora Goss’s Snow White Learns Witchcraft is a gorgeous, lyric collection of fairy tale retellings. Goss has the ability—the witchcraft—to be able to see the heart of the tale, and show it, polished and reflected and new, to the reader. I loved these stories and poems, their wildness, their beauty, their truth.” —Kat Howard, Alex Award–winning author of An Unkindness of Magicians “With each story, Theodora Goss weaves new myths from the threads of childhood and legend. This collection does what the best songs and poems and spells do: slips gently into your consciousness, then slowly changes the way you see the world. A wonderful addition to Goss’s works.” —Fran Wilde, World Fantasy, Nebula, and Hugo finalist and author of the award-winning Bone Universe trilogy “The elegance of Goss’s work has never ceased to amaze me. It feels effortless, but endlessly evocative and suggestive, flowing with the rhythms of both the natural world and the intimate socio-familial cosmos. Goss’s language fits together like gems in a complex crown, a diadem of images and motifs, resting gently on the head, but with a deceptive weight.” —Catherynne M. Valente, New York Times-bestselling author of Space Opera “In Snow White Learns Witchcraft, Theodora Goss weaves words that look disturbingly like snow and feathers into new stories that are familiar but uniquely remade. A Goss heroine breathes life into silent castles, imprints her own image in darkling mirrors, and plucks enchanted apples from the hands of peddlers; she is a bear’s bride, a newly minted queen, a thunderstorm of a woman and so much more. Dr. Goss cements her position as one of our foremost re-interpreters of fairy tales.” —Angela Slatter, World Fantasy Award-winning author of The Bitterwood Bible “What will you find in these pages, dear reader? Why, the encyclopedia of everything (as written by an owl), what the mirror really knows, rubies red with wolf’s blood-and, surprise!—the secret of who actually spun that straw into gold. Ice, iron, apples, birds, bones, subversion: Theodora Goss’s new collection of stories and poems Snow White Learns Witchcraft is woven of the finest spider silk, a funnel-web of faerie tales that will catch you fast and not let you go.” —C. S. E. Cooney, World Fantasy Award-winning author of Bone Swans Cover art by Ruth Sanderson

It is full of flowers and fairies and a piercing, thorny longing.” —from the introduction by Catherynne M. Valente A Mythopoeic Award finalist Songs for Ophelia gathers together eighty of Theodora Goss's otherworldly poems which lead the reader, as though under a spell, through the unfolding of the seasons and into the realm of pure magic. "Willows, dancing maidens, gypsies, mothers, lovers, daughters, magic animals, living waters, and transformations of all kinds abound in these gorgeous poems. With her formal prosody, her fairytale subjects, and her insights on love and loss and longing, Goss manages, Janus-like, to look back to the Victorians and inward at the heart of a modern woman with intelligence and grace." —Delia Sherman Cover art by Virginia Lee

But then came that one month when I pretended to be somebody else entirely while working at a roadhouse biker bar…. Big Mistake. Huge. Who knew one month pretending to be an interesting bad girl could ruin a boring good girl’s life? GRIFFIN: When I saw her, I knew she’d be mine. My old biker crew told me she was untouchable—that I’d never be able to land her without my fame and last name. So I did what any rock star with a big….ahem, ego would under the circumstances—wagered five figures on me seducing the untouchable girl behind the bar. RED: When the insanely hot biker, who wouldn’t have looked at Boring Bernice twice, asks me to come back to his place, I decide, “why not?” It was just supposed to be a silly fling…. GRIFFIN: It was just supposed to be a stupid bet. But what started out as fake got plenty real—especially after I lost her. Five years. I spend five years searching for her. And when I find her…. RED: Five years. I managed to hide from him for five years. He’s powerful and dangerous, and I’m not sure what he’ll do if he discovers the secret I’ve been keeping from him for four years and nine months. So when he finds me…. What’s this story called again? Escaping the Ruthless Biker? GRIFFIN: No, that’s not the title. The story is called Red….Red and the Big Bad Reaper. And you’re about to find out why.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damn Great Empires offers a new perspective on the works of William James by placing his encounter with American imperialism at the center of his philosophical vision. This book reconstructs James's overlooked political thought by treating his anti-imperialist Nachlass -- his speeches, essays, notes, and correspondence on the United States' annexation of the Philippines -- as the key to unlocking the political significance of his celebrated writings on psychology, religion, and philosophy. It shows how James located a craving for authority at the heart of empire as a way of life, a craving he diagnosed and unsettled through his insistence on a modern world without ultimate foundations. Livingston explores the persistence of political questions in James's major works, from his writings on the self in The Principles of Psychology to the method of Pragmatism, the study of faith and conversion in The Varieties of Religious Experience, and the metaphysical inquiries in A Pluralistic Universe. Against the conventional view of James as a thinker who remained silent on questions of politics, this book places him in dialogue with a transatlantic critique of modernity, as well as with champions and critics of American imperialism, from Theodore Roosevelt to W. E. B. Du Bois, in order to excavate James's anarchistic political vision. Bringing the history of political thought into conversation with contemporary debates in political theory, Damn Great Empires offers a fresh and original reexamination of the political consequences of pragmatism as a public philosophy.
