Book Synopsis This Light of Ours by : Leslie G. Kelen
Download or read book This Light of Ours written by Leslie G. Kelen and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-08-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement is a paradigm-shifting publication that presents the Civil Rights Movement through the work of nine photographers who participated in the movement as activists with SNCC, SCLC, and CORE. Unlike images produced by photojournalists, who covered breaking news events, these photographers lived within the movement—primarily within the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) framework—and documented its activities by focusing on the student activists and local people who together made it happen. The core of the book is a selection of 150 black-and-white photographs, representing the work of photographers Bob Adelman, George Ballis, Bob Fitch, Bob Fletcher, Matt Herron, David Prince, Herbert Randall, Maria Varela, and Tamio Wakayama. Images are grouped around four movement themes and convey SNCC's organizing strategies, resolve in the face of violence, impact on local and national politics, and influence on the nation's consciousness. The photographs and texts of This Light of Ours remind us that the movement was a battleground, that the battle was successfully fought by thousands of “ordinary” Americans among whom were the nation's courageous youth, and that the movement's moral vision and impact continue to shape our lives.

Book Synopsis Godless Morality by : Richard Holloway
Download or read book Godless Morality written by Richard Holloway and published by Canongate Books. This book was released on 2000-05-04 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of God in any moral debate is so problematic as to be almost worthless. We can argue whether this or that alleged claim emanated from God, but surely it is better to leave God out of the argument altogether and find strong human reasons for supporting the systems that we advocate. Godless Morality is a refreshing, courageous and human-centred justification for contemporary morality.
Book Synopsis The Emotional Construction of Morals by : Jesse Prinz
Download or read book The Emotional Construction of Morals written by Jesse Prinz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-22 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesse Prinz presents a bravura argument for highly controversial claims about morality, which go to the heart of our understanding of ourselves. He argues that moral values are based on emotional responses, and that these are inculcated by culture, not hard-wired through natural selection. These two claims support a form of moral relativism.
Download or read book Is It Ours? written by Martha Buskirk and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have tattoos, who owns the rights to the imagery inked on your body? What about the photos you just shared on Instagram? And what if you are an artist, responding to the surrounding landscape of preexisting cultural forms? Most people go about their days without thinking much about intellectual property, but it shapes all aspects of contemporary life. It is a constantly moving target, articulated through a web of laws that are different from country to country, sometimes contradictory, often contested. Some protections are necessary—not only to benefit creators and inventors but also to support activities that contribute to the culture at large—yet overly broad ownership rights stifle innovation. Is It Ours? takes a fresh look at issues of artistic expression and creative protection as they relate to contemporary law. Exploring intellectual property, particularly copyrights, Martha Buskirk draws connections between current challenges and early debates about how something intangible could be defined as property. She examines bonds between artist and artwork, including the ways that artists or their heirs retain control over time. The text engages with fundamental questions about the interplay between authorship and ownership and the degree to which all expressions and inventions develop in response to innovations by others. Most importantly, this book argues for the necessity of sustaining a vital cultural commons.
Book Synopsis Gandhi in His Time and Ours by : David Hardiman
Download or read book Gandhi in His Time and Ours written by David Hardiman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gandhi was the creator of a radical style of politics that has proved effective in fighting insidious social divisions within India and elsewhere in the world. How did this new form of politics come about? David Hardiman shows that it was based on a larger vision of an alternative society, one that emphasized mutual respect, resistance to exploitation, nonviolence, and ecological harmony. Politics was just one of the many directions in which Gandhi sought to activate this peculiarly personal vision, and its practice involved experiments in relation to his opponents. From representatives of the British Raj to Indian advocates of violent resistance, from right-wing religious leaders to upholders of caste privilege, Gandhi confronted entrenched groups and their even more entrenched ideologies with a deceptively simple ethic of resistance. Hardiman examines Gandhi's ways of conducting his conflicts with all these groups, as well as with his critics on the left and representatives of the Dalits. He also explores another key issue in Gandhi's life and legacy: his ideas about and attitudes toward women. Despite inconsistencies and limitations, and failures in his personal life, Gandhi has become a beacon for posterity. The uncompromising honesty of his politics and moral activism has inspired such figures as Jayaprakash Narayan, Medha Patkar, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Petra Kelly and influenced a series of new social movements--by environmentalists, antiwar campaigners, feminists, and human rights activists, among others--dedicated to the principle of a more just world.

Book Synopsis Absurdities of the Gods of the New Morality (PB) by : Stephen F. Baca
Download or read book Absurdities of the Gods of the New Morality (PB) written by Stephen F. Baca and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absurdities of the Gods of the New Morality By: Stephen F. Baca The art on the front cover represents the twelve supreme Greek deities; displayed from left to right they are Demeter, Hermes, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Ares, Hera, Zeus, Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, and Dionysius. This book strikes a parallel between the character and behavior of these supreme mythical gods and that of today’s elite nihilists. Just like the current gods of the new morality, the Greek gods were not noble; they were absurd, decadent, and powerful. Absurdities of the Gods of the New Morality is unique in that it identifies, specifically, those who were primarily responsible for the declension of virtue in our society. It is a complete, comprehensive, and exhaustive exposure of the negative enculturation of America by elitist Boomer activists. There was a decline of morality and virtue in our country, precipitated by Boomer activists starting in the 1960s, when Boomers first started reaching age 18 and went off to college, where they were proselytized by socialistic professors. Sound ethics, morality, and virtue are essential elements of any orderly society, and we are headed in the wrong direction. The solution is a return to virtue and decency.
