Book Synopsis Moral Authority, Men of Science, and the Victorian Novel by : Anne DeWitt
Download or read book Moral Authority, Men of Science, and the Victorian Novel written by Anne DeWitt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century men of science aligned scientific practice with moral excellence as part of an endeavor to secure cultural authority for their discipline. Anne DeWitt examines how novelists from Elizabeth Gaskell to H. G. Wells responded to this alignment. Revising the widespread assumption that Victorian science and literature were part of one culture, she argues that the professionalization of science prompted novelists to deny that science offered widely accessible moral benefits. Instead, they represented the narrow aspirations of the professional as morally detrimental while they asserted that moral concerns were the novel's own domain of professional expertise. This book draws on works of natural theology, popular lectures, and debates from the pages of periodicals to delineate changes in the status of science and to show how both familiar and neglected works of Victorian fiction sought to redefine the relationship between science and the novel.

Book Synopsis Mercy and British Culture, 1760-1960 by : James Gregory
Download or read book Mercy and British Culture, 1760-1960 written by James Gregory and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-04 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning over 2 centuries, James Gregory's Mercy and British Culture, 1760 -1960 provides a wide-reaching yet detailed overview of the concept of mercy in British cultural history. While there are many histories of justice and punishment, mercy has been a neglected element despite recognition as an important feature of the 18th-century criminal code. Mercy and British Culture, 1760-1960 looks first at mercy's religious and philosophical aspects, its cultural representations and its embodiment. It then looks at large-scale mobilisation of mercy discourses in Ireland, during the French Revolution, in the British empire, and in warfare from the American war of independence to the First World War. This study concludes by examining mercy's place in a twentieth century shaped by total war, atomic bomb, and decolonisation.
Book Synopsis Experiments on Animals by : Stephen Paget
Download or read book Experiments on Animals written by Stephen Paget and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1907 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book was published in 1900. For twelve years it had been my business, as Secretary to the Association for the Advancement of Medicine by Research, to know something about experiments on animals, and to follow the working of the Act of 1876; and to give facts and references to a very large number of applicants. Believing that an account of these experiments, and of the conditions imposed on them by the Act, might serve a useful purpose, I proposed to the Council of the Association that I should write a book on the subject. The Council accepted this proposal; and decided that the book should be written for general reading, that it should not be anonymous, and that it should be published without reserve. It was, of course, a doubtful and embarrassing task. But, from twelve years' experience of the things said by the chief opponents of all experiments on animals, I knew that there was only one way of doing it to give the original authorities, the plain facts, the very words, chapter and verse for everything.
