Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with one of the few thorough-going Labovian studies carried out in Britain. Based on a survey of over hundred randomly selected informants from the towns of Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield, it deals first with the methodology employed, and then sketches some aspects of the ‘traditional’ dialects of the area before describing a large number of variables. Other non-standard features encountered during the survey are described, since these too are part of the changing patterns of speech in West Yorkshire. The final chapter draws a distinction between ‘dialect’ and ‘accent’ which is slightly different from that generally employed, and suggests that while ‘dialect’ features seem to have declined under the pressure of the standard language, ‘accent’ still persists as a social differentiator.

The words we use (and the sounds we make when we use them) are more often than not a product of where we live, and An Atlas of English Dialects shows the reader where certain words, sounds and phrases originate from and why usage varies from region to region. The Atlas includes: ninety maps showing the regions in which particular words, phrases and pronunciations are used detailed commentaries explaining points of linguistic, historical and cultural interest explanations of linguistic terms, a bibliography for further reading and a full index. Book excerpt: A dialect is a regional or social variant of a language, typically influenced by regional or social background. Dialects can be distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and accents. Yorkshire is the largest county in England, and has a vast range of dialects to match. The Sheffield dialect is one of the greatest historical assortments of English. The Sheffield dialect has numerous shortenings to its words and phrases. Towns that surround Sheffield such as Barnsley, Chesterfield and Doncaster nicknamed the residents of Sheffield 'dee-dars'. This is because Sheffielders' are famously known to use the sound of 'D', instead of the traditional pronunciation of 'th'. Dialect words such as 'thee' and 'thou' end up sounding like 'dee' and 'daa', hence the derived nickname 'dee-dars'.

Book excerpt: I’m going to define the essence of this sprawling place as best I can. I’m going to start here, in this village, and radiate out like a ripple in a pond. I don’t want to go to the obvious places, either; I want to be like a bus driver on my first morning on the job, getting gloriously lost, turning up where I shouldn’t. I’m going to confirm or deny the clichés, holding them up to see where the light gets in. Yorkshire people are tight. Yorkshire people are arrogant. Yorkshire people eat a Yorkshire pudding before every meal. Yorkshire people solder a t’ before every word they use... If there were such a thing as a professional Yorkshireman, Ian McMillan would be it. He’s regularly consulted as a home-grown expert, and southerners comment archly on his ‘fruity Yorkshire brogue’. But he has been keeping a secret. His dad was from Lanarkshire, Scotland, making him, as he puts it, only ‘half tyke’. So Ian is worried; is he Yorkshire enough? To try to understand what this means Ian embarks on a journey around the county, starting in the village has lived in his entire life. With contributions from the Cudworth Probus Club, a kazoo playing train guard, Mad Geoff the barber and four Saddleworth council workers looking for a mattress, Ian tries to discover what lies at the heart of Britain’s most distinct county and its people, as well as finding out whether the Yorkshire Pudding is worthy of becoming a UNESCO Intangible Heritage Site, if Harrogate is really, really, in Yorkshire and, of course, who knocks up the knocker up?

Book excerpt: Born into a poor family and raised by an oppressive aunt, young Jane Eyre becomes the governess at Thornfield Manor to escape the confines of her life. There her fiery independence clashes with the brooding and mysterious nature of her employer, Mr. Rochester. But what begins as outright loathing slowly evolves into a passionate romance. When a terrible secret from Rochester's past threatens to tear the two apart, Jane must make an impossible choice: Should she follow her heart or walk away and lose her love forever? Wuthering Heights is a gothic romance classic by Emily Brontë which revolves around the doomed romance of Catherine and Heathcliff. Charlotte Brontë (1816 – 1855) was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Brontë sisters who survived into adulthood and whose novels have become classics of English literature. Emily Jane Brontë (1818 – 1848) was an English novelist and poet who is best known for her only novel, Wuthering Heights, now considered a classic of English literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Part II of a synchronic study of the traditional urban vernacular spoken in an area determined by Bolton's urban field of influence. It contains a detailed account of the morphology and syntax of the dialect, based upon extensive fieldwork. Together with Part I, it constitutes the fullest grammar of an English dialect published to date. The distinctiveness of the Bolton dialect suggests that grammatical variation among English dialects has generally been underestimated by scholars, no doubt chiefly as a result of their purposes and theoretical concerns, methodologies, and the specific field techniques that they have employed. This is a major conclusion of the study, and has some bearing on the theory of English dialectology, and English linguistics more generally. The need for extensive recordings of free conversation is made evident, if numerous syntactic features are to be apprehended, and fully explained. It also emerges that urban environments are not simply melting pots, in which all distinctive linguistic characteristics are levelled out.
