Book excerpt: I am very glad that people are enjoying The Yellow Legacies. This was a labor of love that I wrote in 2006. It is loosely based on experiences that I encountered in the house where I grew up. It is about love, life, and lessons but most of all family. It is about fears and tears and overcoming the past. It is ultimately about the wonderful family I have always truly appreciated, loved, and admired from those moments while growing up to even now.
Book Synopsis Yellow Journalism by : W. Joseph Campbell
Download or read book Yellow Journalism written by W. Joseph Campbell and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This offers a detailed and long-awaited reassessment of one of the most maligned periods in American journalism—the era of the yellow press. The study challenges and dismantles several prominent myths about the genre, finding that the yellow press did not foment—could not have fomented—the Spanish-American War in 1898, contrary to the arguments of many media historians. The study presents extensive evidence showing that the famous exchange of telegrams between the artist Frederic Remington and newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst—in which Hearst is said to have vowed to furnish the war with Spain—almost certainly never took place. The study also presents the results of a systematic content analysis of seven leading U. S. newspapers at 10 year intervals throughout the 20th century and finds that some distinguishing features of the yellow press live on in American journalism. The yellow press period in American journalism history has produced many powerful and enduring myths-almost none of them true. This study explores these legends, presenting extensive evidence that: • The yellow press did not foment-could not have fomented-the Spanish-American War in 1898, contrary of the arguments of many media historians • The famous exchange of telegrams between the artist Frederic Remington and newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst-in which Hearst is said to have vowed to furnish the war with Spain-almost certainly never took place • The readership of the yellow press was not confined to immigrants and people having an uncertain command of English, as many media historians maintain The study also presents the results of a detailed content analysis of seven leading U.S. newspapers at 10-year intervals, from 1899 to 1999. The content analysis—which included the Denver Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Raleigh News and Observer, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, San Francisco Examine and Washington Post—reveal that some elements characteristic of yellow journalism have been generally adopted by leading U. S. newspapers. This critical assessment encourages a more precise understanding of the history of yellow journalism, appealing to scholars of American journalism, journalism history, and practicing journalists.

Book Synopsis The Mixed Legacy of Charlotte Perkins Gilman by : Catherine Golden
Download or read book The Mixed Legacy of Charlotte Perkins Gilman written by Catherine Golden and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection of fourteen new essays on Gilman's mixed legacy - her vision for a truly humane, egalitarian world alongside her persistent presentation of class, ethnic, and racial stereotypes - underscores the contemporary relevance of Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935). Gilman enjoyed a worldwide reputation as a writer, lecturer, and socialist, and her prodigious output (novels, stories, poetry, lectures, journalism, theoretical works) stands as a major contribution to modern feminist thought on important, contested economic and social issues. After her death in 1935, she was virtually forgotten. With the revival of the women's movement in the 1960s and 1970s, however, Gilman was "rediscovered," her arguments deemed prescient by late-twentieth-century feminists."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Plastic Legacies by : Trisia Farrelly
Download or read book Plastic Legacies written by Trisia Farrelly and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is virtually nowhere on earth that remains untouched by plastics and the situation presents a serious threat to our natural world. Despite the magnitude of the problem, the interventions most often put in place are consumer-led and market-based and only nominally capable of addressing the issue. As the problem worsens and neoliberal ideologies limit the world’s responses to this crisis, there is a growing need for legislative frameworks that attend to the complex social and ecological issues associated with plastics. The contributors to this volume bring expertise from across academic disciplines to illustrate how plastics are produced, consumed, and discarded and to find holistic and integrated approaches that demonstrate an understanding of the wide-ranging problem. From the plasticization of earth’s oceans to the endocrine disrupting chemicals that have the potential to seriously harm life as we know it, these essays beg the question that we all must answer: what is our plastic legacy? With contributions by: Imogen E. Napper, Sabine Pahl, Richard C. Thompson, Sasha Adkins, Stephanie B. Borrelle, Jennifer Provencher, Tina Ngata, Sven Bergmann, Christina Gerhardt, Elyse Stanes, Tridibesh Dey, Mike Michael, Laura McLauchlan, Johanne Tarpgaard, Deirdre McKay, Padmapani Perez, Lei Xiaoyu, and John Holland.

It is not in any sense either a history of the Jewish people or an exposition of Judaism, and it is concerned with these topics only in so far as discussion of them may be necessary for the clear setting forth of the proper theme of the volume.
