Book Synopsis Luigi Pirandello in the Theatre by : Susan Bassnett
Download or read book Luigi Pirandello in the Theatre written by Susan Bassnett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1993. Contemporary Theatre Studies is a book series of special interest to everyone involved in theatre. This collection of documents is the first attempt in English to bring together a body of material on Luigi Pirandello as multi-faceted man of the theatre. Because relatively few of his works have been easily available to English language readers, he is thought of most frequently as a playwright, the author of Six Characters in Search of an Author and Henry IV in particular, and his contribution to theatre, both in theory and in practice, has tended to be overlooked. Emphasising his role as a director, the book traces the rise and fall of his own theatre company, the Teatro d’Arte where he struggled to instil new practices and comments on Pirandello’s attempts during the years of Fascism to give Italy a national theatre in a European context.

Book Synopsis Playing with Gender by : Maggie Gunsberg
Download or read book Playing with Gender written by Maggie Gunsberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work takes gender as its point of entry into the comedies of Carlo Goldoni (1707-93). The dramatization of femininity and masculinity is explored in conjunction with that of other social categories (class, the family, and age). The plays reinforce the patriarchal association of femininity with the body, with spectacle, and with theatricality, while the dramatic backdrop of Venice and carnival provides a context for the staging of issues relating to identity, disguise and fashion. In the plays, pretence and theatricality vie with bourgeois Enlightenment values of morality, honesty and respectability to produce dramatic tension with distinct gender implications."

Download or read book Europe on Stage written by Gunilla Anderman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For any play originating in a different culture and society to be favourably received in English translation, timing and other factors of reception are often as important as the purely linguistic aspects. This book focuses on the problems of reception and translation into English encountered by European playwrights now regularly staged at British theatres, such as Ibsen, Strindberg, Chekhov, Brecht, Anouilh, Lorca and Pirandello, among others. Introduced by discussions highlighting different approaches to translation in general and the difficulties inherent in the translation of drama in particular, the book concludes by looking at what is lost in translation and the means by which adaptions and new versions may help to restore the balance.

Book Synopsis Characters and Authors in Luigi Pirandello by : Ann Caesar
Download or read book Characters and Authors in Luigi Pirandello written by Ann Caesar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luigi Pirandello is best known in the English-speaking world for his radical challenge to traditional Western theatre with plays such as Six Characters in Search of an Author. But theatre is just one manifestation of his experiments with language which led to a remarkable collection of novels, short stories, and essays as well as his work for a film industry then in its infancy. This study, which is based on the view that Pirandello's writings are most fruitfully discussed in a European context, takes as its starting-point the author's belief in the primacy of the literary character in acreative process which is necessarily conflictual. The book argues that all Pirandello's characters are engaged in a continual performance which transcends the genre distinction between narrative and dramatic forms. In this performance it is the spoken word in which the characters invest most heavily as they struggle to sustain an identity of theirown, tell their life-stories, and assert themselves before their most prominent antagonist, the author himself.
